Apsan Korean restaurant: 3-doenjang beef belly stew, Cafe Dongi
In short
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a Korean restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, near Apsan. A regular since the first Cafe Dongi branch ordered the Dongi jeyuk set (spicy stir-fried pork), the beef belly doenjang stew set, the 40-year master's kimchi stew set and a small koji-aged tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The beef belly doenjang stew, made with a blend of three traditional doenjangs, made the strongest impression, and the unlimited multigrain rice, fried eggs and barley puffs at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch left the writer very full and happy.

When you want someone else to make a home-style meal near Apsan
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch (카페동이 대명역점) is a Korean restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, near Apsan, where you can get a clean, filling Korean meal. I cook at home pretty diligently, but for some reason, once the weekend comes, a home-style meal made by somebody else feels extra welcome.
I recently had business near Apsan and was wondering where to eat. I wanted something neat and hearty, and that's how I ended up at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch.
Actually, I've been going to Cafe Dongi since the first branch in the SK Leaders View shopping complex, and I remember visiting the Chimsan branch a few times too. Maybe that's why Cafe Dongi always brings to mind a "good-value meal" and warm, generous hospitality.

What does Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch serve unlimited?
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch serves unlimited multigrain rice, fried eggs and barley puffs (boricheolgang). These days there are so many popular restaurants and so many menus, but sometimes the word "bapjip" (a rice-meal restaurant) alone carries a certain heartiness.

Cafe Dongi captures that feeling well. Unlimited multigrain rice, fried eggs and barley puffs isn't just about eating a lot; you can feel the message of "eat until you're full before you go."

It reminds me of the generosity of my mom pushing me to eat just one more spoonful when I was little. So after the meal, along with the satisfaction of having eaten well, my heart somehow feels full too.

How is koji-aged tangsuyuk different from regular tangsuyuk?
Crispiness from rice koji
The koji-aged tangsuyuk (Korean sweet and sour pork) at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is said to use a rice koji batter instead of wheat flour, with a natural fermentation process. Maybe that's why the small koji-aged tangsuyuk I ordered along with the meal feels a little different from ordinary tangsuyuk.
The coating is crispy without being heavy, and the mild, plain flavor comes through first.

The meat wasn't tough but tender, with a nice texture, and it was the kind of tangsuyuk that goes well alongside a rice set rather than a heavily seasoned one.
"A tangsuyuk that pairs naturally with a Korean set meal" is exactly how I'd describe it.

Dongi jeyuk-bokkeum set with a smoky grill flavor
A bowl of rice that vanishes in seconds
The Dongi jeyuk-bokkeum set (spicy stir-fried pork) at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a tray with open-flame-grilled pork, with seaweed soup on the side. It looked filling just by looking at it.

A subtle smoky aroma from the flame comes through, and the vegetables keep a crisp texture, which makes it fun to eat.

Above all, the seaweed soup served with it rounds out the tray. It's not just spicy pork; the flavor is balanced and good with rice, so I was very satisfied with it as a meal.

What does the beef belly doenjang stew set taste like?
Doenjang alone makes you want another bowl of rice
The beef belly doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is said to blend three traditional doenjangs, and for me it was one of the most memorable dishes. It felt like the rich flavor of good doenjang you'd get at a barbecue restaurant, with deep savory umami added.
With the nuttiness of the beef belly added, rice follows naturally with every spoonful of broth. It was such a satisfying doenjang stew that I even thought of having two bowls of rice.

The 40-year master's kimchi stew set
Kimchi stew cooked just right
The kimchi stew at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch uses kimchi that is neither too sour nor underripe, just moderately aged, so the flavor feels deep. The broth is rich yet clean, and the balance of meat and tofu is good, so you don't get tired of it to the end.
The more familiar the dish, the more the basics matter, and in that respect this was a reliably tasty kimchi stew.

A slightly more valuable meal
One of Cafe Dongi's company mottos is said to be "We share happiness with our neighbors through a slightly more valuable meal." After finishing my meal at Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch, those words somehow struck a chord.

It's a place that doesn't just fill your stomach but puts you in a good mood with generous hospitality and a plentiful spread. The food was good, but the feeling of "I ate well and I'm full" stayed with me even more.

If you're looking for Korean food around Apsan and want a hearty, home-style meal, Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch seems like a good choice.
