Gangseo Seoul Korean BBQ with subtly sweet pork ribs: Ihwajeong

In short

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, near Balsan Station. I ordered two portions of marinated pork neck ribs and mul-naengmyeon, and loved the naturally restrained sweetness of the staff-grilled ribs and the spacious setting. Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga is somewhere I would revisit when I’m craving galbi.

A new Korean BBQ spot in Balsan Station’s dining alley

I’ve had quite a few occasions to eat meat around Balsan Station lately, so I’ve been to a fair number of Korean BBQ places near home. This time, I visited the recently opened Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch. It only opened in April, so it’s still a very fresh new spot. Since I’m especially fond of pork ribs, I was pretty happy with this visit and wanted to introduce it.

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga store information

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga is in the dining alley by Balsan Station in Gangseo-gu. It is about 261 m from Exit 4 of Balsan Station, so it is easy enough to reach on foot. You can get there after just a short walk from Exit 4, which makes public-transport access decent for company dinners or gatherings, too. If you are looking for Korean BBQ between the Magok district and Balsan Station, you may like the location right from the start.

Free parking and useful details for reservations

And one thing I personally loved! The parking is really spacious. Parking can be surprisingly stressful when you drive to eat around Magok or Balsan Station these days, but this place has a separate parking building right next door. Free! It is not an underground lot but a four-story parking building, and I heard it can hold as many as 77 cars. That could be a real plus for anyone who has struggled to choose a meeting spot because of parking.

Hours are 11:00–22:00, with last orders at 20:30. If you are visiting as a group or planning to use a private room, it seems more convenient to reserve ahead.

A spacious restaurant with private rooms and group seating

I was surprised by how large the restaurant was from the moment I arrived. I love meat, so I have been to quite a few Korean BBQ spots around Balsan Station, but it had been a while since I had seen one on this scale.

Exterior of the large Korean BBQ restaurant

The exterior has a slightly classic feel, so the atmosphere was a little different from a typical neighborhood Korean BBQ place. Since it has only recently opened, the whole place also felt clearly clean and tidy.

Tables in the spacious restaurant interior

Once inside, it was even bigger than I expected. The tables were not cramped together, and everything looked neatly maintained. Above all, there are group tables and private rooms, so it seemed great for visiting with lots of people.

Large group seating

There is space for everything from small get-togethers to large groups, so it seems well suited to anyone looking for a Magok group company-dinner spot or somewhere to eat with family.

Quiet standalone private room

There are also standalone private rooms, which looked nice for having a quiet meal and conversation. That made me think it would work well for a Magok family gathering or a meal with older relatives, too.

  • Private rooms: 6–100 people
  • Group seating: 30–100 people
  • Full venue rental is also available!!

A galbi-focused menu and 144-hour cross-aging

The menu centers on galbi (Korean marinated ribs), with a wide variety of beef and pork options. There are set menus among the signature offerings, so ordering a set looked like a good choice when visiting with several people.

In particular, this place says it uses a 144-hour cross-aging process. It is said to make the ribs more tender and bring out more umami from the meat. The rib marinade also uses organic pears, which are said to create natural sweetness rather than an artificial sugary taste.

Pork ribs and mul-naengmyeon order

Marinated pork neck ribs and mul-naengmyeon

That day, I ordered two portions of marinated pork neck ribs and mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in chilled broth). If you love pork ribs, you simply cannot resist the marinated-ribs-and-naengmyeon combination, right? 😂

Basic table setting before the meat meal

Before the meat arrived, the basic table setting came out first. There was seasoned scallion salad, cheongpomuk (mung bean jelly), potato salad, vegetable salad, seasoned lettuce, baek-kimchi (mild white kimchi), and more. I liked that every dish was served neatly and that there were plenty of side dishes to enjoy with the meat.

The staff grill the pork ribs for you

And another thing I loved here! The staff grill the meat for you. Pork ribs can actually be a little tricky to grill because of the marinade. They burn if you let your guard down for even a moment, but the staff grilled them really deliciously. As the meat cooked, the aroma of the marinade rose up and somehow made me even hungrier. They even trimmed away the slightly charred bits instead of leaving them. I personally really appreciated that kind of care. The staff were kind as well, so I was comfortable throughout the meal.

Pear juice poured over pork ribs
Pork ribs marinated with pears

Before grilling the pork ribs, they poured something like pear juice over them. They say the rib marinade uses pears rather than sugar to create a natural sweetness. Maybe that is why the marinade was not intensely sweet; the flavor of the meat and the gentle sweetness of the seasoning felt nicely balanced. My friend tried it and said it ranked among the best pork ribs they had ever eaten. I personally enjoyed it so much, too.

And the mul-naengmyeon was seriously ridiculously good... As soon as it arrived, I looked at it and thought, “The naengmyeon here is going to be good too, isn’t it?” And sure enough, it was. The galbi-and-naengmyeon combination never fails.

Finishing with free pear sherbet

After finishing our meal, we could order dessert at the kiosk. Pear sherbet!!! Free!!! It was cool and refreshing after the meat, a lovely clean finish that left me happy through the very end of the meal.

Overall, the space is so large and has private rooms and group seating, so it seems a good fit for anyone looking for a large Korean BBQ restaurant in Magok or a place for a Magok group company dinner. It is good for visiting with family and for coming with a big group of friends, too. In particular, because there are separate rooms, it may be worth checking out if you are looking for a private-room restaurant in Magok.

Spacious Korean BBQ dining area
Visit to Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga by Balsan Station

Honestly, I visited as part of a review experience, but aside from that, I genuinely liked the food itself. I love meat and have been to almost every Korean BBQ spot near my home, yet Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga, which I was trying for the first time because it is new, was more satisfying than I expected. I liked it enough to think, “This is where I should come when I want galbi.” If you want properly good pork ribs near Balsan Station, I think it is worth a visit. Especially if you are looking for somewhere several people can eat together, such as for a company dinner or family gathering, the spacious setting and parking make it comfortable in many ways.
