While looking for good places to eat in Yeonnam-dong, I found myself at Ochaya Yeonnam. It's a spot where you can enjoy a variety of Japanese-style rice bowls, and this time I ordered the unagi chazuke rice bowl. If you like eel dishes, this is a menu worth trying at least once — and I especially loved that there's an extra eel option so you can enjoy it even more generously.
Unagi chazuke bowl 16,000 won plus 6,000 won extra eel
What I ordered was the unagi chazuke rice bowl at ₩16,000 with an extra ₩6,000 eel add-on. The base menu already looked plenty satisfying, but I love eel so I added more — and in the end it was a really satisfying choice.

There was a generous amount of well-seasoned eel piled on the rice, so it looked filling just from the sight of it.
Nutritious rice, not white rice: how it works with the shredded egg
One distinctive thing about the unagi chazuke rice bowl at Ochaya Yeonnam is that it comes with nutritious rice (영양밥) instead of regular white rice. Rice bowls can sometimes feel like a simple, quick meal, but here the rice itself was nutty and filling, which made the whole meal more satisfying. With eel and nutritious rice together, it felt like a properly substantial meal.
On top, soft egg strips and seasoned eel are laid out — the colors looked pretty and the combination worked well together. The eel had a subtle sweet-and-savory seasoning and a soft texture that went well with the rice. The plainness of the egg strips tempered the rich flavor of the eel, so overall it wasn't heavy at all.

How much more eel does the add-on actually give you?
Adding extra eel definitely bumped up the portion and made the meal much more satisfying. Eating a piece of eel together with the nutritious rice brought out a great nutty, savory harmony, and each bite felt more filling than the last. If you want more than just a taste of eel and really want to enjoy it generously, I'd recommend the add-on option.

True to its name, unagi chazuke is delicious eaten as a plain rice bowl, but I liked that the way it's served lets you enjoy a variety of flavors. At first I ate it straight as eel and rice, and later switched things up to discover a different kind of charm.

What the eel tastes like at Ochaya Yeonnam
The eel wasn't overly sweet or strongly seasoned — it had a subtle, savory depth. The outside was moist with sauce, while the inside was soft with just the right amount of bounce, giving it a nice chew. The distinctive nutty flavor of eel came through clean, with no fishiness, so it was easy to enjoy whether you're a regular eel eater or trying it for the first time.

Eating the eel together with the warm nutritious rice underneath brought out a great balance between the nuttiness of the rice and the savory-sweet sauce on the eel, with the soft egg strips rounding everything out nicely. With the extra eel especially, I wasn't just getting a taste of one or two pieces — I could enjoy it generously and really savor the flavor of eel all the way to the last bite. The sweet, deep flavor and soft texture of the seasoned eel made for a filling and satisfying meal.
