Ikseon-dong bakery souvenir bread: white bean and maple cream, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeout bakery in the hanok alleys of Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, selling only bread baked that same day. On a first visit to Ikseon-dong, an early stop brought home white sweet bean bread (3,800 won), maple cream cheese bread (4,900 won) and an onion bagel, all packed as a Seoul souvenir. The menu at Munhwa Bakery is short enough to choose from easily, and all three breads were good enough to make the rest of the lineup worth a return trip.

My first Seoul trip in a while!! There's so much to see in Seoul that I'm always agonizing over where to go! Today's destination: Ikseon-dong!! First time here, and it definitely has that tourist-spot feel!

View of the Ikseon-dong hanok alley

Between the hanok alleys there are so many pretty cafés and nice restaurants that it's hard to decide where to go, but I'd already eaten in another neighborhood, so I went looking for a good bakery in Ikseon-dong instead. This trip's Seoul souvenir is bread haha. I love flour so much... I love you, flour.

Inside Munhwa Bakery: the shop and how to order

Munhwa Bakery had a faint, savory bread smell drifting through the air, and the breads on display were easy to take in at a glance, which I loved. It felt like a place focused on making just a few kinds of bread really well. Lots of variety is nice, but a shop where everything is laid out so clearly and easy to choose from is just as great!!

Ikseon-dong itself is a neighborhood full of alleys worth wandering slowly. Munhwa Bakery really fits that atmosphere well. There were more kinds of bread than I expected!! The system is: pick your bread, tell the staff, and they take it out for you — with partitions set up everywhere, which made it feel even cleaner.

There wasn't a huge variety, but every single loaf looked delicious, and I started getting greedy... Narrowing it down to just a few was harder than I expected, ㅜㅜ If I lived nearby, I probably would've grabbed one of each!!

The garlic bread looked like the star of the show — golden and glistening, super appetizing! In the end I picked three kinds today: onion bagel, white red bean bread, and maple cream cheese bread.

Why an early visit to Munhwa Bakery works best

Munhwa Bakery only sells bread baked that same day, and since I visited early, there was still plenty left. It's a popular bakery, so I'd recommend going while there's still a full selection!

If you leave a Naver receipt review, you get a free salt bread — which isn't even sold in the store on its own..!! Now I'm curious about it! A bakery giving away bread as its review reward — how fitting is that~ so nice~~

White sweet bean bread, 3,800 won: how does it taste?

Munhwa Bakery's white red bean bread is ₩3,800. I tend to prefer bread with filling over plain bread, and this one had a nice, mild, soft sweetness to it. Through the fluffy bread I could feel the smooth white red bean paste.

White red bean bread topped with sesame and nuts

The bread had what seemed like nuts mixed in, giving it a bit of texture to chew on. There were sesame seeds in the center too, adding even more of that nutty flavor. It's really packed with paste, so I'd recommend it to anyone who loves red bean-style fillings! Parents especially seem to love this one!

The distinct sweetness of the white red bean paste hits first, and a subtle nuttiness lingers the more you chew — I really enjoyed it. It's not as intensely rich as regular red bean paste, so it's great for people who like paste-filled bread but find some too heavy or too sweet!

I bet this would be even better with a warm Americano! The coffee's bitterness meeting the sweetness of the white red bean paste sounds like a great pairing. It'd also be good for a quick bite on a train — as a paste-filled bread, it doesn't have a strong smell either.

Munhwa Bakery's maple cream cheese bread

Maple cream cheese bread, 4,900 won: a bread that works as dessert

The maple cream cheese bread is ₩4,900. Just the name alone had all my favorite ingredients, so it was the one I was most curious about — and it delivered, with the sweet aroma of maple mingling with the rich, soft flavor of cream cheese. A great pick for dessert!

There's that distinct sweet, fragrant maple flavor, paired with the soft, savory taste of cream cheese — so good!! The cream cheese especially kept the maple sweetness from being overpowering, which I loved even more. Sweet, but with a bit of savory saltiness as you go — the bread itself was moist and soft too.

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel

Onion bagel: for anyone who likes plain, savory bread

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel isn't just a plain bagel — it's an onion bagel! That sounded promising, so I grabbed one. The moment I took a bite, that signature chewy bagel texture came through — I really love this kind of chew in a bagel.

Surface of the onion bagel topped with nuts

Like the other breads, this one had what seemed like nuts on top too, giving the bread itself a savory flavor along with some chew. There were bits of actual onion you could bite into here and there, which added a fresh, clean edge. That said, the onion flavor wasn't overpowering at all — just the right amount.

The plain bagel base combined with the savory depth of onion made for a much richer flavor overall. Since it's not overly sweet, I'd recommend it to anyone who prefers a plain, savory taste. You can see the cream cheese packed generously inside too — this would make a great brunch with coffee~ I left Ikseon-dong's Munhwa Bakery very satisfied — the bread itself was so good that now I'm curious about everything else on the menu~~
