Aged pork belly platter at a Bupyeong BBQ house: Dongducheon

In short

Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch is a cauldron-lid grill restaurant set inside a converted house at the entrance of Bupyeong Theme Street in Incheon. A 4:30pm visit brought an aged whole pork belly platter for 35,900 won, an extra serving of pork jowl for 14,000 won, and a finish of bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) plus fried rice for 3,000 won. Staff sliced the pork once the outside was seared, and both the portions and the quality at Dongducheon were satisfying.

Retro interior: how quiet is a 4:30pm visit?

From the wallpaper to the décor, the interior of Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Bupyeong Branch feels like visiting grandma's house — total retro haha. I went around 4:30pm before dinner rush and got to see the place nice and quiet, but by the time I left about an hour later, a lot of people were coming in. The space is divided by walls, so it'd be pretty private and great for group gatherings too.

There's this and that stuck on the walls, so it's fun to read around and look at it all haha

Sign explaining the low-temperature aged whole pork belly

They say the whole pork belly at Bupyeong favorite Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is served after low-temperature aging, made with their own hand-made brine and a 30-year traditional low-temp aging method

Kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, and fermented anchovy sauce on the cauldron lid

Side dishes on the cauldron lid: kimchi, bean sprouts and myeoljeot

On the big cauldron lid, they lay out aged napa kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned chives, and myeol치 jeot (fermented anchovy sauce)

Table setting with ssamjang, lettuce, perilla leaves, and other basic side dishes

The basic side dishes are the special ssamjang (dipping sauce), salt, perilla leaves, lettuce, and pickled onions

The steamed egg and doenjang jjigae that come included as standard — that deeply savory doenjang jjigae was a standout haha

Thick aged pork belly, sliced by the staff

The thick whole pork belly platter, freshly brought out !!!! Look at that thickness, it's insane 🥺🥺

Since it's grilled on a hot cauldron lid, you really get that crispy-outside, juicy-inside effect — they grill it with a proper Maillard technique. Ask the staff to grill the outside until crisp

A staff member trained through head-office training on meat prep slices it this beautifully and sets it up for you haha. Since they even handle cutting the meat, you can eat comfortably 😆

My husband's love of pepper,, haha he insists pork belly needs pepper to taste good ,,~

The balance of lean meat and fat is just right, so grilling it this crispy and eating it is pure honey

Pork belly can't go without a drink, right haha

Drinks served alongside the pork belly
Pork belly dipped in fermented anchovy sauce

Dip it in the fermented anchovy sauce, wrap it in a ssam, eat it with the grilled kimchi — so many combinations to pair with the meat, the pork just kept disappearing at Dongducheon Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal!

Bibim naengmyeon ordered as a side

Why a mul-naengmyeon fan picked bibim naengmyeon

I'm the type who absolutely has to have naengmyeon with meat. I'm normally a die-hard mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) person, but the bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) looked good so I ordered it. It's on the spicy side, which actually paired even better with the pork belly haha

Adding a serving of pork jowl on a fresh cauldron lid

As we kept eating, something felt missing for these two pigs ,, 🐷 I ordered an extra serving of pork jowl for ₩14,000, and they first wiped the cauldron lid clean with the pork fat

Wow, that gorgeous color on the whole pork jowl ,, ✨✨

Same as before, once the outside is grilled golden, just ask the staff and they'll slice it up neatly for you

The chewy texture is great and it's fattier and more delicious, the pork jowl — a perfect way to round things out haha

Finishing with 3,000 won fried rice

I also ordered the finishing fried rice for ₩3,000. After frying it, they crack a raw egg right on top haha

I saved a few pieces of meat, chopped them up small, and mixed them into the fried rice!
