Parking for one car out front at Yongsan tteokbokki spot Hyeonseonine

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a bunsik (Korean street food) restaurant on Hangangdae-ro 39-gil near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul, where you can order jeukseok tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes cooked at the table) alongside the famous combo sets. The writer drove over with a friend, grabbed the single parking space in front of the shop, and ordered the tteokbokki set for two at medium spice with butter garlic fries, squid fritters and fried rice. Chewy jjolmyeon noodles, two eggs and fried mandu come in the base set, and the fried rice at the end made it a genuinely filling meal.

My friend and I met up in Yongsan to look around, and suddenly I was craving tteokbokki so badly!!

Street view in Yongsan before visiting Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Not just regular tteokbokki though — for some reason I was in the mood for jeukseok tteokbokki (instant hot pot-style spicy rice cakes) that day, so I looked around for a place in Yongsan and ended up at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점)!

I already knew Hyeonseonine's name because it's so famous for bunsik (Korean street food), but this was the first time I found out they had jeukseok tteokbokki on the menu haha

So we went right in and tried it, and it was so much better than I expected!!

Where to park at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch doesn't have its own lot, so parking is basically not available on-site — you need to use one of the paid lots in the nearby alleys. We drove there that day!

But we got really lucky that day lol. There's space for about one car right in front of the shop, and it happened to be open! So I got to park right there and walk straight in haha

Since the spot in front only fits about one car, it's probably smarter to go in expecting to use a paid lot nearby rather than counting on that spot.

Inside Hyeonseonine: kiosk ordering and what's on the self-serve bar

Once we went in, Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch turned out to be bigger than I expected. There were quite a lot of tables and plenty of room, so it was comfortable for the two of us to sit and eat.

I figured a bunsik place would feel a bit cramped and busy, but I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious it was.

You order at the kiosk, and there was also a self-serve bar available.

Pickled radish and sauces at the self-serve bar

The self-serve bar had everything you'd need — pickled radish, snowflake fritters, sundae salt, fritter soy sauce, small plates, aprons, a ladle, and more, which was convenient.

The snowflake fritters especially turned out to be surprisingly delicious once we tried them with the tteokbokki later hahaha

What comes in the jeukseok tteokbokki set for two at medium spice

What we ordered that day was: the jeukseok tteokbokki set for two + butter garlic fries + one order of squid fritters + fried rice.

We came for tteokbokki but couldn't resist the butter garlic fries either~ And we made sure to leave room for the fried rice at the end too — ordered it all pretty thoughtfully.

You can choose the spice level for the jeukseok tteokbokki, and we went with medium!

Pot of jeukseok tteokbokki ordered at medium spice

After a short wait the tteokbokki came out, and even though it was for two people, the portion was pretty generous. Plenty of rice cakes in the pot, and jjolmyeon (chewy wheat noodles) included as standard. Two eggs too, which is such a great combo for anyone who loves tteokbokki haha

There were detailed jeukseok tteokbokki tips printed right on the table so nothing would burn or stick, which made it easy to eat well~ The medium spice was just the right amount of spicy. Not painfully hot, more like a spiciness that kept making you want another bite — we really enjoyed it.

The rice cakes were nice and chewy, and the jjolmyeon had soaked up the broth well, so it was delicious eaten together.

And we dipped the fried mandu deep into the tteokbokki broth too — of course that's the right way to eat these, soaked in the sauce!!

The eggs are good eaten plain too, but you know how it is when you crack one open midway and mix it into the tteokbokki sauce~? And partway through, I tried sprinkling some of the snowflake fritters from the self-serve bar onto the sauce, and the crispy, savory crunch it added went surprisingly well with everything.

Once the fritter crumbs got into the tteokbokki sauce, the texture changed a little, and I kept sprinkling in more little by little.

Butter garlic fries and squid fritters: the add-ons worth ordering

Butter garlic fries topped with garlic sauce

And now, the moment we'd been waiting for — the butter garlic fries! I mean, french fries with garlic dipping sauce? Absolutely irresistible~!

Crispy fries with the garlic sauce drizzled on top were so good >.< Since the tteokbokki was spicy, grabbing a fry every now and then hit the spot with its savory, salty flavor. My friend and I kept picking at them and they disappeared fast haha

Crispy fried squid fritters

We also ordered a plate of squid fritters, and these were fried up nice and crispy too. Squid fritters are great on their own, but dipping them lightly in the tteokbokki broth made them even better, of course. Tteokbokki with fritters is always such a good combo~

Finishing the tteokbokki pan with fried rice

Once we'd worked through most of the tteokbokki, it was time for the fried rice! You mix this one yourself, right at the table.

Fried rice mixed into the leftover tteokbokki sauce

Just toss the rice into the leftover sauce and stir it up — done! The tteokbokki portion had been so generous from the start that I wasn't sure we'd have room for fried rice, but once we started eating it, we somehow found space lol

Mixing the rice into the remaining sauce made for a perfect ending. We'd had the rice cakes, the noodles, the eggs and mandu, sprinkled in snowflake fritters along the way, worked through the butter garlic fries and squid fritters, and finished off with the fried rice — we were genuinely stuffed by the end haha

Is Hyeonseonine worth it for jeukseok tteokbokki in Yongsan?

My friend and I suddenly craved tteokbokki that day and went looking, and I was extra happy to discover that Hyeonseonine had jeukseok tteokbokki on the menu — this was totally new to me. I already knew Hyeonseonine was famous for bunsik, but trying the jeukseok tteokbokki myself, it was genuinely tasty.

If you're hunting for a good tteokbokki spot in Yongsan and specifically want jeukseok tteokbokki, this place is worth a visit. The portion for two was generous, and being able to choose the spice level was great too — with jjolmyeon, eggs, and fried mandu all included as standard, there was a lot of fun in mixing and matching. Add in the butter garlic fries and squid fritters, and finishing with the fried rice, and we walked out properly full~! It's the kind of place that comes to mind whenever we're hanging out in Yongsan and craving bunsik :)
