Seodaemun bakery morning bread picks: Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam

There are so many bakeries in Yeonnam-dong, but Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is one that bread lovers have probably heard of at least once. This time, I deliberately visited in the morning. I really think going to a bakery when fresh bread is coming out is the most exciting time!

Yeonnam-dong is full of cafés and good places to eat, but this was a nice place to stop when I wanted to buy a quick bread snack or pick out several kinds to enjoy at home. Mandong Jegwa does not just have one or two signature items; it has many different breads, so once I stepped inside, I found myself wondering what to choose.

A Morning Visit to Mandong Jegwa

I visited in the morning. Personally, I like going to bakeries in the morning because the displayed breads are neatly arranged, and there is something fun about choosing freshly baked bread at the start of the day. Mandong Jegwa had many varieties on display too, so I started looking through them one by one as soon as I entered.

Usually I would quickly pick just a few things I wanted, but there were so many kinds that I ended up examining every bread. Some menu items were new to me and others were familiar, so I thought it would be easy to choose according to your taste. There was a huge variety, including Eongdeongi, Ang Cream, Injeolmi, jalapeño ciabatta, kaya coconut, tortilla, chili sausage, sweet pumpkin ciabatta, bacon ciabatta, Emmental, maple, walnut, mugwort rice-cake bread, squid-ink bread, pretzel, sweet potato, Cheese Mallang, cappuccino, and more.

Some breads gave me a pretty good idea of their flavor just from the name, while others made me curious from the name alone.

So Many Breads, So Much Fun Choosing

The first thing I noticed at Mandong Jegwa was, of course, the huge selection. When I go to a bakery, I love cream-filled and sweet breads, but I also often choose mild yet filling options like ciabatta or sausage bread that can stand in for a meal. So this time too, after looking over the display, I ended up choosing mostly styles I like.

I chose four items this time: Cheese Mallang, the newly released pumpkin ciabatta, tortilla, and chili sausage bread. I wanted to put all sorts of things in my bag, but buying too much makes it hard to finish everything at once, so I focused on the items I especially wanted to try.

What Did Cheese Mallang Taste Like?

First up was the Cheese Mallang I picked. Even the name made me imagine a chewy, soft texture. If you prefer bread that is soft to bite into with a cheesy flavor, rather than dry bread, this is an item worth trying at least once.

With the first bite, I could taste both the bread's texture and the savory saltiness of the cheese, making it a good snack. Cheese bread can sometimes be too rich and become hard to keep eating after a few bites, but I found this one pleasantly mild. It seemed like it would go well with coffee, too, and felt nice to take out one at a time for breakfast or an afternoon snack. I especially thought the cheese flavor would come alive even more if it were warmed slightly, so next time I want to try it heated.

The Newly Released Pumpkin Ciabatta

The item I was most curious about was the new pumpkin ciabatta. I already like ciabatta, so I wondered what it would taste like with pumpkin added. It looked like a mild ciabatta on the outside, but pumpkin's subtle sweetness made it softer and easier to eat than a typical ciabatta.

It still had ciabatta's signature chewy texture, while the gentle pumpkin flavor came through the more I chewed. I also liked that it was not overwhelmingly sweet. I prefer breads that are mild and let the ingredients taste natural rather than very sweet, and this suited that preference well. It would be nice with a cup of coffee in the morning, or as a simple breakfast on a busy day. It was my first time choosing it, but personally, it is something I would pick again on my next visit.

Tortilla and Chili Sausage Bread for a Filling Meal

Tortilla

Next was the tortilla. Whenever I see a tortilla at a bakery, it is one of those items I find myself reaching for. It is easy to eat and lets you enjoy the filling together with the bread, so it can work as a meal too. The tortilla I chose at Mandong Jegwa felt less like a light snack and more like something to have when I wanted to take care of a simple meal.

The filling added to the tortilla's mild flavor, so it felt more substantial than eating bread alone. Since I visited in the morning, I had it at home with coffee, and it seemed like a good item to grab on a busy morning. When buying several kinds of bread to keep at home, adding one of these is especially nice because you can alternate between sweet bread and meal bread.

Chili Sausage Bread

I also chose chili sausage bread, one of my favorite combinations. Bread with sausage is savory and filling, so I tend to seek it out more as a meal replacement than a snack. The spicy chili flavor made the taste feel a little more distinct than an ordinary sausage bread.

The sausage's savory saltiness and the bread's mildness came together, followed by a slight kick of chili heat. I thought it would pair better with soda or another cold drink than coffee. It would suit people like me who want one bread to feel reasonably filling. It would be good eaten right after buying it in the morning, but I think it would also be nice taken home and warmed simply.

I Looked Around at the Other Breads Too

Beyond what I bought, there were so many other breads that caught my eye. There were sweet options such as Eongdeongi, Ang Cream, and Injeolmi, as well as savory choices like jalapeño ciabatta and bacon ciabatta. Kaya coconut sounded like it would have a sweet flavor, while Emmental and walnut seemed good for people who enjoy the ingredients' own flavors. Mugwort rice-cake bread would make anyone who likes mugwort and rice cake curious from the name alone, and there were plenty of choices depending on your taste, including squid ink, pretzel, sweet potato, and cappuccino.

So rather than coming once and looking at only one or two kinds, I think it would be fun to visit with several people, choose the breads each person wants, and share them. It also seemed like a good stop when looking for bread to take home before going to a café in Yeonnam-dong or after exploring cafés.

If You Are Looking for a Yeonnam-dong Bakery

Yeonnam-dong has so many famous cafés and restaurants that it can be hard to decide where to go. Still, if you love bread, I think Mandong Jegwa is a Yeonnam-dong bakery worth stopping by at least once. I visited in the morning, looked around at the many breads, and chose Cheese Mallang, the new pumpkin ciabatta, tortilla, and chili sausage bread. All four had slightly different personalities, which made trying them one by one fun.

There were not only sweet breads, but also meal-like options with ciabatta or sausage, plus breads made with varied ingredients such as cheese, nuts, sweet potato, and mugwort, so the selection was broad. With so many choices, it may be helpful to decide on a few things you want before your first visit, but I actually found it more fun to browse and choose on the spot.

When You Want Bread to Take Away in Hongdae

Yeonnam-dong is close to Hongdae, so it is a nice neighborhood to stop by while on a date or looking for good food around Hongdae. The usual plan of having a meal and going to a café is great, but if you like bread, it is also nice to choose a few things at a bakery to take away. Being able to see and choose many types of bread at once makes it fun even just to look around for bread lovers. I visited in the morning this time, but I want to try other items next time.

I chose four items this time, but next time I would like to try Eongdeongi, Ang Cream, and Injeolmi, whose names made me curious, as well as jalapeño ciabatta and bacon ciabatta. The bakeries that stay with you are not the ones you visit once and finish with, but the ones that make you want to try other menu items next time. Mandong Jegwa had so many breads that I already have more things to choose for another visit. It was fun to look over the breads one by one and make my choices from the morning, and the four things I brought home each had a different charm, making them nice to enjoy one at a time with coffee.
