Magok Korean BBQ date spot with dry-aged short rib: Nokji Magok
In short
Nokji Magok Main Branch is a beef and lamb grill restaurant on the first floor of Building B, Queens Park Nine, by Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. A couple booked a table for two and ordered the dry-aged raw short rib for two, mentaeran pa bap (pollock roe and scallion rice) and fresh buckwheat mak-guksu noodles, and because they arrived before 3pm the mentaeran pa bap came free. Staff grill the meat from start to finish and the sauces and garnishes cover plenty of combinations, making Nokji Magok an easy recommendation for a Magok date-night Korean BBQ dinner.

After a while, I finally got to revisit Nokji Magok Main Branch, a place I've always loved. With a baby on the way, grilled meat dinners like this feel extra precious these days. Nokji Magok Main Branch sits on the first floor of Building B, Queens Park Nine, and there's parking in the building's basement lot.

Inside Nokji Magok Main Branch: mood and seating
This time my husband and I booked a table for two — groups of four can get table seating too — and the overall vibe was clean and comfortable, making it a nice spot for a date.

The banchan (side dishes) were already set on the table when we arrived: cheongyang chili peppers, aged kimchi, doenjang-seasoned dried radish greens, radish salad, herring roe jeotgal (salted fermented roe), wasabi, and more — a good variety to pair with the meat.

What we ordered, and the free mentaeran pa bap before 3pm
That day we ordered dry-aged raw short rib for two, plus the mentaipa bap (pollock roe rice) — a must-order whenever you come to Nokji. Since we arrived before 3pm, the staff said they'd switch it to a free service item, which made me so happy. That kind of thoughtful touch quietly makes your whole day better.

My husband, as usual, ordered himself a draft beer — Suntory Premium Malt's this time. He still misses how good it tasted when we had it in Japan.

How the dry-aged short rib is grilled for you, with shiitake mushrooms
At Nokji Magok Main Branch, the dry-aged raw short rib is grilled from start to finish by the staff. They showed us how to spice up the special soy sauce with cheongyang chili — I really recommend this. Loading up on the chili adds a sharp kick to the sauce's sweet-salty flavor, and it pairs beautifully with the short rib. Along with the meat, they also grill mushrooms and minari (Korean watercress) for you, one piece at a time.
The dry-aged short rib was thick and had gorgeous color from the start, but honestly, the shiitake mushrooms were the real standout for me... I don't think I've ever had mushrooms grilled this well anywhere else. Soaking up the meat's juices and smoky char, they were incredible.

As they grilled, the staff even used a torch mid-way through to add extra smoky flavor, and they served each piece right when it was ready to eat, which made the whole meal easy and relaxed.

Why Nokji Magok's mentaeran pa bap is worth ordering
While the meat was grilling, the mentaipa bap arrived first. It came topped with three whole pieces of pollock roe, along with seaweed and scallions — a combination that couldn't possibly taste bad just from how it looked.

I mixed the rice well and took a bite with the mushrooms they'd grilled for us earlier, and it was so good...🥹🥹🤍 The salty pollock roe, savory seaweed, and fragrant scallions came together perfectly, and adding the smoky mushrooms made it pair even better with the dry-aged short rib. Personally, this is a dish I'd recommend twice, even three times over.

Sauces and garnishes: salt, egg yolk soy sauce, mashed potato
The meat itself is delicious at Nokji, but part of the fun is mixing and matching all the different sauces and garnishes. First, they gave us a plate of hand-ground salt, and I dipped the first grilled piece into it — meat dipped in salt really is the classic way to go. But every sauce here is so good that you keep wanting to try new combinations.

Dipping the meat into soy sauce mixed with egg yolk adds a sweet-savory note that pairs well with the short rib, but personally, my favorite was the mashed potato.

Eating well-grilled meat together with the soft, savory mashed potato is genuinely delicious. Depending on which garnish you pair it with, the flavor of the meat shifts slightly each time, so it was fun trying out different combinations one by one. My husband kept praising the food the whole meal, which made me a little proud, even though I had nothing to do with the cooking.

Above all, I appreciated that the staff paced the grilling to match how fast we were eating. Serving each piece exactly when it was ready meant we could chat comfortably through the meal.

To finish: fresh buckwheat mak-guksu and corkage-free drinks
We're the kind of couple who always needs dessert after meat. My husband suggested bibim mak-guksu (spicy buckwheat noodles), and there was no way I'd say no. We ordered the fresh buckwheat mak-guksu, and just the visual — piled high with seaweed — already looked amazing.

After mixing the sauce in well, the sweet-and-tangy flavor was the perfect palate cleanser after all that meat. Even though we were about to burst, we kept eating and ended up finishing every last bit between the two of us.
On top of that, Nokji is corkage-free, which is great news for wine lovers. Next time I want to bring a bottle and really enjoy it properly with the meat.

Is Nokji Magok a good Magok date-night Korean BBQ spot?
The parking is convenient and the space is clean, so it's a good pick if you're on a date in Magok, and I'd also recommend it to anyone nearby looking for great beef or lamb rack. Personally, dinner is lovely, but visiting during a quieter lunch hour like we did, to enjoy things at a relaxed pace, is great too.

If you're looking for a place to grill meat in Magok, I recommend giving Nokji Magok Main Branch a try — staff-grilled meat and a range of sauce combinations await! 👏🏻 It suits dates as well as celebrations or group gatherings, so next time I'd love to bring my parents along.
