Eonyang, Ulsan café with a dog-run yard: salt bread and tea at MUG

I was looking for a large, good-vibe café in Ulsan when I found MUG. The first thing that struck me when I arrived wasn't just that it's a pretty café — it was the story behind how this space came to be.

Why is MUG a black building?

This spot in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju, apparently has a painful history — a large wildfire burned down about 10ha of forest here years ago. Rather than hiding those traces, MUG built them right into the space. The building is finished in charred wood that looks scorched black, designed to contrast with the surrounding forest that's slowly turning green again.

Maybe that's why the interior uses so much dark-toned wood — it gives MUG its own weighty, striking atmosphere. Once I knew the story of the fire and the regrowing forest, the interior started to look a little different to me.

True to Ulsan's large-café style, MUG's space is genuinely huge. Indoor seating is roomy, and once you step outside there's a wide area blending into the surrounding nature — no cramped feeling at all. Quite a few people had come with their dogs, and seeing them run around happily in all that space looked so joyful.

People sipping tea at their own pace, dogs playing, trees and forest all around — it has a different charm from a city café. This would suit anyone looking for things to do near Eonyang who wants to combine it with a drive.

The bakery selection was really varied too.

Enough variety that bread lovers would have fun picking, and the salt bread I tried was delicious — nicely baked on the outside, moist inside, great to eat alongside a drink.

Is MUG worth a stop in Eonyang?

Personally, I think MUG isn't a place where just one thing — space, bakery, or drinks — stands out. The overall balance was good.

The striking interior made from dark charred wood, the wide space, and the view of the surrounding greenery coming back to life all work together well, and the bread variety and what I actually tasted — both bakery and drinks — were tasty.

Most of all, the story of turning a place with painful wildfire memories back into somewhere people can rest made MUG feel a little more special.

If you're looking for a large café in Ulsan, or a spot for an Eonyang date or Ulsan drive course, this is worth stopping by. A café I'd want to revisit whenever I want to relax with a cup of tea close to nature and eat some good bread :)

Wandering slowly around the café, the view changed from spot to spot, which made exploring fun in itself. Overall it's spacious and open, so it didn't feel crowded even with a fair number of people around, and the dark wood-tone interior blended well with the natural scenery, making the café itself feel like a striking space.

Anyone looking for a large café in Ulsan should be pretty satisfied with the scale and atmosphere here. I also liked that it's not just a café for pretty photos — it's genuinely comfortable to sit and have a cup of tea. On a nice day you can enjoy the surrounding scenery too, so it fits well into an Eonyang drive course.

With so many bakery options, I spent a while deciding what to try — from easy, no-fuss picks like the salt bread to a range of other desserts, there was something for every taste. Pairing the bakery with tea worked really well together.

And personally, if I come back, I'd order the avocado smoothie again. The soft, nutty flavor unique to avocado came through clearly without an artificially strong sweetness, which made it memorable. Especially recommended if you like the taste of real, natural ingredients!
