A weekday lunch with parents at Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap in Hamdeok

I was traveling around Jeju with my parents this time and looking for a place where we could eat together. Mackerel ssambap (wrapped mackerel with rice) was a menu I'd never heard of, so it caught my eye and we ended up going. Here's an honest review from our weekday lunch visit.

How far is Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap from Hamdeok Beach?

The restaurant is about a 15-minute walk from Hamdeok Beach — roughly 1km away — which was great since it wasn't far when looking for a place to eat near the beach. There's also free parking right next to the restaurant, so it was convenient to visit by car too.

What is the restaurant like inside?

Walking in, the space was pretty spacious and neatly kept.

There were group tables too, which looked good for families or larger groups like us.

Best of all, you could see the sea right from inside, so we ate with an open ocean view. Since I was there with my parents, I was a bit worried about the atmosphere and cleanliness, but overall it was pleasant and I liked it. Eating with a view of the sea somehow made the food taste even better.

There were three of us, so we ordered mackerel ssambap for two and one galchi guk. Mackerel ssambap is ₩36,000 for two, and galchi guk is ₩17,000.

Tuesday is the regular closing day, but there's no break time, so you can visit anytime during business hours, which was really nice.

What comes with the mackerel ssambap set

Just from the name, I couldn't quite imagine what mackerel ssambap would look like, but it turned out to be aged-kimchi braised mackerel served with wrap vegetables and side dishes. With three kinds of wrap vegetables and various banchan (side dishes) alongside, the table was set quite generously. The main braised mackerel dish also had more volume than expected, so it was a filling meal. The braise had four chunks of mackerel and plenty of aged kimchi underneath. It was more than enough for the three of us to share as a main dish. The side dishes were also served neatly and paired well with rice.

How does the aged-kimchi braised mackerel taste?

The aged kimchi in the braised mackerel was really refreshing and delicious — total rice thief. It wasn't too sour or too salty, just perfectly fermented kimchi that kept me reaching for more.

Wrapping the plump, fresh mackerel flesh in the aged kimchi made for a fantastic combination. There was no fishy taste at all, and the flesh was very firm — my parents enjoyed it too.

Wrapping the deeply seasoned kimchi and mackerel flesh together in a lettuce wrap was a unique treat.

I usually enjoy braised fish dishes, and both my parents and I were very satisfied with this one.

Is the galchi guk (hairtail soup) worth ordering?

The galchi guk we ordered alongside had plenty of vegetables, making the broth very refreshing.

The seasoning was on the mild side, not too strong, so it paired perfectly with the braised mackerel. The hairtail flesh was soft and the broth clean-tasting, leaving a comforting feeling in the stomach.

Is parking available?

There isn't a large dedicated lot, but there's parking space right next to the restaurant, so parking is easy. I was worried about parking being inconvenient since I was with my parents, but I was relieved it was free. Anyone visiting by car shouldn't have any parking stress.

How does the self-serve side dish bar work?

There's a self-serve bar on one side of the restaurant that was really handy during the meal. Beyond the side dishes initially set on the table, you can freely grab more of anything you want. It was convenient to refill my parents' favorite side dishes generously without feeling awkward about asking.

Final verdict: good for a family lunch near Hamdeok?

I was glad both my parents enjoyed the meal I took them to. It was nice to have a filling meal with an ocean view in a spacious, pleasant space. Both the aged-kimchi braised mackerel and the galchi guk had clean, excellent flavors. Above all, the main dishes came in generous portions and with the self-serve bar, everyone left full. The combination of fresh mackerel and refreshing aged kimchi is a flavor I keep thinking about. If you're looking for a hearty Korean meal near Hamdeok Beach, this could be a great choice.
