Seongdong Korean restaurant for anniversary dinner: Out of Order

In short

Out of Order (아웃오브오더) is a fusion Korean restaurant near Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. For an anniversary dinner, we ordered vongole kalguksu, gochujang-glazed whole pork belly barbecue, and doenjang carbonara sujebi, with especially thoughtful reservation service. Verdict: the refreshing vongole kalguksu is the one I would return for.

I visited a fusion Korean dining spot about three minutes from Seongsu Station. It is across from the main street, so it was less crowded and easy to find.

We came for an anniversary, but nearby tables were having pre-wedding gatherings too. It felt like a great restaurant for attractive-looking dishes at reasonable prices!!

Walk straight from Seongsu Station Exit 2, and you will spot Out of Order on the second floor.

Head up to the second floor and the plants and lighting welcome you into a cozy atmosphere. The chairs at the entrance seemed to be for waiting guests, but we had reserved in advance through Catchtable.

It has an open kitchen, but the ventilation must be good because there was no smell at all. We had left a reservation message asking for a quiet seat, and they guided us to a reserved table farther inside! (Some restaurants do not seem to read reservation messages even when you leave one... but this place checked everything and even mentioned it when seating us, which was so nice..!)

Dining seats for two to four people

Most tables seat two to four people, and there is also a six-person table. Just as we were finishing, a pre-wedding gathering started there..! It seemed like a good space for meeting up over wedding invitations too.

Pre-meal tea

They first serve omija tea, a five-flavor berry tea, before the meal. It is a small thing, but receiving it makes you feel even better.

There are set menus at lunch, but we visited for dinner and ordered à la carte. Dishes like scallion tteokgalbi risotto, doenjang carbonara sujebi, and vongole kalguksu were around ₩15,000–₩20,000, while meat dishes such as wood-fire dakgalbi and ssamjang aioli steak were in the ₩30,000 range! The prices were more reasonable than at other fusion Korean restaurants.

We ordered these three dishes. I think two dishes might have been a little short for us..!

What does the vongole kalguksu taste like?

The vongole kalguksu was like clam kalguksu, but with less broth, so it also felt a bit like pasta. It was so clean-tasting and savory—an absolute must-order!

Whole pork belly barbecue and doenjang carbonara sujebi

The gochujang-glazed whole pork belly barbecue was sous-vide pork belly, so it was incredibly tender and not greasy at all. The sauce was kind of like a spicy stir-fried pork sauce?? It went so well with the pickled radish and even the pear juice served alongside. Personally, I do not usually seek out spicy stir-fried pork, but the meat was so good that I kept eating it.

I have had similar doenjang carbonara sujebi elsewhere often, but the doenjang flavor was especially mild here. The sujebi dough was very thin and soft, though, and that texture was such a pleasure to eat. They top it with shredded scallions, which suited it so well. The sauce was not particularly thick, though..! It was soft sujebi in a smooth cream sauce, but not rich or cloying, and it was delicious!! My top pick was the vongole kalguksu!!

Complimentary sorbet and receipt-review tiramisu

Three-color watermelon, mango, and kiwi sorbet
Three-color signal sorbet (₩8,000)

The sorbet comes in three flavors—watermelon, mango, and kiwi. My boyfriend loves watermelon, so he said it was super delicious... but mango was more my taste (because I do not really like watermelon..). The kiwi was wonderfully tart and delicious too!!

We did not actually order the sorbet.. The carbonara sujebi came out a little late, and the chef said sorry and gave it to us on the house..! Honestly, we had not even waited that long.. so I was grateful for such thoughtful service..!

This is the chestnut tiramisu you get for writing a receipt review! One layer was packed with chestnuts, making it nutty, nicely sweet, and delicious!!! Write a receipt review and make sure to try it! If you mention it after finishing your meal, they clear the plates and bring the tiramisu. Such a lovely way to end on dessert!

How it was for an anniversary date and wedding-invitation gathering

The staff service was great, and it was fun to watch the DJing. The music was not too loud, so it was nice for talking over dinner. I also liked that ordering alcohol was not mandatory just because it was dinner!! My top pick was the vongole kalguksu!! And for dessert, the three-color sorbet!

Out of Order interior after an anniversary meal

It is a fusion Korean restaurant that is great for an anniversary date, a gathering with friends, or a wedding-invitation gathering, and since it is fusion Korean food, I do not think it will be too divisive!
