Charcoal chicken galbi has a different charm than the pan-fried kind!

Instead of the usual pan-fried chicken galbi I eat all the time, I wanted something with that deep smoky charcoal flavor. While looking, I saw a video of chefs Hong Seok-cheon and Lee Won-il eating it happily, and headed straight to Ondogye in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, said to be one of Seoul's three best charcoal chicken galbi spots.

Given all the praise from various media and reviews, my expectations were high — and the friendly service and taste didn't disappoint. I ended up having such a filling meal that I tried every single sauce on the menu.

Entrance and waiting seats at Ondogye's annex

Ondogye is located in Jjukkumi Alley, across from Cheonho-dong's Rodeo Street. Since I had a reservation, I was directed to the annex, about 30 meters from the main building. The annex has its own big sign just like the main store, and true to its reputation as a place with a wait, it even has seating out front.

The interior overall was clean with generous spacing between tables, and each cozy round table came with its own charcoal grill and ventilation. Being dinnertime, there were quite a few diners around, giving it a comfortable, lively, and friendly atmosphere.

Ondogye's menu and how to order

Ondogye's menu is posted on the wall, and you order by calling a staff member over. The chicken galbi comes in three flavors — garlic salt, soy sauce, and spicy — with a generous 270g per serving. There's also salt-grilled chicken neck, fried gizzards, vegetable skewers, steamed egg, doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), and rice balls. Plenty of makgeolli (rice wine) and other drinks pair well with the chicken galbi too.

ORDER — Garlic salt chicken galbi (1 serving), soy sauce chicken galbi (1 serving), spicy chicken galbi (1 serving), rice ball, soju

What comes with the meal: fried gizzards and doenjang stew

Basic table setup with pickled radish, green onion kimchi, shredded green onion, fried gizzards, and doenjang stew

Ondogye's basic table setting came with various sauces, pickled radish, green onion kimchi, shredded green onion, fried gizzards, and doenjang stew. It was already a generous spread just from the basics. The fried gizzards were fried fresh to order — crispy and chewy, perfect with a drink — and the doenjang stew, loaded with big chunks of tofu, had a deep flavor from Korean dried seafood and vegetables simmered together.

Pre-seared garlic salt chicken galbi and soy sauce chicken galbi

The garlic salt and soy sauce chicken galbi arrived pre-seared, one serving each. Along with mushrooms stamped with the restaurant's name and two thick slices of garaetteok (Korean rice cake), each serving had two large chunks of chicken.

Though the surface was pre-seared, they were placed straight onto the charcoal grill to cook through evenly. Ondogye offers full-grilling service where staff cut and grill all the meat for you, so even charcoal-grilled chicken galbi — easy to overcook — comes out perfectly done by an expert hand.

The garlic salt and soy sauce chicken galbi turning golden brown. The two chunks on the left are garlic salt, and the two on the right are soy sauce — you can clearly see the soy sauce version has a darker color from the marinade.

Staff member cutting and grilling the meat as part of the full-grilling service

Staff came by regularly, cutting the pieces to size, flipping them back and forth, and carefully adjusting the heat, so the juices stayed locked in and the meat came out rich with charcoal aroma. The garlic salt and soy sauce flavors soaked in beautifully, and with the subtle smoky charcoal note added on top, it was clearly different from regular pan-fried chicken galbi. The charred edges were especially delicious!

The garlic salt chicken galbi has a light seasoning that lets the chicken's fresh, tender flavor shine through, while the soy sauce version has a sweet, savory richness that's likely to please everyone. Paired with the wasabi, pickled radish, green onion kimchi, and shredded green onion that came alongside, every bite felt varied and interesting.

Spicy chicken galbi, 270g for 17,000 won — how spicy is it?

The first two flavors were so good I wanted to try the spicy one too, so I ordered an extra serving.

Two pre-seared chunks of spicy chicken galbi

The spicy chicken galbi also arrived pre-seared, in two big chunks, and the sight of the spicy marinade soaked in and browned nicely was especially mouth-watering. Again, staff grilled it perfectly, so I could just leave the cooking to them and focus fully on conversation and eating.

The spicy chicken galbi's heat level isn't very strong, so it might feel mild to those who love spicy food, but it's just spicy enough for even those who can't handle heat to enjoy comfortably. The smoky charcoal flavor combined with the slight kick of spice made it a perfect finish after the garlic salt and soy sauce — if you're trying all three flavors, I'd recommend saving the spicy one for last :)

Ondogye's rice ball (3,000 won)

I also ordered the rice ball from the meal menu to eat alongside the charcoal chicken galbi.

Rice ball ingredients including seaweed flakes and seasoning

It came with a generous portion of rice, seaweed flakes, and seasoning, and since a charcoal grill setup means fried rice isn't an option, topping the rice ball with all the different perfectly-grilled chicken galbi flavors made for a satisfying, hearty meal.

Grilled garaetteok dipped in honey
A glass of Coke served with a lemon slice

And the garaetteok grilled alongside the chicken galbi was delicious dipped in the honey that came with it — sweet and tasty. When I ordered a Coke, they added a lemon slice to the glass, which was such a nice touch :)

Who should book Ondogye in Cheonho

Visiting Ondogye and trying the entire chicken galbi menu, all three sauces were delicious in their own distinct ways, and the side dishes served alongside were clearly made with care, which made the meal even more satisfying.

What I especially liked was being able to focus on conversation and eating thanks to the full-grilling service — grilling meat over charcoal isn't easy, but here you can enjoy it comfortably, making it perfect for a drink or two as well. I'd recommend it to anyone in Cheonho looking for something different in charcoal chicken galbi, anyone who wants to relax and let staff handle the grilling, and anyone looking for a spot for a group gathering.
