Suwon Station sashimi bar: thick aged flatfish & sea bream at Seonjuga

In short

Seonjuga Suwon Station (선주가 수원역점) is an izakaya specializing in aged sashimi, near Exit 7 of Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Two people ordered the aged flatfish and sea bream sashimi, a seafood minari pancake (minari-jeon, with Korean water parsley) and a bottle of Saero Salgu soju for 61,000 won. Seonjuga cut the sashimi as thick as a textbook, so the sashimi and pancake alone were filling. Seonjuga Suwon Station is worth a visit for anyone who loves thick-cut aged sashimi.

Suwon Station has become familiar territory by now. And I finally tracked down a good bar near Suwon Station too: Seonjuga Suwon Station (선주가 수원역점), an aged sashimi spot serving aged flatfish and sea bream.

Stylish exterior of Seonjuga Suwon Station

What is Seonjuga Suwon Station like inside, and is it good for groups?

The exterior is stylish, but if you think it's just a small izakaya from the outside, you're in for a big miscalculation.

Once you step inside, there's a spacious room that looked more than able to handle big groups. And what I care about most in a bar or izakaya is the restroom, and this one has (?) clean, separate men's and women's restrooms inside.

Seonjuga Suwon Station menu and what we ordered

The two of us ordered the aged flatfish and sea bream sashimi (眞숙성광어와 도미) for ₩38,000, the seafood minari pancake (해물듬뿍미나리전) for ₩18,000 and a Saerosalguh (새로살구) for ₩5,000, ₩61,000 in total. There are plenty of other dishes besides sashimi, so even if you're not into aged sashimi, there's a ton to eat, no worries!

♥♥♥ But the two of us are sashimi killers. We love raw fish so much. ♥♥♥

Modeum Hansang: an assorted set of 4 dishes you choose

One unique item at Seonjuga was the modeumhansang (a set where you choose 4 dishes). You can customize it with 4 of these: domibegogi (boiled pork slices), Korean beef yukhoe (raw beef), beef tataki, aged salmon, boiled octopus, squid in sweet-sour vinegar sauce, mixed mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), skate sashimi, skate salad, flatfish & sea bream, and sweet shrimp & sea urchin. We're tearful portion-control people, so the aged flatfish & sea bream and the seafood minari pancake were plenty.

Soju served in an ice box

Soju served in an ice box

Since we were having aged sashimi, we ordered soju, and it came in an ice box,, what a thoughtful owner! Honestly, when the drinks arrive before the food, they slowly lose their chill, so I always have to ask for them to come out with the food. At Seonjuga, no such request was needed. Full marks for thoughtfulness.

How was the seafood minari pancake?

The first dish out at Seonjuga was the seafood minari pancake (₩18,000). It was pretty big, and the combo of shrimp and squid on top with the fresh minari (water dropwort) was the best.

That crispy look is a work of art,,♥

How was the aged flatfish and sea bream sashimi?

But the star of the day wasn't the minari pancake. The aged flatfish and sea bream sashimi at Seonjuga (₩38,000) is just so good. The 眞 (jin, "true") in the name makes it a double-true, true-true deal, so how could I not love it?

Salt gimbap served with the aged sashimi

Even the salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), which seems like nothing special, is delicious. It really is nothing special, yet so tasty, and it pairs so well with the flatfish and sea bream.

Aged sea bream sashimi cut as thick as a textbook

Aged sea bream sashimi. What kind of sashimi has a single slice as thick as a major textbook? Seonjuga cuts its sashimi really thick, so people like me who love thick-cut sashimi go wild, absolutely wild. And look how plump and glossy it is even though it's aged. Aged sea bream sashimi where softness and springiness coexist,,♥

Chewier aged flatfish sashimi

Aged flatfish sashimi. Can a single slice of flatfish really be this generous?? The flatfish had an even chewier texture than the sea bream, which was the highlight.

The flatfish is sliced in long strips, so it's great wrapped in seaweed or rolled up in the salt gimbap.

Are sashimi and pancake enough to fill two people?

The portions at Seonjuga are huge, so two people got stuffed on just the aged flatfish and sea bream sashimi and the seafood minari pancake. One slice of sashimi, one sip of soju each, and suddenly the plate was empty,, haha. Filling up on sashimi, what a luxury,,!!!
