Hoegi burger restaurant with hash burgers: 1986 Shibuya Burger

Craving handmade burgers in Hoegi, I went to 1986 Shibuya Burger (1986시부야버거) for dinner with my younger sister. Curious about options different from the franchise burgers we usually eat, we chose two hash burger sets and a cheese side.

How far is it from Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University?

The restaurant is on the first floor at 5 Gyeongheedae-ro 1ga-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It is near Kyung Hee University and Kyung Hee University Hospital; it took me about five minutes to walk from the Kyung Hee University entrance. It is also about a 10-minute walk from Hoegi Station.

What are the atmosphere and seating like?

The interior had a relaxed atmosphere for a meal. With several two- and four-person tables, it felt fairly spacious, and the Japanese-style interior also caught my eye.

What did we order, and how much was it?

We ordered at a kiosk. The best-menu guide made it easier to choose, and there was also a Naver receipt-review event at the time of my visit.

We were both hungry, so we ordered two burger sets plus a side. Here is what we ordered and the prices I recorded that day.

• Shibuya Golden Hash Burger set: I recorded it at ₩14,400. We added a hash brown and chose fries and Zero Pepsi.
• Double Mozza Hash Burger set: We chose sweet potato fries and Zero Cider, and it was ₩17,900.
• Whole Mozzarella Cheese Bar: ₩3,000.
• The total order came to ₩35,300.

What was at the self-service bar?

While waiting for the food, I looked around the self-service bar. There were twice-fried potato chips, and they were tasty enough to feel like a separately ordered side, so I kept reaching for them before the burgers arrived.

There were also disposable gloves, candy, barley tea, a refresh kit, mango jelly, and dental floss. In particular, there were seven sauces, all free to use, so it was nice to pair the fried items with different sauces.

How were the set sides and Whole Mozzarella Cheese Bar?

Once the two burger sets and side arrived, the table was generously filled. There were also different zero-calorie drinks, so we could each choose one.

Among the sides, I especially liked the sweet potato fries. They were well fried, and I liked them with the garlic sauce from the self-service bar. The fries had a familiar taste, and switching between sauces kept them from becoming tiring.

The Whole Mozzarella Cheese Bar was crisp outside and filled with mozzarella cheese. The cheese stretched long when I cut it, and it went well alongside the burgers.

How did the Double Mozza Hash and Golden Hash differ?

Is the Double Mozza Hash a good choice for a substantial burger?

The Double Mozza Hash Burger had two patties, mozzarella, and hash. It was taller than a typical burger and felt packed with filling.

Without vegetables, the patties and mozzarella cheese took center stage, with the crisp texture of the hash added in. It was a menu item I would choose on a day when I wanted a hearty meat-and-cheese flavor.

What does the tomato-filled Shibuya Golden Hash taste like?

The Shibuya Golden Hash Burger had crisp hash, sauce, tomato, and a patty. We added one more hash brown.

It was generously filled with layers of patty, cheese, and vegetables. Because the bun was not too thick, I could taste the nutty, salty flavors of the patty and cheese clearly, while the tomato worked well with the slightly sweet-spicy sauce.

This time, the two burgers were clearly different, which made choosing between them enjoyable. I remembered the Double Mozza Hash for its substantial meat-and-cheese flavor and the Golden Hash for its combination of tomato and sauce. Next time, I would like to try another burger.
