Gangneung makguksu restaurant with pork-wrapped bibim noodles: Gossi's

While traveling around Gangneung, I stopped by a restaurant near Gangmun Beach serving buckwheat dishes and spicy sundubu (soft tofu). This is Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch, a second-generation restaurant making its own buckwheat noodles, where you can eat while looking out at an open ocean view.

For parking, using Gangmun Public Parking Lots 1 or 2 gets you 1 hour free, and asking at the counter can get you extra support — so even if you drive, you can walk in without worrying about parking.

Right by the entrance, next to the register, there's a Gangwon specialty gift corner, so you can pick up a little something after your meal too.

Looks like quite a few celebrities have visited already — the wall was covered in signatures.

At Gangmun Public Parking Lots 1 and 2, you get 1 hour free after entry, and you can request a 30-minute extension after that. Entry after 6pm is free parking.

There are baby chairs and a self-serve corner set up too, so it's comfortable to eat here even with family in tow.

Walking up to the second floor, you're greeted by high ceilings and a neatly maintained, tidy dining hall. It's a panoramic ocean-view layout, where you can enjoy the refreshing Gangmun sea beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows while eating — a setting that pleases both the eyes and the mouth at once.

The tables are spaced comfortably apart, making it a great spot for a family meal or a date. The interior is kept hygienically clean, so I could enjoy a comfortable atmosphere throughout the meal.

We visited early, just before noon, slightly ahead of peak time, so we could get seated comfortably without any wait.

What's on the menu at Gossi's Donghae Makguksu?

What we ordered: spicy sundubu kalguksu, mul-makguksu, spicy bibim guksu and boiled pork

Because the noodles are made in-house, the dishes came out quickly after ordering, so we didn't have to wait long before digging in. Plates, wet wipes, and extra side dishes were all neatly available at the self-serve corner.

The soft, savory Chodang sundubu (Gangneung-style soft tofu) from Gangneung paired perfectly with the chewy kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) strands and the spicy, deep broth.

Spicy enough to be called the ultimate hangover cure, yet softened by the tofu's gentle texture, it had me scraping the bowl clean down to the last spoonful of broth. I hadn't even had a drink the night before, but it still felt like a hangover cure. 👍🏻

The basic mul-makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) had a clean broth with a pleasant buckwheat aroma spreading through it — not overpowering, but with a refined savoriness.

Next up was the spicy bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), where the umami-packed sauce was well soaked into the nutty buckwheat noodles.

It wasn't overly sharp — spicy and sweet, but finishing clean, which really got the appetite going. Eating it wrapped with the pork was such a great combination.

The pork included in the set had no gamey smell at all, and the meat was tender with plenty of moisture. Wrapping a moist piece of pork in the house-made spicy bibim noodles created a fantastic balance between the meat's savoriness and the sweet-spicy kick of the sauce.

Is Gossi's Donghae Makguksu worth a stop near Gangmun Beach?

Looking out at the Gangmun Beach ocean view while thoroughly enjoying high-quality house-made buckwheat makguksu, tender pork, and spicy sundubu kalguksu made for a truly satisfying time. Thanks to the clean, hygienic setting and precise flavors, this is a place I'd definitely want to visit again.
