Mango lassi and two naans at Mandala, a Hapjeong curry restaurant

In short

Mandala Indian Lounge is an Indian restaurant on the third floor of an alley building near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. After a movie in Hongdae, two curry-loving friends shared plain naan, garlic butter naan, chicken makhani, potato cauliflower curry and mango lassi, and all five dishes were satisfying. With a long curry list plus hangers and phone chargers on hand, Mandala Indian Lounge is an easy recommendation for something different in Hapjeong.

Came here for lunch after watching a movie in Hongdae!! Do you like curry? I could seriously eat curry for three bowls of rice.

So two curry-obsessed women went and checked it out.

How to find Mandala Indian Lounge: third floor in a Hapjeong Station alley

Mandala Indian Lounge sits on an upper floor of a building in the Dokmak-ro 3-gil alley near Hapjeong. Walk down the alley and you'll find restaurant after restaurant. Mandala is one of the upstairs ones!! There's a clear sign, so keep an eye out.

What is the interior and amenities like at Mandala Indian Lounge?

Inside, Mandala Indian Lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows, so it feels clean and airy the moment you walk in. The owner seems to be a foreigner, so it feels like the real deal cooking things haha — 100% trust coming from the chef.

You could really feel that country's vibe everywhere!! The framed art and pictures gave off strong exotic energy. The interior alone gets you excited for the food.

Everything you need is there! There are hangers, and a phone charger too. I ended up using both without even meaning to haha. Nice touch!

What two people ordered: two naans and two curries

The two of us ordered plain naan, garlic butter naan, chicken makhani, potato cauliflower curry, and mango lassi 🥭 — quite a variety, and it was all really delicious!!

There were so many curry sauces to choose from that I worried they might all taste similar, but our order was a total win!

Chicken makhani (butter chicken curry)

🍖 Chicken makhani (below): soft, rich, deeply flavored! Even people who can't handle spice can eat this comfortably. A flavor nobody would dislike!

Potato and cauliflower curry

🥔 Potato cauliflower curry (above): more spice came through here, and it was nice that it tasted different from the chicken makhani!! Less about softness, more about savory depth!

The sauce was so good that even eating just the solids was tasty — I really wanted to order rice and mix it all together.

Plain naan vs garlic butter naan

🍞 Naan review!!! The naan tasted even better warm! Since the curries were already so flavorful, I felt plain naan was better for dipping, but my friend said garlic butter naan was better for her. (Maybe also because it was easier to tear apart by hand.) Everyone's tastes differ, so ordering a couple of kinds and sharing was great — we each dug into our own pick of curry haha.

Mango lassi

🥭 Mango lassi. The taste of lassi seems to vary by restaurant — one place I tried before was so sour it was rough going, but this one was sweeter, which felt right for the season. It paired perfectly with the food.

What to order next time at Mandala Indian Lounge

I heard tandoori chicken is also a best-seller, so I'm definitely trying that next time. There's such a wide menu that my friend and I promised each other we'd come back to try more. I feel this urge to explore a whole new world of spices.

Stickers next to the register

There were stickers by the register when we paid! They said we could take one, so I grabbed one. Sticking it in my diary should give it a nice exotic touch haha.
