Seogwipo Korean breakfast with abalone rice: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju, serving mackerel ssam-bap and abalone stone-pot rice. We visited with our child for a two-person aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap set, grilled mackerel, a self-serve banchan bar, and a garden walk. Verdict: a memorable, filling Jeju breakfast for families.

A filling breakfast during a Jeju trip

Whenever I travel to Jeju, figuring out what to have for breakfast is my biggest worry 😅 When you search for Jeju breakfast spots, there is so much talk about cafés or convenience-store lunch boxes, but since I travel with my child, I need a proper, filling meal.

Meal during a September Jeju trip

I happened to walk into this place during our September Jeju trip, and it was seriously amazing 🥹

What is the atmosphere like at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap?

Even though we visited at 10 AM, there were already lots of customers. Let me tell you about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥), near the Jungmun Tourist Complex and 10 minutes from Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff!

The moment I stepped in, I thought, “Oh, this place is different?” I opened the door and even the scale was on another level. Up to 480 seats—does that even make sense? 😮

Self-serve bar and a 3,500-pyeong garden

But it was not just big—it was decorated so cozily and neatly that I liked it even more.

Outside, there is a 3,500-pyeong garden, and when we visited in September it was at its greenest 🌸 It was perfect for a walk with my child after eating. If you are looking for places to visit in Jeju in September, this is both a restaurant and a healing space!

I was already swayed by the self-serve banchan (Korean side dishes) bar. Once we were seated, a staff member showed us to it. Hmm, I wondered how good self-serve side dishes could be, but wow! They were genuinely delicious 😳

Self-serve side dishes including seasoned vegetables, salted seafood, and kimchi

From assorted seasoned vegetables to salted seafood and kimchi, I nearly got full before the main food arrived haha. My child kept picking at the side dishes too—I even wondered if this was really just a side-dish shop 😄

We ordered the two-person set, and it was such a full spread. I do not know why the combination of aged kimchi and plump, meaty mackerel works so perfectly.

The spicy kick of the aged kimchi balances the rich mackerel beautifully, and when you mix it with rice, the savory flavor just explodes in your mouth 😋

And then there was the abalone stone-pot rice! It was my first time having dolsotbap (rice cooked in a hot stone pot) with abalone, and it was so, so good. When I opened the lid, steam rose up and the delicate abalone aroma spread out—it made me think, “Ah, this is Jeju” 🥹

The staff told us to pour broth over the scorched rice crust and eat it, and that was another special treat!

How we ate the plump grilled mackerel with our child

My child asked for grilled fish from the side, so we added this too. You could tell at a glance that they use only wonderfully plump mackerel.

We wrapped the thick mackerel flesh in gim (roasted seaweed), or put rice and mackerel on a leafy wrap. There were so many ways to eat it that my child had fun too 😄 The soft, nutty texture was definitely different from ordinary mackerel.

There is also a menu limited to 30 servings a day

It is called boneless flower mackerel aged-kimchi braise, and it is limited to 30 servings a day. I heard it is made with fresh mackerel fillets with all the tiny bones removed.

Our timing did not work out this time, so we could not have it, but next time I will definitely go early and try it.

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap featured on television

At first, I had simply stopped in while passing by, but I later learned that it had appeared on Live Tonight and Saturdays Are Good for Rice. Seeing that TV shows had discovered it first made me think it was not famous for nothing. They say you only know a great restaurant by going yourself, but I think this is one of those proven places you can visit with confidence 😊
