This time I visited Oterre Namyeong (오테르 남영) in Namyeong-dong, Yongsan. I got a perm there, and there were a few things I loved from the first consultation through the treatment, so I wanted to share them.

Oterre Namyeong is a hair salon on the 3rd floor of a building on Wonhyo-ro 93-gil in Yongsan, Seoul, near Namyeong Station. If you're looking for a salon around Sookmyung Women's University or Yongsan, it might be worth a look. It was my first visit, so I was curious about the atmosphere too. You go into the building and up to the 3rd floor, and there's the salon.

Inside, it felt a little different from a typical salon. Wood-tone furniture and vintage props come together for a cozy feel. There are plenty of clean, modern salons these days, but I think an interior with this much personality is charming too, haha.

How does the face-shape perm consultation work?

The best part of Oterre Namyeong for me was the consultation before the perm. She didn't just check the style I wanted; she first talked through which design would suit my face shape, and she showed me the curls and feel that might suit me in a drawing, haha.

When you go for a perm, you usually start by describing the style you want, right? But even with the same perm, the mood changes depending on where the curls sit and how much volume there is, so it felt more trustworthy that she took those things into account. Personally, I prefer a designer who builds the design around my face shape and overall vibe rather than pushing whatever's trendy. In that sense, this consultation was really satisfying, haha.

My hair before the treatment and the designer's diagnosis

So this is my hair before the treatment. I hadn't realized it, but another salon had cut the underside super light. It's the thing I hate most, ugh.

Maybe because the designer at Oterre Namyeong has so much experience, when I told her my worries she looked at my hair, diagnosed it, and gave me solutions right on the spot. Kind of like a doctor of hair..?? haha. What impressed me was that she doesn't treat hair as just putting in curls; she designs around your face shape and overall look.

Also, since Oterre Namyeong is a one-designer salon, you can go straight in at your appointment time without waiting, and because she looks after only me through the consultation and the treatment, I felt the result would turn out even better!!

How was the hair damage after the perm?

After the consultation we got on with the perm, and I was glad I could hardly feel any damage afterward. Sometimes after getting your hair done the ends turn dry or feel more tangled than usual, but this time I didn't notice that much.

When you get your hair done, the result matters, but you also worry about how much the process will damage your hair. A perm especially can turn out differently depending on your hair's condition, so I was a bit worried about what my hair would be like afterward. Personally, I was quite happy with this part, haha.

My hairstyle after the perm

After finishing the perm at Oterre Namyeong, my whole hairstyle definitely felt more put together. My hair is semi-curly to begin with and the humidity was high that day, so the frizz was a bit disappointing, though.

I think what matters is not curls that are as strong as possible but a style that suits my face shape and blends naturally overall, and since she designed around my face shape from the first consultation, I liked that. You style your hair every day, so I think it's also important that it's easy to manage.

What to talk about during a perm consultation

If you're thinking about a perm, rather than only showing photos of what you want, it helps to also talk about how you usually style your hair and what kind of mood you're after. However pretty a style is, if it's hard to do every day, you end up not bothering with it.

And I felt once again that a perm isn't just about making curls; the process of finding a style that suits you is what counts. Even with the same style, everyone's face shape and hair condition are different, so it's best to have a thorough consultation first. This time I was satisfied overall from consultation to treatment, and I especially liked that there was almost no damage to my hair.
