Gwangsan eel restaurant that packs leftover eel to go: Yuil Jangeo
In short
Yuil Jangeo is a self-grill charcoal eel restaurant newly opened on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On a weekday lunch with his parents, the writer picked out a 1kg Pungcheon freshwater eel for 29,480 won, got it pre-grilled and finished it over charcoal, and added 9,900-won eel soup plus eel tteokgalbi (grilled eel patties) from a review event. Leftover eel can be packed to go and the parking lot is large, making Yuil Jangeo an easy pick for a restorative meal with parents.

The verdict on Yuil Jangeo: why it works for a meal with parents
Looking for somewhere to recharge with my parents over a weekday lunch, I visited the newly opened Yuil Jangeo.
Eel can get pricey at some places, but here I could eat at a relatively affordable price, which made it easy to bring my parents along.
With a large parking lot, a clean interior, and even private rooms, it's worth considering as a family dining spot too.

Why we chose Yuil Jangeo for lunch
While looking for a restaurant in Gwangsan, my parents and I decided on eel as the dish to recharge with.
Searching for somewhere I could eat proper eel without too much of a price burden, I ended up at Yuil Jangeo on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan.
Inside Yuil Jangeo: private rooms, aged eel and the self-serve bar

The interior was spacious and clean, with tables spaced comfortably apart.

There were also private rooms, which looked great for group meals.

Inside, I could see the eels being aged.

At Yuil Jangeo, you pick your own eel first, then pay.
I liked that I could check the eel's condition and size myself before ordering.

You can also grab extra side dishes from the self-serve bar, so it was easy to take as much as I needed.

After the meal, there was also a coffee machine, nice for finishing up with a simple cup of coffee.

Menu and prices: 1kg Pungcheon freshwater eel for 29,480 won
What I ordered was the Pyeongcheon freshwater eel (풍천민물장어), 1kg, priced at 29,480 won.

We also ordered the eel soup for 9,900 won, and the adult table setting fee at 4,000 won per person for two people.

We paired it with a bottle of soju, and since the eel soup was good, we packed one to go.
The eel we picked comes pre-grilled once before being brought to the table, so you just need to finish it off briefly on the charcoal instead of grilling from raw for a long time.
How the pre-grilled charcoal eel and eel soup tasted

The side dishes were varied — pickled perilla leaves, radish wraps, napa cabbage kimchi, green onion kimchi, pickled onion, ssamjang (dipping sauce), raw garlic, ginger, cold cucumber soup, and lettuce wraps.

We put the pre-grilled eel back on the charcoal for a bit more grilling and tried it.
There was almost no fishy smell, and the eel had a clean, savory flavor.
Grilling it a little longer on the charcoal brought out that distinctive nutty eel flavor, and it was also good with a bit of sauce.

I personally prefer eating it plain, and wrapping it with ginger, garlic, or green onion kimchi made for a savory, satisfying bite.

We also ordered the eel soup, which, like the grilled eel, had chopped pieces of eel in it.

I liked that the eel wasn't ground up but left whole in the soup.
The seasoning wasn't too strong either, which paired well with the grilled eel.

Eel tteokgalbi: the dish kids will actually eat
As part of a review event, we also tried the eel tteokgalbi (grilled rice cake patty made with eel), which seemed like a good option for kids who struggle with eel bones.

The tteokgalbi had a nice chewy texture and a clean flavor, giving us a different way to enjoy eel.
Can you pack leftover eel to go at Yuil Jangeo?
It was also nice that leftover eel could be packed to take home.

Note: seasoned eel and self-bar food cannot be packed.
Personally, given the low price burden, the wide parking lot, and how good the eel was, I'm planning to come back here with my parents again.
