Hongdae bar with giraffe statue and fireworks live stream: Kkoko Land

Here's my review of Kkoko Land Barbecue, newly opened in Hongdae. The wide-open feel of the outdoor seating combined with menu items packed full of charcoal aroma made for a really special time.

Kkoko Land is an outdoor grill bar spread across the 1st and 2nd floors on Wausan-ro 19-gil near Sangsu Station. Walking up the lit staircase felt like stepping into a secret resort hidden in the middle of the city. Even at the entrance, you could tell the interior had been designed with every guest's footsteps in mind.

The moment I stepped into Kkoko Land, the cool breeze and the wide-open space felt like they were blowing away all of daily life's stress. It gave off a comfort like being out in nature.

The day I visited happened to be the Yeouido fireworks festival, and Kkoko Land smartly live-streamed the fireworks on a giant screen. Watching the fireworks burst gorgeously next to the eye-catching giant giraffe statue, sitting comfortably in the outdoor seating, I didn't envy the crowds at Hangang Park one bit — it was the best spot in town. I imagine visiting on a day with a sports match or a special event would double the fun.

Welcome non-alcoholic cocktail and QR ordering at Kkoko Land

As soon as we ordered food, a welcome non-alcoholic cocktail, sweet and crispy chicken-leg-shaped crackers, and cold water were served by default for each guest — that thoughtful touch impressed me all over again.

Ordering is done by scanning the QR code at the table.

That day we ordered Kkoko Land's signature dishes: Seogyo-dong kalbaengi (골뱅이, whelk with noodles) and charcoal-grilled chicken neck (salted). Ordering was easy with the QR code on the table.

What comes on the charcoal-grilled chicken neck (salted) platter

Our main dishes were set on the table. The neatly arranged charcoal-grilled chicken neck platter on a large stainless tray and the mountain of Seogyo-dong kalbaengi were so impressive I let out an audible gasp. The chicken neck platter came generously stocked not just with well-grilled meat but tortillas to wrap it in, a crisp shredded cabbage salad, jalapeños for a bit of spice, and Kkoko Land's own special sauces.

The chicken neck, deeply infused with charcoal aroma, was moist and tender — really satisfying.

Wrapping it in the tortilla with the crunchy cabbage salad and spicy jalapeños let us enjoy a variety of flavors, which was even better.

Seogyo-dong kalbaengi: how the whelk salad balances the barbecue

Seogyo-dong kalbaengi comes with chewy whelk, crisp shredded scallions, vegetables, and springy flat kalguksu noodles all tossed in a spicy-sweet special sauce. One big bite and the savory kick really woke up my appetite. It was the perfect choice to balance out the rich, savory barbecue — highly recommend this dish.

Great side dishes call for a cold drink. Gulping down a cold beer, I felt like all the stress built up from daily life washed away. A cold drink in the cool outdoor seating is pure bliss, honestly.

Are the restrooms clean at an outdoor bar like Kkoko Land?

Beyond the great food and the atmospheric space, one thing I really want to praise is how clean the place was and how kind the staff were. Outdoor bars usually have uncomfortable restrooms, but Kkoko Land's restrooms were, true to what I heard about the owner putting real effort in, as posh and spotless as a department store's — it kept the whole visit really pleasant. Even fully booked and busy, the staff greeted us with bright smiles the whole time.

A place where you can enjoy the cool breeze in Hongdae's open-air seating, catch a special event on the giant screen, and taste the deep flavor of carefully made charcoal barbecue. If you want to enjoy perfect healing and great food at the same time in the middle of the city, I genuinely recommend visiting Kkoko Land!
