Mapo restaurant for a blind date, smoked gyukatsu set: Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant on the basement floor of the Mapo Hanwha Obelisk building near Mapo Station in Seoul. The writer tried the signature smoked gyukatsu set, made with sirloin aged 20 hours, deep-fried, then smoked in an offset smoker, with a choice of three broths for the pot rice. Free underground parking, a spacious well-ventilated dining room, and a calm atmosphere made it a spot that works equally well for solo dining, a blind date, or a family meal.

Today I want to introduce a restaurant near Mapo Station that's been getting a lot of buzz lately. I love gyukatsu and have tried quite a few places, but this one turned out to be one of the most satisfying gyukatsu restaurants I've been to, so I'm writing up a review.

Honestly, gyukatsu places often end up with the smell of meat lingering all through the restaurant, so I was a little worried about that. But this place is spacious with a good ventilation system, so there was none of that at all. The comfortable atmosphere let me eat at ease, which is one of the reasons I'd recommend this as a great restaurant near Mapo Station.

Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch's location and free underground parking

It's located on the basement floor of the Mapo Hanwha Obelisk building — I had no idea a place like this existed even though I've passed by Mapo Station many times. The building itself has a clean, sophisticated feel, so my expectations were already up from the entrance. What I especially loved was being able to use the building's underground parking for free. Parking near Mapo Station is always a headache, so having that solved made visiting really convenient.

An atmosphere that works for solo dining and blind dates alike

The interior is decorated in an upscale style, so it felt less like simply coming to eat and more like being at a nice restaurant. Maybe because of that, I saw people quietly dining alone, couples who looked like they were on dates, and quite a few families too. With this kind of atmosphere, it works perfectly as a solo dining spot near Mapo Station, and it would also be great for a blind date. The lighting was soft and the tables were spaced generously apart, so you could talk comfortably without worrying about the next table over.

The signature smoked gyukatsu set, 20-hour aged sirloin

The decisive reason I became convinced this is a great restaurant near Mapo Station was the signature dish itself, the smoked gyukatsu set.

Gyudo's signature smoked gyukatsu set spread

This dish is made by aging sirloin for 20 hours, deep-frying it, and then smoking it directly in an offset smoker. Even the name sounded unusual, and it turns out this is the signature dish of Gyudo's main branch.

Sirloin gyukatsu smoked in an offset smoker

Not long after ordering, a subtle smoky aroma drifted over as the dish arrived, and the visuals alone were something else. The outside was fried crisp, and a faint smoky scent brushed past your nose — this was a unique charm I hadn't felt at any other gyukatsu restaurant.

Taking a bite, the phrase 'crispy outside, juicy inside' fit perfectly. The batter was crisp without being greasy, and the sirloin inside was tender and full of juice. On top of that, the subtle smoky aroma seemed to bring out the meat's natural flavor even more. The sauce wasn't overpowering either, complementing rather than masking the meat, so I could fully enjoy the ingredients' natural flavor.

Side dishes and a choice of three pot rice broths

The side dishes, soup, and pot rice that came with it were all neatly arranged, making for a really satisfying full meal. The portions weren't small either, so even people with big appetites should be plenty satisfied. With this kind of quality, it made complete sense why this place is getting word-of-mouth buzz as a great restaurant near Mapo Station.

It was fun that you could choose the broth for the pot rice from three options: solomon's seal tea, pork bone broth, or bonito broth. Thanks to this upscale vibe and the care put into the plating, we talked about how this would also be great for a family gathering or family meal. The seating was comfortable and the atmosphere quiet enough that you wouldn't feel uneasy bringing older relatives along, and I actually noticed several tables that looked like families out for a meal.

The menu lineup seemed pretty varied too, with several side dishes and other fried items besides gyukatsu, so I'm already looking forward to trying more on my next visit. Considering the premium ingredients and care that goes into it, I felt the prices were reasonable. It's not cheap, but the taste and service were worth the price.

Wrap-up

To sum up, this place on the basement floor of the Mapo Hanwha Obelisk had it all — free parking, a pleasant dining atmosphere, and the signature smoked gyukatsu set aged 20 hours and finished in an offset smoker. It suits quiet solo meals, nerve-wracking occasions like a blind date, and family gatherings alike, so I think I'll be coming back often.

If you're craving a proper gyukatsu meal near Mapo Station, I'd strongly recommend this place. I'll come back to try other menu items and write another review next time!
