This is already my third visit to Ilpum... and honestly it's number one among all the Japanese kaisendon I've had in Korea, for real!! It's so good I wish everyone knew about it, so I keep coming back even though it's quite far from my house. Parking is free for up to 2 hours and the lot is fairly spacious, so you can park comfortably and eat even in Magok, where parking fees tend to be pricey.

Do you need a reservation at Ilpum Magok? Window-side table seating

I visited Ilpum Magok via a Naver reservation. There are tables for 2 up to 4 people, and if you book ahead for your party size, they'll hold a table for you, so I'd recommend reserving before you go. The opposite side of the table seats is all floor-to-ceiling window, so it feels open and the view outside is pretty — the atmosphere while eating is lovely too.

It already got famous after appearing on TV, with Lee Young-ja and Hwang Jung-min raving about it, but plenty of other celebrities come here too. So many cool autographs on the wall... a proven good restaurant, indeed.

What we ordered at Ilpum Magok and what it cost

Chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and broth are served before the meal. The plump chawanmushi is completely Japanese-style, melting away in your mouth... honestly nothing here isn't delicious.

I genuinely wondered if this was a visual you could get in Korea — it just makes you gasp. Made with incredibly fresh seafood, and the portion spills over the bowl, so I think it's really good value for the price.

Premium kaisendon, 37,000 won: kelp-aged sashimi on rice

This is the very dish Lee Young-ja praised. Apparently the premium kaisendon ranked #1 in nationwide restaurant search volume in 2024. Underneath is a bed of seasoned rice topped with various types of aged sashimi. Made with kombu-aged sashimi, it's an even more substantial spread than a basic kaisendon, packed with premium seafood. Raw salmon, salmon roe, sea urchin, squid, abalone, spot shrimp, tuna — every piece of sashimi is thick and has great texture, melting away in your mouth.

Wrap it in seaweed, wrap it in gamtae (seasoned seaweed), or just dip it in soy sauce with rice — however you eat it, it's delicious, so I just unconditionally recommend this menu. Do you like Japanese food? Do you like aged sashimi? Don't overthink it, just order the premium kaisendon!!!!

Special ilpumdong, 30,000 won: how it compares to donburi in Japan

Ilpumdong (special) ₩30,000

Honestly, this ilpumdong is my favorite menu here...! I mean, do I even need to explain much — the visual says it all!!!! A rice bowl topped with negitoro (minced tuna), salmon roe, and sea urchin. Mix the wasabi and scallions well into the rice and it's truly ilpum (top-notch), just like the name says. Even a friend who's a bit picky about tuna fell completely in love with this dish and insisted we come back again. I ate something similar in Japan just three weeks ago, and I'm not exaggerating — it's a few thousand won more expensive than in Japan, but the portion is that much bigger. And it's genuinely as good as what I had in Japan.

Seasoned rice + scallions + minced tuna + sea urchin + salmon roe = love, pure fantasy... Even when I'm already full, I keep eating more, it's that good, and the portion is so generous that ₩30,000 doesn't feel like a stretch at all. A place I know I'll want to come back to again as soon as I start forgetting it... actually, I don't think I'll forget it at all.

Cold udon served mid-meal and the receipt-review croquettes

Udon is served partway through the meal. Last time it seemed to be a warm-broth udon, but this time it was cold udon. Refreshing and delicious!

Write a receipt review and get free croquettes! After you pay in advance, you write a review using the receipt they give you, and they hand you 2 pieces of croquette — the filling is so soft it practically spills out. I've never had a croquette quite like this,, it comes oozing out like a sauce... so good.
