Ikseon-dong bakery en route to Insadong Ssamziegil: Munhwa Bakery
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery at the entrance of Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul, about a five-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. On the way back from the Seoul Museum of Art, I stopped by with my mom and packed up 2 garlic breads, 2 coffee breads and 1 black sesame bread, and the moist garlic bread and the coffee bread filled with coffee-scented cream were the standouts. Munhwa Bakery is worth building into a walking route from the museum on to Ssamziegil in Insadong.

Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong: a bakery stop on the way back from the museum
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery within a 5-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station, right at the entrance of the Ikseon-dong hanok street. We were heading to Insadong after the Seoul Museum of Art, so we swung by this Insadong-area favorite, Munhwa Bakery :)

This is a bakery I always stop by whenever I'm in Insadong! Because a bread-lover like me simply can't walk past it ☺️

Munhwa Bakery's hanok-style exterior in the Donhwamun-ro alley
The exterior itself has that hanok feel — full of Ikseon-dong alley vibes. Since it's right at the entrance of the Ikseon-dong hanok street, the storefront itself is a photo spot 👍 The hanok-style sign goes perfectly with the Donhwamun-ro alley scenery.

Snap a photo of the bakery first 📷 then head inside!
Takeout only, with just 2 groups inside Munhwa Bakery at a time
Munhwa Bakery's space is small, so only 2 parties can enter at once! (It's takeout-only.)

The moment you walk in, that nutty bread smell hits you — holy moly 🫢😍❤️ Yeah, that's what opens my wallet haha.

The menu isn't huge, but every single item looks delicious. I also love that they follow a made-and-sold-same-day rule, so you know it's fresh ☺️
The staff kindly cut each piece for us!
What I ordered: 2 garlic breads, 2 coffee breads, 1 black sesame bread
At Munhwa Bakery we picked 2 garlic breads, 2 coffee breads, and 1 black sesame bread. Given the price, they're pretty big — almost too much for one person to finish alone, a good size for two or three people to share.

The walking route: Seoul Museum of Art to Munhwa Bakery to Insadong Ssamziegil
Since it's takeout-only, we packed everything up and headed home ❤️ After leaving the bakery, we strolled toward Insadong's Ssamziegil, letting the food settle while chatting with mom along the way — a really nice route for that. Museum → Munhwa Bakery → Insadong Ssamziegil — I genuinely recommend this course ❤️ And the garlic bread + coffee bread + americano combo, personally, I really recommend that too.
How was the garlic bread at Munhwa Bakery?
Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread isn't so much crispy-outside-soft-inside as it is moist all the way through. The garlic flavor comes through strong alongside a sweetness, so it's that sweet-and-savory combo that keeps you reaching for more.
How was Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread?
The coffee bread's smell alone is insane. It practically announces 'I'm coffee bread~'. Fluffy castella with a cream that's gently infused with coffee flavor, melting in your mouth — coffee lovers will absolutely love this haha.
Black sesame bread, judged by my mom
The black sesame bread went straight into mom's mouth before I could even take a photo haha, so no picture of that one lol. You can tell how good it must have been, right? When I asked how it tasted, she said it was chewy like tteok (rice cake) with a nutty black sesame flavor. The black sesame cream was 👍 too.

Next visit to Munhwa Bakery: garlic bread and coffee bread again
I keep thinking I'll try other breads next time lolllll but whenever I go it's always garlic bread and coffee bread. Plus whatever else looks good haha. Familiar flavors are just too powerful!
A great course for strolling through the Ikseon-dong hanok street while snacking on bread. There are plenty of cafés nearby too, so it's nice to take your bread and enjoy it at a café 👍 If you head over toward Jongno 3-4 ga, there are lots of good restaurants, so you can even turn it into a full meal outing! Don't stop at just the bakery — I recommend enjoying the whole Ikseon-dong alley.
If you ever find yourself near Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, I think it's worth stopping by Munhwa Bakery. I love that they follow a made-and-sold-same-day rule, and I heard leftover bread gets donated to neighbors in need, so it's a place that's good for the taste buds and warms the heart too 👍 Definitely try the garlic bread and coffee bread.
