In short
Daseon Kalguksu is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant and Korean drinking spot three minutes on foot from Exit 14 of Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. Arriving before 5pm on a weekend, the writer ordered Cham Daseon Kalguksu for 10,000 won, a mixed jeon (pan-fried pancake) platter for 26,000 won and whelk chive salad for 20,000 won, which came with thin somyeon noodles as standard, plus Chamisul soju at 5,000 won. Today's post is about Daseon Kalguksu, a Gyodae Station restaurant that isn't just for eating — it's also a Gyodae bar.

The kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) is made with a broth simmered daily from 8 ingredients, and with whelk salad and a pancake platter on top, it was a perfect spot for a drink or two.

Every dish seemed made with real care — even though it was before 5pm, there were customers of all ages, some there for a meal, some already at the day-drinking tables.
Where is Daseon Kalguksu, and is there parking?
Daseon Kalguksu is located at 69, Banpo-daero 26-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul, South Korea (1st and 2nd floors), open from 11:00 to 23:30. It's a 3-minute walk from Exit 14 of Gyodae Station, and about 3 cars can park in front of the restaurant.
We arrived just before 5pm on a weekend. The parking area is narrow, so if you're driving, it's best to call ahead.
Daseon Kalguksu has even been featured in the media, and one big plus is that it runs with no break time, so you can drop by any time.
Daseon Kalguksu menu and what we ordered

The food menu is varied, and the makgeolli set and soju set combos are packed with value — solid options for anyone looking for a good Gyodae Station restaurant.

We weren't that hungry yet, so we chose carefully. We debated adding boiled pork (suyuk) but went with the pancakes instead.

What we finally ordered:
- Daseon Kalguksu — ₩10,000
- Mixed pancake platter (beef, shrimp, zucchini) — ₩26,000
- Whelk chive salad — ₩20,000
- Chamisul Original soju — ₩5,000
Inside Daseon Kalguksu and the barley rice self-service bar
There's a women's restroom by the stairs on the 1st floor, and upstairs on the 2nd floor there's a men's restroom plus a group space for parties of 25 or more. We sat on the 1st floor.

Before we'd even ordered, they brought out bowls of barley rice for each of us.

The barley rice, mixed with a squeeze of gochujang (red pepper paste), comes with unlimited refills — so if you're a fan, feel free to ask for seconds.

Why is the kimchi at kalguksu places always so good? Both the radish salad and the fresh kimchi were crunchy but not too salty, and the garlic wasn't overpowering — a perfect match for the noodles.
Once the barley rice was mixed up, in comes the Chamisul Original, haha.
Cham Daseon Kalguksu, 10,000 won: broth from eight ingredients

Even if you're there to drink, if you come to a kalguksu place you have to order at least one basic kalguksu, right? Here comes the noodles in rich broth!!

Chewy, springy noodles with absolutely no floury taste.

The broth, simmered every morning from a whopping 8 ingredients including clams, anchovies, and vegetables — wow!! A rich seafood broth that handles drinking and hangover relief at the same time.

Daseon's confident little sign about the broth. It really is that good — I'd want to come back just for the kalguksu alone.
Whelk chive salad, 20,000 won: somyeon noodles come as standard

Right after the kalguksu, the whelk chive salad arrives — and they just throw in wheat noodles as a default?! Is this really only ₩20,000?? Such a generous portion for the price.

Go on, husband, mix it up. Toss the noodles into the whelk salad and the seasoning soaks in beautifully.
Chewy whelk plus slurpy noodles — clink clink clink!!
Sweet, tangy, and spicy all at once, but never overdone. It was genuinely surprising how not-salty it was — I know how hard it is to make a seasoned dish this well-balanced, so it really shows the owner's skilled hand.
Mixed jeon platter, 26,000 won: beef, zucchini and shrimp
The last dish to arrive was the pancake platter — three kinds of jeon (Korean pan-fried pancakes): zucchini jeon, shrimp jeon, and beef jeon. We went back and forth and ended up skipping the boiled pork for this, and it was absolutely the right call.

The thick-cut beef jeon, sliced up generously, dipped in soy sauce and popped in one bite. Even my son, who'd literally just eaten chicken, kept grabbing pieces of this savory beef jeon.

Zucchini jeon is secretly delicious and makes a light drinking snack — I make it at home often, but having someone else cook it for me on a hot day like this? Pure happiness, haha.

The plump shrimp jeon had a springy texture with juicy, savory shrimp flavor bursting through — ordering the pancake platter was definitely the right call.

The savory jeon paired amazingly with the spicy red-seasoned whelk chive salad. Whenever the jeon started feeling a bit heavy, a bite of the chive salad or a sip of the kalguksu broth balanced it out perfectly — the soju just kept going down easy at this Gyodae Station bar.

Why we would go back to Daseon Kalguksu
Add boiled pork (bossam) to all this and you've got the makgeolli set — that one's for a group of four or more next time. And we haven't even tried the octopus kalguksu (kalnakji), a legendary dish for stamina and recovery, with whole octopus in it — another good reason to come back.
One of Daseon's strong points: kimchi, radish salad, and barley rice are all free to grab as much as you want from the self-bar.
From kalguksu to bossam, pancake platters, and stir-fried octopus, this is a Gyodae Station restaurant — and Gyodae Station bar — where the owner's skilled hand really shows in every dish of this Korean pub menu. Next time, I'm coming back for the kalnakji.
