Today I'm introducing a place near Isu Station in Seoul, an area with easy transport and plenty of food, where I had premium beef that melts in your mouth. It's Hwaseol (화설) Isu Branch, a Korean BBQ spot near Isu Station that was perfect from the quality of the meat to the side dishes.

It was Jungbok, one of the hottest days of summer, and instead of samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) I boosted my stamina with black hanu beef, of which only 1% nationwide is distributed. Here comes my honest review.

Where is Hwaseol Isu Branch, and where can you park?

Hwaseol Isu Branch is a short walk from Isu Station (Chongshin Univ. Station) on Lines 4 and 7. Come out of Exit 13, turn into the alley right away on your right, and it's opposite the Dongjak Isu Social Welfare Center. It takes about 2–3 minutes on foot, so it's easy to reach by public transport.

It sits right in the middle of the Isu Station eating alley, so it works well as a meeting spot or a place for a group dinner.

For parking, use the mechanical lot in the Angel-in-us building in front of the restaurant. The notice says it costs ₩2,000 per hour with a receipt. Since it's a mechanical lot, though, they say mid-size or larger SUVs can't be accommodated. Keep that in mind if you're driving.

Hwaseol Isu Branch opening hours

Hwaseol Isu Branch is open 11:30–23:00, with a break time of 15:00–17:00.

What is the atmosphere like inside Hwaseol Isu Branch?

Instead of the messy feel typical of BBQ restaurants, Hwaseol Isu Branch catches your eye with a stylish, clean interior. The cozy lighting makes it fine for a date, and just as good for a family meal.

It also has a system that effectively vents smoke and smell while you grill, so even after the meal your clothes don't soak up a heavy meat smell. That's a big plus.

The restroom is on the second floor. The second floor was dark, maybe because it was a weekend afternoon. The space is big, so it would also suit a company dinner.

What three adults ordered at Hwaseol, and the prices

  • Hwaseol 1% black beef platter ₩109,000
  • Wild-greens yuksashimi bibimbap (seasoned raw beef bibimbap) ₩12,000 × 2 = ₩24,000

Three adults visited Hwaseol Isu Branch this day and ordered the Hwaseol 1% black beef platter and two wild-greens yuksashimi bibimbap. Since we had booked through Naver, we were kindly shown straight to a table that was already set.

Does a Naver reservation also reserve your menu?

No. The Naver reservation at Hwaseol Isu Branch only holds your seat, and you have to order the food at the restaurant. The booking page said "1% black beef," so I assumed the menu was reserved too. Not knowing that, we waited a while expecting food to arrive, and only after asking a staff member did the order go in, or so the story goes... haha

Hwaseol 1% black beef platter: which cuts, and how does it taste?

The Hwaseol 1% black beef platter (₩109,000) is the signature menu at Hwaseol Isu Branch, made up of flower-cut beef (kkotsal) + sirloin + rib finger meat, and it comes with a free ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) doenjang stew. Even if it isn't a formal family meeting or a special day, you can enjoy luxurious beef at a reasonable price, and they say the cuts were selected from the world-famous 1% beef.

Doesn't it look gorgeous? The cuts are hand-picked with fantastic marbling, and honestly it makes you gasp.

Grilled over charcoal, the juices burst out and the meat melts the moment it hits your mouth. The quality is so good that even a light dip in salt lets you taste its deep natural flavor.

Do the staff at Hwaseol grill the meat for you?

Yes, Hwaseol Isu Branch has a grilling service where staff put the meat on the grill and cook it for you. The staff started with the flower-cut beef, and I was completely won over by it!

Next, the wagyu sirloin and the rib finger meat went onto the grill one after another. We had booked for 2 p.m., and even at that hour on a Sunday there were lots of customers. Even so, a staff member came by at just the right moment and grilled everything to the best doneness. As someone who's clumsy with the scissors, I really love this kind of grilling service.

Dipped in salt, topped with wasabi and basil pesto~ it vanishes in your mouth in an instant. The 1% black beef really is as delicious as the rumors say.

Hwaseol sanchae yukhoe bibimbap at 12,000 won: how much raw beef?

The wild-greens yuksashimi bibimbap at Hwaseol Isu Branch is ₩12,000, and I was very pleased with the amount of yuksashimi (seasoned raw beef), shaped in a round mound. I ordered it as a hearty dish to fill us up alongside the meat.

There didn't seem to be many wild greens, but that's not what matters. Maybe it's because this is a specialist meat restaurant? When I broke up the yuksashimi, there was plenty of fresh raw beef, and the ₩12,000 price is a steal too. I popped the egg yolk and mixed it all together with the bibimbap sauce.
