Suyeong, Busan barbecue restaurant: Geobugi Dongne aged pork neck

In short

Geobugi Dongne (거북이동네) Busan Namcheon Branch is a barbecue restaurant in Suyeong, Busan, where I ate aged pork neck, beef rib meat, and brisket with my family. The self-service bar made it easy to pair the meat with different sides, though there was a wait on the weekend evening I visited and no parking.

I visited Geobugi Dongne (거북이동네) Busan Namcheon Branch with my family on a weekend evening. We had aged pork neck and beef rib meat, then added brisket as well. What I especially liked was being able to take as many side dishes as we wanted from the self-service bar to go with the meat.

Where is it, and is parking available?

The restaurant is on the first floor at 414 Suyeong-ro, Suyeong-gu, Busan, South Korea. The original post lists daily hours as 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM, with last orders at 9:30 PM. Parking is not available.

What were the weekend wait and atmosphere like?

When I visited on a weekend evening, there were already customers waiting. The entrance and interior felt polished, and although the restaurant was fairly spacious, every table was occupied.

How were the pork neck, beef rib meat, and brisket?

We ordered five servings in total of aged pork neck and beef rib meat. As we ate, it felt a little short, so we added brisket too.

The pork is reportedly aged at a low temperature for 14 days. The pork neck I had was clean-tasting with no off smell, and it was juicy, tender, and pleasantly springy.

We grilled the well-marbled beef rib meat until golden on the grill. I liked the way its juices spread with the first bite. The thinly sliced brisket went well with garlic and gosari (bracken fern) on the grill, with a nutty flavor.

What side dishes can you get at the self-service bar?

At the self-service bar, we could freely take wrap vegetables, pickled side dishes, and jangajji (pickled vegetables). Along with lettuce and perilla leaves, there were gat kimchi, aged kimchi, corn, radish wraps, and tuna sauce, so I ate the meat in several different combinations.

I went back several times for the sweet-and-tart gat kimchi and crisp radish wraps. They paired well with the rich meat, while lettuce wraps with tuna sauce tasted different in a good way. The side dishes were reasonably fresh and tasty, and I liked being able to take more of the ones I wanted without hesitation.

How was the makguksu with the meat?

We had makguksu (buckwheat noodles) alongside the meat. The chewy noodles were dressed in a sweet, tangy, and spicy sauce, topped with a boiled egg and roasted seaweed flakes. A bite or two between the rich meat freshened my palate, so I kept alternating between them.

What did you have to finish the meal and for dessert?

After the meat, we finished with doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and sotbap (pot-cooked rice). The doenjang-jjigae had several vegetables and a savory, deep broth.

The ttukbaegi sotbap, served in an earthenware pot, had glossy, sticky grains of rice with ginkgo nuts on top. It was good on its own and also paired well with the meat. I was already full, but I kept reaching for another spoonful.

As we left after the meal, I also had the ice cream provided for dessert. After eating the meat, meal dishes, and dessert, I felt satisfyingly full.

How was it for a family meal out?

At the time I visited, I saw many family groups, from families with children to older diners. Being able to choose side dishes individually at the self-service bar made it good for eating with family, and I thought it could also work for a family gathering or company dinner.

There was a wait on the weekend evening, but I was satisfied to enjoy the pork neck, beef rib meat, and brisket with a variety of side dishes. I also enjoyed the doenjang-jjigae and sotbap, and I would like to stop by again when I am in Namcheon-dong.
