A 200th-day anniversary lunch at this Gongdeok omakase

Hello. This is Dorie ◠ ̫◠ This time my boyfriend and I visited Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro in Gongdeok to mark our 200th day together! Doesn't the name alone put you in a good mood.. let's go eat with a happy heart

This is what the exterior looks like!

Inside, there's a long wooden counter running through, and a sizable speaker too, so the overall vibe was quite cool.

The lunch course opens with kongguksu, herring gimmari, and chawanmushi

The first thing out in the Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro lunch course was kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup)! Nutty and good from the first bite haha. A nice, easy way to start the course without any pressure. A quiet, calm start..

You also get to watch everything being prepared right in front of you. That's part of the fun of omakase ㅎㅅㅎ

Next was herring gimmari (herring rolled in seaweed). Herring really is... genuinely delicious .... it definitely has that distinct herring flavor but with none of the fishy smell, so I ate it very happily. I think I just like herring..

Chawanmushi topped with mullet roe and bonito flakes

And then chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). It came topped with mullet roe and bonito flakes, and that combination was surprisingly great! Best eaten nice and warm.

Sushi course: flounder, wild red seabream, striped jack, and squid

Okay, now the sushi starts!!!

Clear mussel soup served before the sushi course
The first sushi, hirame flounder

Right before the sushi, they also served a clear mussel soup. It's meant to be eaten alongside the sushi, and it was slightly spicy so it was good for cleansing your palate between bites. The first sushi was hirame, flounder. A clean, fitting flavor for the first piece, a nice easygoing start.

Madai wild red seabream sushi

Next was madai, wild red seabream. They explained that farmed ones are usually around 3kg, but a wild 4kg one happened to be caught that day, so they served us the wild one. Oh ho.... it tasted great haha

They were already preparing the next piece right after we finished one.. looking at the photos again makes me want to eat it all over. What they were making was horse mackerel, and there was sea bass too, but I was enjoying it too much to take a photo ㅠㅠ The sea bass came with pickled plum mixed in, so there was a slight tang at the end. Instead of just plain fish piece after piece, having a little twist like this on each one was really nice! Shima-aji, striped jack. I loved the crunchy texture of the jack so much!! Great chew to it.

Squid sushi topped with citrus juice

Then came squid! Served with yuzu-like citrus juice on top — I never knew squid paired so well with tangy citrus juice like that. Seems like a small thing but it's oddly memorable.

And in the middle, miso soup. Nice to sip a little whenever things started feeling rich, and the owner mentioned the broth base was made from snow crab shells. Maybe that's why it had such depth.

Steamed snow crab with uni, tuna akami-zuke, and toro

And then... steamed snow crab meat with uni, uni really is the best .... they said this was the last of the uni for the day and piled it on generously. It was truly a generous, delicious amount ㅋㅋㅋㅋ thank you for going heavy on things like this..

Took a photo together with it too...click..

Next was akami-zuke. Tuna red flesh steeped in soy sauce, and I loved the soft, distinct flavor of tuna red meat. Clean, soft, and just delicious.

And then toro. Toro really is.... the fatty tuna paired with a touch of salt was a surprisingly great combination. Dipping in salt instead of soy sauce is also a great move.

This is the soju we got as a complimentary service hehe

Aburi seared sushi and grilled kinmedai in seaweed wraps

Next was hamachi (amberjack). Lightly seared before serving, and that seared aroma and texture were delicious.. seared sushi really brings out the aroma, and I love that kind of thing haha. And they also lightly seared the surface of isaki (grunt fish). This one also had that distinctive seared aroma that I loved!! Guess having a little char on both was really my thing..

Lightly seared aburi sushi

And then out came grilled kinmedai + crisp roasted seaweed + rice, meant to be wrapped up with rice and kinmedai in the seaweed. But honestly, as good as the kinmedai was, the aroma of that roasted seaweed was seriously incredible. Can seaweed really have this much presence.. if they sold this in Japan I'd genuinely want to go buy some ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Of course the grilled kinmedai itself was also excellent. Nutty kinmedai plus that seaweed aroma is just an unbeatable combination.

Toward the end of the sushi, we got anago, saltwater eel! It had a sweet braised base, and they explained it's steamed once and then cooked Japanese-style on the grill. Maybe that's why the eel was so incredibly tender. Sweet and soft.. so good..

The anniversary touch: a candle in the datemaki and musk melon

And then, out of nowhere, tamagoyaki. A sponge-cake-like dish made of egg, and since it was our 200th day, they topped it with a candle ㅠㅠ Not expecting anything like this and then receiving it just warmed my heart .. • ᴗ •̥ ˳ ˳ My boyfriend and I blew out the candle together and made a proper wish. Beyond the food itself, being looked after like this in the middle of the meal is what really stuck with me. Happy 200 days to us~

Tamagoyaki served with a candle for the 200th-day anniversary

The final dessert was musk melon! But this melon was ripened so perfectly. The sweetness was so high — like, it's just a melon, why is it this delicious..? Genuinely delicious melon .... want to eat it again!!

Is Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro worth it for an anniversary near Gongdeok?

Anyway, at Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro near Gongdeok, we ate thoroughly and happily from start to finish. Looking at the photos of the herring gimmari, shima-aji, uni, and kinmedai especially makes me want them again haha. And because it was our 200th day, they surprised us with a candle on the tamagoyaki, which made it stick with me even more as an anniversary meal! If you're looking for a sushi omakase to visit for an anniversary around Gongdeok or Daeheung, hope this helps ◠‿◠ And that's the end of the Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro review!
