Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant Saturday 7pm wait, 30 min: Hyeonseonine

I was in Yongsan over the weekend and suddenly craved tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) so badly that I headed straight to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch 🤭❤️ I'd heard this place mentioned as a Yongsan tteokbokki spot for a while, so this time I decided to actually go try it properly!

📍 Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch — 2-13 Hangang-daero 39-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It's an easy walk from Sinyongsan Station Exits 5-6. Open daily from 11:00 to 24:00.

Saturday 7pm — how long was the wait?

I got there around 7pm on a Saturday. As expected for a weekend evening, it was pretty packed 😳 There were about 7 parties ahead of us, and we waited roughly 30 minutes before getting seated!

That said, the restaurant is bigger than it looks, so even though the line looked long, tables turned over pretty fast. 👉 If you're going on a weekend, it might be worth arriving a bit before the dinner peak!

What's in the Hyeonseoni Combo Set, and picking the spice level

What we ordered was the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. It comes with ✔️ tteokbokki ✔️ sundae (Korean blood sausage) ✔️ mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) ✔️ handmade fritters and 3 fish cake skewers. If you want to try a bit of everything, this kind of set is really convenient!

The tteokbokki also comes with a choice of mild, medium, or spicy, so after some back and forth we went with medium 🌶️

Medium tteokbokki — how spicy is it really?

The tteokbokki finally arrived!! The look of it was straight-up old-school Korean snack restaurant vibes, which somehow made it look even more delicious haha 🤤

I had the medium spice, and it was pleasantly spicy with a sweet edge running through it too. I've seen people describe medium as a little spicier than Shin Ramyun, but everyone feels spice differently so take that as just a reference point. Personally, it wasn't that spicy for me.

Rather than tteokbokki that's aggressively spicy for the sake of it, this felt more like a sweet-and-spicy old-school snack restaurant flavor, which I really enjoyed 🥹❤️ The rice cakes were also nice and chewy, pairing well with the sauce.

Don't skip the self-serve fritter crumbs

This was honestly my personal favorite part haha. The self-serve bar has fritter crumbs — basically leftover bits from fried fritters — and dipping the tteokbokki in it lightly is genuinely delicious!!

Adding the fritter crumbs to the tteokbokki sauce gives it a slightly nutty, crispy edge, and I kept reaching for more 🤤 I'd also seen reviews mentioning the self-serve bar has pickled radish and fritter crumbs available. Highly recommend the tteokbokki plus fritter crumb combo!! 👍🏻

How were the fritters, sundae, and mini gimbap?

Then there were the fritters that came with the set! I'm always a bit disappointed when fritters turn out soggy, but these were nice and crispy 🫶🏻 Dipping them in the tteokbokki broth is a combo that never fails haha, especially with a little tteokbokki sauce clinging to the crispy fritter — you get that spicy-sweet plus crunchy texture together, and it was great.

The Hyeonseoni set also comes with sundae and mini gimbap. The sundae works really well dipped in the tteokbokki broth too, and while the mini gimbap is fine plain, I actually thought it tasted better dipped in the tteokbokki sauce haha. Between the tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, and fritters, you end up eating way more than you'd expect 😂

The atmosphere and how to order

The restaurant has a clean, casual atmosphere, making it a good spot for a low-key meal with friends. You order by kiosk, and you grab whatever you need yourself from the self-serve bar. I'd also seen reviews mentioning all kinds of customers there, from people eating alone to groups of friends or families.

There's also a separate jeukseok tteokbokki (hot pot-style tteokbokki) menu, so I'm thinking about trying that next time 👀

Wrapping up the weekend evening visit

There was a wait since it was a weekend evening, but 30 minutes felt manageable! What I liked the most was, in particular,

That combination was what I loved most haha. If it's your first visit, rather than ordering separate items, going with the Hyeonseoni set like I did to try a bit of everything at once seems like a good move.

I want to try the jeukseok tteokbokki next time, so I'll probably stop by again whenever I'm in Yongsan 😋 A solid spot to keep in mind whenever you're craving tteokbokki in Yongsan! ❤️
