Fridge-aged fig pistachio cake at a Gangnam cake shop: Chef Cho

In short

Chef Cho Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam is a cake shop run by a master pastry chef on the central line of Sweet Park, B1 of Shinsegae Gangnam in Seocho, Seoul. The writer bought the fig pistachio cake, topped with autumn figs and pistachio cream, tasted a bite straight away, then kept it in the fridge and shared it with a friend later — the cream firmed up and the flavor jumped after chilling. The verdict: let a Chef Cho cake rest in the fridge instead of eating it the moment you buy it.

As a bread-and-dessert lover, I always make a point of eating seasonal fruit as dessert. So while out shopping at Shinsegae for autumn, I stopped by Chef Cho — the cake shop that's been buzzing lately as a 'master of life' cake spot among the Gangnam Shinsegae desserts — for a sweet energy refill.

This cake shop from a 23-year master pastry chef, already known from its Yeongdeungpo and Mullae flagship stores, has now landed in Shinsegae Gangnam too. The cake combining sweet fig with nutty pistachio cream delivered a clean, sweet flavor that really let me savor the taste of autumn.

Where is Chef Cho in Shinsegae Gangnam, and when is it closed?

The Chef Cho store sits on B1 of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam, on the central line of Sweet Park. Note that Shinsegae Gangnam is closed on September 24–25 for the Chuseok holiday, with normal operations resuming Saturday the 26th.

The colorful array of cakes caught my eye right away, and I could see both locals and foreign tourists stopping in their tracks to pick up desserts.

Chef Cho was once featured as one of the 'four great kings of cake' on the TV show Master in the House. You can meet cakes made by a certified master pastry chef with 23 years of experience.

Fresh fruit sourced daily, 100% dairy whipped cream, and the master's know-how all come together — and the fig cake I tried this time was satisfying as expected. The lineup changes with the season, so I'm already promising myself I'll try the strawberry cake come winter!

Chef Cho's September cakes and the sizes on offer

Right now, as summer turns to fall in September, the Chef Cho Sweet Park showcase had an especially wide variety on offer — mango, peach + strawberry, and fig.

Sizes range from mini to No.1, No.2, and single slice, so it works equally well as a quick Sweet Park dessert or as a cake for an anniversary or birthday.

Everything looked delicious, so after some deliberation, today's pick was the fig pistachio! Generously piled with fig at peak autumn season plus nutty pistachio cream — I just had to try it.

I already went to the VIPS mango buffet this summer and had my fill of mango bingsu, cake, and parfait, but seeing this gorgeous visual still sparked my curiosity — the real mango rose cake. Mango slices shaped like a rose looked so elegant and pretty.

Sweetness piled on sweetness — the peach berry, combining peach and strawberry, looked just as tempting as the one above.

Packaging, the cooler bag, and how long the cake keeps

Chef Cho Shinsegae Gangnam also sells cooler bags separately, so if you have any distance or time to travel, I'd recommend adding one.

The Chef Cho fig pistachio cake, with its reddish fig flesh against the greenery of the pistachio color, had a ripe autumn mood written all over it from the very first look.

The cake must be kept refrigerated, and since it uses 100% dairy whipped cream and fresh fruit, eating it as soon as possible is recommended. The shelf life is a maximum of 2 days after purchase.

was a nice touch — and there were big chunks of fig inside the cream too, so you could really tell they used a whole pack of figs without holding back.

I carefully removed the clear wrap band and cut it in half.

Honestly, out of curiosity I took a small forkful first, then took the rest home, refrigerated it, and finished tasting it later with a friend. After chilling in the fridge, the fruit's sweetness and the cream's thickness came alive and the flavor leveled up.

Fig pistachio cake taste: fresh bite vs. after a chill in the fridge

The Chef Cho fig pistachio cake is made with organic flour, 100% dairy whipped cream, and fresh domestic figs sourced daily — the clean cream, the soft and fluffy sponge, and the fig with just the right sweetness all came together in harmony.

The nuttiness of the pistachio was already good enough eaten plain, but after chilling in the fridge it was about 1.7 times more delicious than the first bite! As the pistachio cream's thickness deepened, the richness of the flavor deepened along with it, and it was so much better — everyone should definitely try it after chilling in the fridge!!

Even my friend, who normally isn't a fan of cake, ate it happily — the fruit and cream combination was that perfect. A cake made by a master pastry chef really is different.

Final verdict on Chef Cho's fig pistachio cake

This was my recommendation review of the fig pistachio cake at Chef Cho, the Sweet Park dessert shop in Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam. Made with fresh seasonal fruit, 100% dairy whipped cream, and a recipe built on a certified master pastry chef's know-how, the fig cake balanced the fruit's sweetness with the cream's clean, sweet flavor in a way that left me fully satisfied. You could tell the ingredients were used without holding back, which made the price feel well worth it.

Unfortunately, the department store location is closed for Chuseok, but the Yeongdeungpo and Mullae flagship stores stay open — keep that in mind! There's plenty happening after the holiday too, from college entrance exams to Halloween, so I'd recommend picking up something sweet for a special date or gift.
