Hapjeong Indian restaurant: karahi paneer and extra naan at Mandala

In short

Mandala Indian Lounge is an Indian restaurant and evening lounge for cocktails and shisha, a 3-minute walk from Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. At a window table for two, we had karahi paneer with plain naan (3,000 won) and a mango lassi, and the heat builds only gently at the end, so even a spice-shy friend enjoyed it. Verdict: the karahi paneer at Mandala Indian Lounge was good enough that we ordered a second naan.

I've been craving curry lately. So I searched for Indian food near Hongdae and found a gem in Hapjeong — a place called Mandala Indian Lounge.

Finding Mandala Indian Lounge from Hapjeong Station

Mandala Indian Lounge is about a 3-minute walk from Hapjeong Station. The Mandala sign is right on the building's exterior, so it was easy to spot. It's on the 2nd floor, so I got a little turned around at first haha.

The vibe starts right from the stairs. There's a logo on every step, which makes the climb kind of fun.

The moment the door opens, the smell of spices hits you. I love that.

Restaurant by day, lounge by night — the interior and window seats

The bar counter at Mandala Indian Lounge is bigger than I expected, and they carry quite a lot of liquor. Restaurant by day, lounge by night, I guess?

The window seats are seriously something. Sunlight pours in through the floor-to-ceiling glass — not many Hapjeong restaurants have a view like this.

We sat at a window table for two. We went a bit after lunch rush, so there was plenty of room :)

Mandala Indian Lounge's menu, from vegetable curries to the lunch set

Even the menu cover is pretty. It says they've been open since 2016.

There are quite a lot of vegetable curries. If you're looking for vegetarian options near Hongdae, keep an eye on this page. Chicken, lamb, shrimp, and paneer are all sorted by category — it took me forever to choose lol. There are set menus too, and a couple set that looks handy for two people. The weekday lunch set is ₩12,000. They also do cocktails and shisha. I figured coming in the evening would be a whole different experience.

Receipt-review event sign on the table

There's a little sign on the table saying they'll give you naan if you write a receipt review. No reason not to haha.

The order: karahi paneer, plain naan, mango lassi

There are several types of naan, but I kept it classic with plain naan. At ₩3,000 it's pretty reasonably priced.

For the main, I went with karahi paneer. Paneer is Indian fresh cheese, and surprisingly few Indian restaurants near Hapjeong serve it.

For a drink, I went with mango lassi. Lassi has never let me down.

It came in a wine glass. The look alone is almost cheating.

Whipped cream piled on top, and coconut slices on top of that.

The moment I took a sip, mango pulp came right through the straw. Not too sweet, just right.

How's the karahi paneer? Spice level and paneer texture

Finally, the table was set — curry, rice, naan. Can't resist that combo. Something I've learned wandering Hapjeong restaurants: the places with solid basics last the longest.

Table set with curry, rice, and naan

The karahi paneer arrived, topped with cilantro and chili. Just looking at the color, you can tell it'll have some kick.

The rice is basmati rice — that long, fluffy grain.

The naan comes wrapped in foil — probably so it stays warm to the very end.

Taking a spoonful, I found big chunks of paneer inside.

I tried it over rice. The spice sneaks up on you a bit at the finish, but nothing unmanageable.

The bell peppers are nice and crunchy. The sauce is thick enough to cling to the rice.

Tearing naan with your hands is the unwritten rule. Fresh off the grill, still steaming.

Dipping the naan deep into the curry — honestly, this is what I came here for lol.

The paneer is firmer than tofu but milder than cheese.

Walkable from Hongdae — next time, dinner

All three dishes together made for a nice spread. This one's going on my Hapjeong restaurant list. In the end, we ordered a second naan haha.

It's walkable from Hongdae too, so if you're looking for Indian food near Hongdae, this one's easy to get to. I went with a friend who usually finds heavily spiced places overwhelming, and they ate happily. Adding this to my Hapjeong restaurant list. Next time, I want to come in the evening and enjoy the lounge vibe :)
