Cream gnocchi at Suwanjigu Form, Western restaurant in Suwan, Gwangju

In short

Suwanjigu Form is a Western restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, where staff introduce the day's seasonal ingredients before you order. The writer ordered hanwoo (Korean beef) tartare, cream gnocchi and zero-sugar cola: both dishes tasted good, but the tartare listed at 24,000 won on the menu was quoted at 26,000 won on the day, and cooking smells from the open kitchen filled the small room. Suwanjigu Form is worth a visit for something different, as long as you check prices before ordering.

What is Suwanjigu Form? Location, parking and hours in Suwan, Gwangju

Today I visited Form, a great date-course spot in the Suwan district!

There's on-site parking. It's located in a one-room housing neighborhood, so street parking in the alley is possible, but driving in there is pretty tough. Hours are 12:00–22:00, so keep that in mind when planning your visit.

Entrance of Suwanjigu Form and the surrounding alley

I was looking for somewhere with a nice atmosphere to eat in Suwan and ended up at Form! I was curious because they have dishes you don't usually come across, from beef tartare to gnocchi. This time I ordered beef tartare, cream gnocchi and zero-sugar cola.

Ordering after the seasonal ingredient briefing — and a price that didn't match

One notable thing about this place, even among Suwan restaurants, is that it uses seasonal ingredients. Before ordering, a staff member explained the day's seasonal ingredients and menu to us.

Dishes chosen at Suwanjigu Form after the seasonal ingredient briefing

The idea of choosing your dish after hearing an explanation was pretty interesting in itself. But there was a moment during ordering that threw me off a bit.

Menu at Suwanjigu Form

The menu had the beef tartare listed at ₩24,000, but when I called the staff over to order, they told me it was ₩26,000 today????

I get that prices can shift given they use seasonal ingredients, but as a customer, you naturally go by what's printed on the menu. It would have been much better if they'd updated the menu or mentioned the price change up front during the initial explanation.

Regardless of how big or small the price difference was, only finding out right before ordering was a bit disappointing. Still, I was curious about the dish, so I ordered the beef tartare anyway.

How do the hanwoo beef tartare and cream gnocchi taste?

First, the beef tartare had a nice combination of tender beef texture and the accompanying ingredients. The flavor of the beef came through well, and the overall seasoning and balance were on point. If you usually enjoy tartare dishes, this one would be satisfying. It also seemed like it would pair nicely with a light drink.

Rich cream sauce cream gnocchi at Suwanjigu Form

The cream gnocchi we ordered alongside it was delicious too. The chewy yet soft gnocchi paired with a rich, nutty cream sauce kept me reaching for more. Cream dishes can get heavy after just a few bites, but alternating with the beef tartare made for a good combo.

If you're searching for pasta restaurants in Suwan, Gwangju, and you're into Western dishes like pasta or gnocchi, this is a place worth checking out. Going purely by taste, both dishes I ordered were satisfying.

Service and the open kitchen: what fell short at Suwanjigu Form

That said, there were some things that fell a bit short during the meal. I wish the service felt a little more attentive when asking questions and getting explanations. At times staff seemed to be handling other tasks while talking with us, and some of their mannerisms while explaining the menu felt a bit too casual, which made things slightly awkward from a customer's perspective.

Interior of Suwanjigu Form with the open kitchen visible

The restaurant is small and runs on an open-kitchen layout. The kitchen is quite exposed, so you can watch the food being made up close. But since the space isn't very large for a fully open kitchen, the smells from multiple dishes being cooked came through pretty directly inside the dining room.

Throughout the meal, various cooking smells kept drifting through, making it hard to focus on what I was actually tasting, and it felt a bit stuffy. Better ventilation would help. The seating is also on the cozy side rather than spacious. If you like enjoying an up-close open-kitchen vibe, that could be a plus, but personally I prefer a bit more room and comfort, so it felt a little cramped.

Is Suwanjigu Form worth a visit? The verdict

Still, the food itself was satisfying overall. The beef tartare let you enjoy the flavor of the ingredients, and the cream gnocchi's rich sauce paired well with the gnocchi's texture. Having the zero-sugar cola alongside made for a nice, clean palate cleanser between bites of the two dishes.

Among Western restaurants in Suwan, this is a place worth considering if you want something a bit more unusual than the norm, like tartare or gnocchi. Being introduced to seasonal ingredients before choosing your dish was also a different experience from a typical restaurant. Overall, Form clearly had strengths in food quality and menu variety, but there were also some disappointing parts to the visit.

Things customers should know, like the mismatch between the menu and actual prices, or how service standards work, could stand to be communicated more clearly, and if the staff service and ventilation improved even a little, the food's satisfaction would naturally carry through to the overall visit experience. If you're after distinctive dishes like beef tartare and cream gnocchi among Suwan restaurants, or searching for pasta in Suwan and Western dining in the Suwan district, this is worth a look before you visit.
