Dining hall with customers during lunch hour

When we visited, it overlapped with lunch hour so most tables were full. Still, it was easy to sit across from my friend and chat while eating, and turnover was fairly quick, which made it a good spot for lunch.

Small kodari jorim with added siraegi on the table

What we ordered: small kodari jorim with siraegi added

With two of us, we ordered the small kodari jorim and added siraegi. As soon as it arrived, the plate piled high with kodari and thick chunks of radish caught my eye. The spicy sauce coated the fish with a glossy sheen — just looking at it made me want rice immediately.

Kodari jorim with spicy sauce and thick radish chunks

Picking apart the kodari flesh, it was moist and the sauce had soaked in all the way through — great with rice. The sauce was spicy with a savory depth, not overwhelmingly hot, more the kind of flavor that keeps calling you back for another bite of rice. My friend and I kept reaching for more.

Picked-apart kodari flesh and seasoned radish

The thick radish chunks in particular had soaked up the kodari sauce and cooked down soft — a great pairing with the fish. I'd tell anyone hunting for kodari near Bongcheon Station to start with the signature dish.

How to wrap kodari, siraegi and bean sprouts in gim

Added siraegi with kodari jorim

Adding siraegi turned out to be a good call. Eating the sauce-soaked siraegi together with kodari flesh added texture and a savory, earthy note.

We also mixed bean sprouts into the kodari sauce and ate them together. The crunchy sprouts and soft kodari flesh paired better than I expected, and with the spicy sauce added in, each spoonful of rice disappeared fast.

Then I put rice on a sheet of gim (dried seaweed), added a bit of kodari flesh, bean sprouts, and sauce, and wrapped it up in one bite. The nutty flavor of the gim went surprisingly well with the spicy kodari sauce — this ended up being my favorite way to eat it. True to a good kodari spot near Bongcheon Station, combining it with bean sprouts, siraegi, and gim

beat eating it any single way, and mixing it up kept every bite interesting to the end.

Side dishes, seaweed soup and the self-serve bar

A whole spread of banchan (side dishes) came out too — bean sprouts, seasoned vegetables, salad, spicy radish, and gim, plus a bowl of seaweed soup.

After a few bites of the spicy kodari jorim, the warm seaweed soup felt soothing — a good thing to eat alongside it.

Side dishes and seaweed soup on the table

If any side dish ran low, there was a self-bar to refill as needed. It also had ingredients set aside for making your own bibimbap.

Nutty sungnyung and steamed egg to finish

There was also warm, savory sungnyung (scorched rice tea) on the side. After finishing most of the meal, sipping warm sungnyung was a nice way to close out the spicy kodari jorim. The steamed egg that came with the meal was warm and bubbling, and made a good pairing between bites of kodari jorim.

Bubbling steamed egg dish

A bite of soft steamed egg followed by a bite of kodari jorim softened the spice each time — a solid combination.

My honest verdict on lunch at Sangdo Neulbori

It was nice being able to chat comfortably with my friend over lunch, and the portion was more filling than I expected.

A generous lunch spread on the table

With a wide range of side dishes, self-bar vegetables for bibimbap, seaweed soup, and savory sungnyung, it felt like a full, satisfying Korean-style spread.
