Daegu seafood restaurant near Moda Outlet: octopus jjim with two kids

Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch is a Korean restaurant near Moda Outlet in Dalseo, Daegu, serving haemul-jjim (spicy braised seafood) and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and sundubu (soft tofu stew) in earthenware pots. For a family dinner with two kids, we ordered brisket soft tofu stew, a medium seafood jjim, pork cutlet and fried rice; the octopus was tender rather than chewy, and the seasoning was mild enough that even the children ate well. Sin Yeongung is a good seafood jjim spot for a family meal out with kids or a get-together over drinks.

Sushi spot in Dasa, Daegu: seared beef sushi lunch for two, Mummum

Mummum Dasa Branch (뭄뭄 다사점) is a Japanese sushi restaurant near Daesil Station in Dasa-eup, Dalseong, Daegu, serving sushi, rice bowls, udon and pasta. Over lunch with her husband, the writer ordered half salmon, half beef sushi (5 pieces each), a 10-piece assorted sushi set and spicy udon; the lightly seared beef sushi with a sweet sauce stood out, while the mitre squid in the assorted set was a little chewy. On a return visit to Mummum Dasa Branch, the beef sushi would be the first order.

Dongseong-ro pizza & pilaf restaurant, Daegu: weekday lunch at Dana

Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a pizza and pasta restaurant on the 2nd floor of 12-24 Dongseong-ro 2-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. On a weekday, the writer and her husband arrived right at opening time for lunch and ordered a pizza set (half bulgogi, half pepperoni pizza with vongole pasta) plus a spicy bacon shrimp pilaf, then took the three leftover pizza slices home for the kids. The surprise star at Dana Dongseong-ro Main Branch was the spicy bacon shrimp pilaf, packed with big whole shrimp.

Daegu Japanese spot by Keimyung: shabu kalguksu brunch, Myeonsikdang

Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch is a Japanese restaurant specializing in ramen, soba, pho and tonkatsu, on the 2nd floor of a building near Keimyung University's east gate in Dalseo, Daegu. A couple ordered the two-person set for a weekend brunch at Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch: spicy tonkotsu ramen, shabu kalguksu, tonkatsu, a mini flame-grilled buta-don and a lemonade, and the portions were so generous that two big eaters left a little behind. Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch suits anyone after a filling meal and a surprisingly good lemonade.

Gunwi camping restaurant with kids: fire pit, squid ramen, Palkkongi

Palkkongi (팔꽁이) is a camping restaurant at the foot of Palgongsan in Bugye-myeon, Gunwi, Daegu, where you can enjoy a day of tent camping without bringing any gear. With the kids in a Mukping 6 tent, the family grilled pork belly and sausage from the Palkkongi shop over charcoal and a griddle, cooked squid jjamppong ramen, and enjoyed the large weekend-only fire pit zone and fireworks. A dog roaming off-leash was a letdown, but Palkkongi is an easy way for a family to get a full camping day without the hassle of gear.

Pocha-style bar in Gyo-dong, Daegu: yukhoe gimbap at Yukyeonjeong

Yukyeonjeong Gyodong Branch (육연정 교동점) is a yukhoe (Korean raw beef) bar with an open-air pocha (street-stall) feel, tucked into an alley in Gyo-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu. On a second round with a friend, the writer sat at an outdoor table for hanwoo yukhoe with odregi, yukhoe gimbap and soju, and the complimentary tang-guk soup was good enough to refill once. Yukyeonjeong Gyodong Branch serves food strong enough to make it a first stop, not just a second.

Pohang crab restaurant for kids: 3 bowls of abalone porridge, Gallilli

Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang (갈릴리대게회식당) is a snow crab and raw fish restaurant near Jukdo Market in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. For a weekend family dinner, the writer's family ordered the Yeongdeok snow crab set for 3 and ate a full course of abalone porridge, sashimi, seafood, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), snow crab, gejang rice, red crab ramen and spicy fish stew, and even the second child, who rarely eats crab, kept reaching for the snow crab. Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang was a highly satisfying family meal out in Pohang with kids, and the family is planning a return visit.

Sunset patio clam grill in Gyodong, Daegu: fried squid add-on, Nampo

Nampo is a clam grill pub with patio seating on Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Around sunset, the writer sat at a patio table booked on Naver and had the clam grill for 2–3 people with Kirin draft beer. The writer added fried squid and simmered the free kalguksu noodles (knife-cut noodles) in extra broth. Nampo delivered a lively Gyodong patio as the lights came on, fresh scallops and dessert ice cream, making for a satisfying night.

Daegu pork galbi lunch with green onion kimchi refills: Galbijeong

Galbijeong (현풍 갈비정) is a charcoal-grill galbi restaurant in Technopolis, Yuga-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu, near the Daegu National Science Museum and Kids in the Room. On a weekend lunch with the kids, the family ordered 4 servings of galbi plus a kids' and a regular doenjang stew; Galbijeong's staff grilled the meat, and the playroom, yogurt and seasoned laver for the children made the meal easy. Galbijeong is a family-friendly spot whose green onion kimchi and garlic sauce are the most memorable part.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant, Sunday wait and kids' bulgogi bowl: Ppwang

Ppwang Mulhoe (퐝물회) is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant on Haean-ro near Yeongildae Beach in Pohang. On a Sunday lunch, the family waited 15–20 minutes for a KakaoTalk alert, then ate 2 half-and-half squid and flounder mulhoe, a bulgogi rice bowl and shrimp fried rice for the kids, plus a self-bar with boiled shrimp, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and unlimited noodle refills. The flavor and spread at Ppwang Mulhoe make the wait worthwhile, and it suits family meals with kids.

Daegu pasta restaurant for a daytime red wine date: Etrenne Jukjeon

Etrenne Jukjeon Branch is a Western restaurant in the Daewoo World Mark shopping arcade at Jukjeon intersection in Dalseo-gu, Daegu. The writer and her husband came by public transport for a lunch date and shared a house salad, gambas, Toowoomba pasta, half-and-half lasagna and 2 glasses of house red wine; the thick, creamy Toowoomba pasta and the half-and-half lasagna, a first for the writer, were the standouts. Leaving the car at home makes Etrenne Jukjeon Branch a great Daegu date spot where both of you can enjoy a glass of wine at lunch.

Daegu Korean restaurant: kids' weekend brunch, 30-min wait, Banwoldang

Banwoldang Bujasikdang (반월당부자식당) is a Korean restaurant on Gwandeokjeong-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, known for fire-grilled squid and pork stir-fry and stone galbi (grilled marinated ribs). The writer arrived at weekend opening time with the kids and no reservation, ordered fire-grilled squid and pork stir-fry for 2 and fire-grilled Buja stone galbi for 2, and waited over 30 minutes because reserved guests were served first; the stone galbi was decent, and the squid and pork stir-fry suited their taste. Verdict: book Banwoldang Bujasikdang ahead if you go on a weekend.
