Introducing a real Mapo Station find this time — a raw beef sashimi spot where the soju just goes down smooth. Usijang Hoegwan, where the meat quality is on another level.

Usijang Hoegwan, honestly, in three lines 1. A real raw beef sashimi place 2. The kkuritsal platter is the best 3. The soup broth calls for soju

Finding Usijang Hoegwan near Mapo Station

Exterior of Usijang Hoegwan on the Dohwa-dong shopping street

A beef restaurant near Mapo Station that's more than just a neighborhood favorite. Get your hangover cured with soup, then keep drinking with raw beef sashimi — an endless loop of good drinking. (The drink fridge even has soju slush.) Usijang Hoegwan, on the Dohwa-dong shopping street near Exit 3 of Mapo Station, looks like a real find from the outside.

Inside Usijang Hoegwan: full house on a Sunday evening

Interior of Usijang Hoegwan

It was so crowded inside that I didn't take photos. If it's fully packed even on a Sunday evening, that confirms it's a real neighborhood favorite. There were a decent number of tables — some people grilling meat, some eating raw beef sashimi, and some doing both. Overhearing the table next to us saying "this place is good, really good" only raised my expectations.

Ordering is done via the tableside kiosk. We came here for raw beef sashimi and soju 😋 It's nice that they have set menus — you can grill meat and eat yukhoe (raw beef) at the same time.

Menu guide for kkuritsal raw beef sashimi

Kkuritsal raw beef sashimi from pristine Gangwon-do cows. Kkuritsal is said to be the top-grade cut of raw beef sashimi, yielding only 2kg per cow. What we chose: Usijang Hoegwan's signature soju pairing — the perilla-leaf raw beef sashimi platter and clam beef soup.

As expected, a real find has good water too. Just the place to make you drink smoothly — my kind of water spot.

Kimchi worthy of a hangover-soup restaurant. The kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) are excellent 👍

Perilla-leaf raw beef sashimi platter, ₩55,000. The owner kindly explained the menu — all the different flavors to wrap in perilla leaf.

The owner wrapped one bite for us and explained how to eat it. One bite in and — wow, insane!!!! Genuinely so delicious, beyond expectations. Such a surprising flavor.

Straight to a drink. The soju just goes down smoothly. So delicious, so smooth.

The yukhoe was tasty too, but the kkuritsal was on a whole other level. You really have to try it. The flavor of the melchit (fermented anchovy sauce) and the aroma of sesame oil blend with various ingredients' flavors and textures, mingling constantly with kkuritsal's savory, meaty aroma and juiciness. The harmony changes with every chew, and it's delicious every time — and it keeps calling for more soju 😋

Why the clam beef soup works as a soju side dish

Clam beef soup, ₩14,000. At first I was curious what this even was — it felt like a bit of a hybrid dish — but after trying it, it's also great as a soju side. Loaded with clams, it's got that deep, savory flavor almost like odeng-tang (fish cake soup). But it also has the taste of beef soup, making it a strange, wonderful soup that calls for a drink.

Clam beef soup

The soup comes with rice already mixed in, and there are way more clams than I expected. I'd rather eat this as a straight-up stew for drinking than as a rice soup. Even after the broth cools, you keep eating it — a soup for drinking. Kept warm throughout, it'd go down even smoother 😋

Soup broth with soju

Straight to ordering another bottle of soju. Colder than at your average bar — this place is a soju spot too.

Additional order of raw beef sashimi
Raw beef sashimi compared with kkuritsal

Ordered extra raw beef sashimi too. I was curious how it compared to the kkuritsal, so I added a serving. It's delicious. But the kkuritsal is still better — you really do get what you pay for. The raw beef sashimi is tasty, but that kkuritsal wrapped in perilla leaf is so, so, so much more delicious.

Is Usijang Hoegwan worth it? Final verdict

Overall verdict on Usijang Hoegwan's raw beef sashimi

A raw beef sashimi spot near Mapo Station with meat quality that sets it apart from other beef restaurants: Usijang Hoegwan. You must try the perilla-leaf raw beef sashimi platter — genuinely better than expected. An explosion of savory flavor, a perfect soju side. It's both a hangover-soup spot and a raw beef sashimi spot, so you can cure your hangover while continuing to drink. A perfectly, happily tipsy experience — everything about Usijang Hoegwan was perfect.
