Yeongtong Station sushi, 30-minute weekday wait: Teukbyeolhan Chobap

Conveyor-belt sushi near Yeongtong Station with Hongchil again after a while. Feeling peckish, I decided to try Teukbyeolhan Chobap. A budget-friendly conveyor-belt sushi spot near Yeongtong Station where you can pick and choose whatever you want for solo dining or a solo drink — that's exactly why it's called "Teukbyeolhan" (special)!

Since I was already out, today's Yeongtong Japanese food special was Teukbyeolhan Chobap.

How long is the wait at 7pm on a weekday?

We got to Teukbyeolhan Chobap in Yeongtong around 7pm on a weekday and — the wait... I figured turnover would be fast and the line would clear quickly, but we ended up waiting over 30 minutes!!!

Do yourself a favor and join the remote waitlist through Catch Table beforehand! (Honestly, I had no idea the wait would be this long.)

Lots of people were waiting outside too. But if it's hot, you can wait inside instead. Finally, we're in!!

When you first walk in, you get a rather "special" greeting.

Dodge seats for solo diners and the rest of the seating

Teukbyeolhan Chobap's Yeongtong branch has these dodge-style seats, so it really feels like you're eating solo. In fact, a lot of people were dining and drinking alone!

There's storage space under the chairs for your belongings, which is a relief. This is actually a pretty important detail.

As you can see, there's only one row of dodge seats and about two tables, so definitely reserve ahead or use the Catch Table remote waitlist. (Better suited for 1–2 people than for a group.)

The menu and how the 1,890-won flat rate works

There's a menu placed at every seat.

They start you off with miso soup.

Every plate coming down the belt is just ₩1,890, so you can eat without worrying about the bill.

The biggest perk: if there's something on the menu that's not on the belt, just ask and they'll make it for you. Especially in the evening, turnover is high so the popular sushi shows up on the belt without you even having to ask.

Picking whatever delicious sushi keeps coming around, exactly as you please — what a huge perk!!

(Of course, you pay for what you eat, so watch your wallet.)

What to order: shrimp tempura, octopus and sea bream sushi

You absolutely have to try this shrimp tempura! Fried to order, crispy outside and juicy inside — a true hand-made tempura.

It has that sukidashi (small side dish) vibe you'd get at a good sashimi restaurant. The tsuyu dipping sauce that comes with it is also great. And this is only ₩1,890...? Cheaper than the store-bought shrimp tempura at a gimbap shop (I could go back just for this one item).

Everything else was solidly average taste-wise. This octopus with the fire-chicken-sauce vibe was also good.

The teriyaki-flavored grilled sea bream sushi had a texture similar to the eel sushi you'd get at a supermarket.

Hongchil's pick was, of course, the egg-shrimp sushi. Our Hongchil loves egg and shrimp so much that this one got an automatic pass.

We ate our fill, ate a lot, and had a great meal — but looking back at these photos now, I want more.

It's nice that there are more and more of these solo sushi spots and light-meal restaurants these days!

Side note: this officetel is actually one Hongsun once considered moving into because the soundproofing is really good. (We went for a first-move-in consultation once...)

What could be better, and the final verdict

If there's one small letdown about Teukbyeolhan Chobap, it's that the rice seasoning leaned more toward vinegar than sweetness, which was a bit disappointing...

Other than that, the seasoning on the other ingredients and the overall composition were good, and the price, location, and friendliness were all very satisfying!
