Mapo gyukatsu restaurant with Solomon's seal tea ochazuke: Gyudo
In short
Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a smoked gyukatsu restaurant on the basement level of the Obelisk apartment shopping arcade in Mapo, Seoul, connected directly to a Mapo Station exit. On a Sunday evening the writer drove over, ordered the 47,000-won yakiniku set, grilled smoked gyukatsu and yakiniku on a personal bangjja brassware brazier, and finished with scorched-rice ochazuke made from the free broths — Solomon's seal tea, bonito and pork bone. With parking inside the building and unlimited rice refills, Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok is worth a return trip in Mapo.

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is already a well-known gyukatsu spot in Mapo. I tried gyukatsu in Yeouido last time and it instantly became one of my all-time favorite foods, so this time I visited the Gyudo branch in Mapo!

Even by public transport, it's connected straight to the Mapo Station exit, so it's really a 1-minute walk. We came by car, and in-building parking made it super convenient. Parking spots at restaurants in Seoul, especially in Mapo, are seriously precious... this is truly the best of the best.

Sunday evening at Gyudo: atmosphere and solo seats
We visited on a Sunday evening and it was almost fully booked! A true Mapo favorite with waits even on weekdays! The interior is clean and nice, so there were lots of couples on dates as well as friends and families.
There are proper solo seats too, so it looked great for office workers eating alone at lunchtime. Even if it weren't near my office, I feel like I'd come once every three days... For solo dining near Mapo Station, Gyudo might be the best.
Does the smoke smell cling? Coat lockers at the door
Gyudo uses an offset smoker for wood smoking, offering a truly one-of-a-kind smoked gyukatsu — and you can really smell the smoke in the restaurant! Not an unpleasant food smell, but a delicious one! Still, since a bit of the smoky scent can linger, I'd recommend putting your coat in the coat locker provided.

What comes in the 47,000-won yakiniku set
The menu I chose that day was the ₩47,000 yakiniku set. It comes with smoked gyukatsu + smoked yakiniku + gamtae mengran (seaweed-wrapped pollock roe) + 1 drink. Even the menu itself looks so upscale... you can tell every piece of tableware got a lot of thought. I considered the gyukatsu hire (fillet), limited to 15 servings a day, but with the gamtae mengran included, there was no reason not to go with the set menu!

Cutlery pouch and rice flakes in your own drawer
While waiting after ordering, I found my own drawer with a neatly packed cutlery pouch and flake topping inside! This is the first time I've seen a custom-made cutlery pouch like this — you can feel the care put into every single utensil!👍

Grilling on a personal bangjja brassware brazier
A personal brazier custom-made by Gyudo, using traditional bangjja brassware! Amazing that they even made the brazier themselves... We were two people, so we shared one brazier, and the staff changed the grill plate very frequently and kept a hawk-eye on the fuel, so we never had any trouble using it!

Smoked gyukatsu and gamtae seaweed pollock roe on one tray
The long-awaited gyukatsu set, laid out. Everyone, forget about going to Japan for this... it comes out better here than the gyukatsu I had in Japan?
Just look at the color of that smoked gyukatsu. You can tell it's crispy outside, juicy inside just by looking... and the meat is clearly high-quality sirloin, bright red.

The gamtae mengran comes lightly seasoned. Whatever the secret seasoning is, the pollock roe isn't salty at all and just bursts with umami👩🍳. They said the radish salad and all the sauces are handmade too, and I liked that none of them were too strongly seasoned!

How the yakiniku set is served at Gyudo
The yakiniku set. There's a separate tsuyu sauce for dipping generously, and the meat comes lightly smoked just on the surface! This one also gave off a nice wafting smoky smell.

This kind of detailed grilling really wakes up your appetite!!!! The marbling looked great too, so I was excited even before grilling.
They kindly put the gyukatsu and yakiniku side by side on the grill and cook them together.

First bite with wasabi, the next with salt
Dipping in sauce is great, but I'd definitely recommend adding wasabi on your first bite to taste the pure flavor of the meat! Truly heavenly...✨️ Dipping in salt is also recommended!

After one bite it was so good I immediately kept loading meat onto the grill without a break haha. I'm annoyed at myself for only being able to describe it as 'melts in your mouth'...

Unlimited refills of Sindongjin cauldron rice
Gyudo's rice was special too — freshly cooked rice made with the famous Sindongjin rice! It's cooked in a cauldron, so it's incredibly glossy. Even eaten plain and hot, it was delicious!

And this rice even comes with unlimited refills. If you're someone who usually eats a lot, shout it out at home~~! No need to feel awkward, it's unlimited refills!

On the freshly cooked rice I piled on poached egg, then pollock roe, then yakiniku, and just ate and ate. Seriously though, why is the yakiniku so good... it's one of the best beef dishes I've had in my life... truly...

Korean-style ochazuke from the free broth bar
Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo's signature free broth service!!! This is genuinely amazing. You can take the Solomon's seal tea, bonito, or pork bone broth and pour it over the leftover burnt rice from your pot rice, making it like an ochazuke. Who came up with this idea... seriously... they deserve an award!!!
Bringing the broth over in a proper little kettle to make Korean-style ochazuke at your table!!! A collaboration between Korean sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and Japanese ochazuke. My husband went with pork bone, I went with bonito, and we each insisted ours was better😂

Don't forget the rice-flake topping
Don't forget to add the flake topping from your drawer, too. It brings the flavor up another level. We honestly only remembered halfway through eating!!! Don't forget the flakes — pull them out onto the table right away haha. We really ate until we were stuffed.

Is Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch worth it?
Even down to the dental floss and fabric softener at the end, Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo really shows attention to detail. The yakiniku was genuinely life-changing, so I'll definitely be getting it to go again soon!!! Highly, highly recommend Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo✨️💯
