Reservation-only Sunday pork belly set at a Bupyeong BBQ: Dongducheon

In short

Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch is a samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) restaurant on Sijang-ro 12beon-gil in Bupyeong, Incheon, where the meat is grilled on a cauldron lid. On a Sunday evening, booked ahead through Naver, the writer ordered the whole pork belly set (35,900 won), mul-naengmyeon cold noodles (7,000 won) and grilled king oyster mushroom (2,500 won), then added another portion of pork belly and fried rice to finish. The meat quality is strong for the price and the grilled kimchi pairing makes Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal an easy pick for group meals and work dinners.

A Bupyeong favorite, Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch grills pork belly on a cauldron lid (sotttukkeong). This place has held its spot as a Bupyeong go-to for a long time, so let me introduce it properly.

Visiting Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, a Bupyeong pork belly spot

This is a Bupyeong spot I've visited with friends every so often! It's always packed and the prices are good, so we drop by now and then — and this time we came back after a while to eat some delicious samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) together.

Sunday evening at Dongducheon: why a reservation is a must

Restaurant seating packed with Sunday evening customers
Table with cauldron lid and restaurant atmosphere

I went on a Sunday evening and the place was completely packed. We'd made a reservation in advance, so luckily we had a table. But if we hadn't booked... haha. If you're planning to visit, I really recommend making a Naver reservation ahead of time — just in case there's no table waiting for you, haha.

What we ordered in Bupyeong: the whole pork belly set and what comes with it

Tablet ordering screen and menu at the table

At Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch you order right from a tablet at the table, and apparently if you order a full set, they give you doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg for free! And if you leave a Naver review, you also get free grilled mushrooms! We ordered ours separately, but I'd recommend writing a review to get it, haha.

From the menu we ordered the whole pork belly set (₩35,900), cold noodles (₩7,000), and grilled king oyster mushroom (₩2,500)! We were still a bit hungry partway through, so we ordered another portion of pork belly plus fried rice, and ate really well, haha.

Basic side dishes including lettuce and pickled onions
Kimchi and bean sprouts placed on the cauldron lid

For side dishes they gave us lettuce and pickled onions, and put kimchi and bean sprouts straight onto the cauldron lid first! Later they added chives to a bowl too, haha. The kimchi gets crisped up in the oil and it's honestly so good — we ran a bit short of kimchi so we ordered more, haha.

How pork belly grilled on a cauldron lid tastes

Whole pork belly chunk sprinkled with coarse salt

The pork belly came out as two big chunks and one smaller chunk, with coarse salt sprinkled lightly on top!

The staff member quickly put it on the cauldron lid and left, haha. She told us to grill the outside until it browned nicely (Maillard reaction!) and call her when it was time to cut it, so we got to work grilling.

Soft steamed egg served as a basic side

The doenjang jjigae and steamed egg that come with a full set order! The steamed egg was soft and the stew was salty with a strong soybean paste flavor — a really tasty side, haha.

Once the meat was grilled, the staff came over and cut everything up, then laid it all out neatly, haha. Like this! They cut up the kimchi and bean sprouts too and arranged everything so it looked delicious.

Once it's grilled to a certain point, you sear both sides briefly and eat it as soon as it's ready!

Cross-section of nicely browned pork belly

Grilled it well, hehe. The juices stay locked inside and burst out when you bite in — I got why this place is always so busy, haha.

A thick, well-grilled piece of pork belly

The price is really reasonable and the taste was great too! No fishy smell at all, and it was savory with a satisfying thickness that made it enjoyable to eat.

Grilled kimchi served together with pork belly

You really have to eat it with this grilled kimchi — as a kimchi lover, this combination was my absolute favorite, haha.

Best sides at Dongducheon: mul-naengmyeon and fried rice

We ordered cold noodles as a side dish! The broth was really, really good.

Pork belly piled on top of cold noodles

We even piled it on top with the meat and ate it together, haha. Of course cold noodles are a must with grilled meat, haha.

Fried rice! When you order it, it comes already seasoned, and they top it with egg.

So we mixed it all together thoroughly, and

Finished fried rice mixed evenly

it turns into this! A perfect finish. Of course, if you're Korean and you've had samgyeopsal, you have to finish with the 'K-dessert', haha.

Where to find the country-of-origin board at Dongducheon

You can check the country of origin for the ingredients right at the payment counter at Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch — I snapped a photo of it, haha. If you need to check, this should be the spot!

Is Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch worth it? Final verdict

If you're craving good-value samgyeopsal grilled on a cauldron lid, I really recommend visiting, haha. The pork belly quality was quite good and the prices were reasonable, making it a great spot to eat with friends. With so many customers, some noise is inevitable, but it would also work well for a work dinner or group gathering, haha. Ate really well and had a great time.
