I have a secret. My hair is... genuinely thin. ㅠㅠ Because of that I've tried literally everything.

I've patted on scalp concealer powder, sprayed hairline fiber in a pinch, and I'm still wearing hair-volume extensions right now. How does the consultation at Doteurak work?

At Doteurak's main branch, I first filled out a consultation form before the treatment.

It goes through everything in detail — whether you've had SMP before, any hospital treatment or hair transplant history, which area bothers you most, whether you have allergy-prone skin, how long your hair loss has been progressing and its cause, and even what feeling you want after the treatment.

You could pick the look you wanted yourself — 'natural,' 'strong coverage,' or 'trendy design' — which made it feel like a personalized consultation rather than some vague procedure.

Panels introducing the careers of Director Aiden, the head of the whole company, and Ria, the director of the main branch, were set up next to the front desk. Director Aiden turned out to be the person who developed 'shadow dotting,' Korea's first original SMP technique. He's known as a first-generation World Master in the scalp micropigmentation industry, with a career that includes serving multiple terms as SMP director-general of KART (Korea Art Makeup Association) and chief judge for the ISO17024 international standard evaluation contest.

The SMP treatment at Doteurak's main branch took place lying in a comfortable reclining leather chair in a private room.

Right beside it, focused lighting and the treatment tools were all set up. It got me a little nervous, haha.

As soon as I sat in the chair, they adjusted it so I could stretch my legs out and lie back comfortably.

How much does crown SMP hurt compared to scalp painting?

Let me be honest right away about the thing you're probably most curious about: the pain. It was completely different from the stinging, sharp sensation I felt with scalp painting. It felt more like a light scratching on the surface, so it was much easier to get through than I expected.

SMP works by densely inking tiny dots into the shallowest layer of the epidermis so it looks like hair roots have grown in. Because the needle goes in more shallowly than with scalp painting, the pain felt relatively less noticeable.

And honestly, I was surprised by how genuinely funny the director was. He kept making me laugh the whole time, so it felt like I was lying down watching a comedy show. I was pretty nervous at first, but between laughing so much, the treatment was over before I knew it.

Crown and parting before and after: how much filled in

Looking down at my crown before, the parting line stretched out like a bare tree branch, showing off my skin tone in a way I really hated. How did it change?

Ta-da!!! You can tell right away it's filled in, right? What surprised me most looking at my crown right after the treatment was that it wasn't just a dark color filling in the empty spots — it actually had a three-dimensional texture, as if real hair roots had grown in.

The part that used to look so bare and empty whenever I parted my hair was now filled in so much more naturally — you could tell instantly just by looking.

How are the 3 crown SMP sessions divided?

I did mine over 3 sessions this time, and the way they approached each session was pretty systematic.

Rather than going dark all at once, watching the density build up naturally session by session with my own eyes gave me a lot more trust in the process.

Is SMP worth it if you've worried about thin hair for years?

If you're someone like me who's tried nearly every method out there because of thinning hair, I really understand how much that weighs on you. Having thin hair makes people look somehow pitiful, and older than they are. I hated that so much I tried everything under the sun, which is exactly why I can confidently recommend this SMP treatment.

If a bare-looking crown or parting line has been stressing you out every time you take a photo, I can confidently say this treatment really is a quality-of-life upgrade.
