Suwon eel restaurant, weeknight salt eel with my husband: 99Jangeo88

A weekday evening in Suwon Homaesil and a sudden eel craving

On a weekday evening my husband and I went to 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch (99장어88 수원호매실본점) in Homaesil, Suwon, for salt-grilled freshwater eel. We were wondering what to eat, and out of nowhere we were craving eel 😊 We don't actually eat eel very often, but maybe we were running low on energy, because we suddenly couldn't stop thinking about it. So I searched for a good eel place near Suwon Homaesil and found 99Jangeo88.

We booked through Naver Reservation before going, and the place was already pretty lively, with a team having a company dinner and lots of families.

If it's this busy on a weekday evening, it really must be a proper eel restaurant in Suwon Homaesil 😉

You can park in the building's underground car park, so it's easy to come by car~

The car park entrance is next to Ujeo Coffee!

Pre-grilled salt eel platter, no waiting

We didn't even hesitate and ordered the salt-grilled eel platter. The eel came out very soon after we ordered~

The eel arrives already pre-grilled, so you only need to grill it a little more at the table 😙 We're impatient people, haha, so not having to wait long was great 🔥

I expected salt-grilled eel to be mild, but there was honestly no fishy smell at all! Some people only eat seasoned eel, or don't like eel, because of the smell, right? But the eel here had no smell and tasted so clean that I could have eaten it without any sauce 👍

It's pre-grilled, so it was crispy outside and moist inside, grilled just right. Insanely good 🔥

Grilling time for pre-grilled eel: 4 minutes, flip, 3 minutes

Grill the pre-grilled eel for 4 minutes, flip it, then 3 more minutes!

Once the cut side is cooked, dunk it in the sauce mixed with shredded ginger and wasabi, and it was seriously so good..🥹 There's a reason this place is known as a Suwon Homaesil eel favorite!

It's good on its own, but with the sauce the richness disappears and you keep reaching for more!

Is one salt-grilled platter enough for two?

One platter filled the whole grill, which was plenty for the two of us.

It went so well with the pickled perilla leaves too 👍

Doenjang stew, chive salad and kimchi noodles: sides that fit perfectly

Doenjang (soybean paste) stew comes with the eel by default, and taking a spoonful between bites of eel was just right 😆

The stew is packed with vegetables, so it's satisfying to spoon up!

The chive salad side dish was also a really good match when wrapped up with the eel!

At the end we had kimchi noodles (김치말이국수, ₩8,000) as a clean, refreshing finish~

99Jangeo88 lunch special and plans to come back

99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch also runs a lunch special at lunchtime (10:00 to 15:00)! Eel grilled for dinner is great, but lunch seems like a lighter, better-value way to enjoy it. It also looks good for a solo meal or a light office lunch~

This visit showed me 99Jangeo88 is a place to enjoy eel without any pressure 💜 It comes pre-grilled so it's easy to eat, I was happy with the clean eel flavor with no fishy smell, and the portion was generous, so the two of us never felt it was too little.

Next time I want to try the seasoned grilled eel 😆

The salt-grilled eel was better than I expected, so coming back felt like a natural next step. If you're looking for a good eel restaurant in Homaesil or Suwon, it's worth a visit.
