No-wait weekday evening visit for patented perilla makguksu: Sokcho

In short

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant near Sokcho Beach serving deulmemak, its patented perilla oil buckwheat noodles. Visiting on a weekday evening to dodge the lunchtime wait, the writer and a friend ordered two deulmemak, a single-serving suyuk (boiled pork), and pollack salad — a perfect amount for two. Between the nutty perilla aroma, the deep dongchimi (radish water kimchi), and the pollack salad, it's a great stop on a Sokcho trip.

My friend and I stopped by Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch, a famous Sokcho makguksu restaurant, during our Gangwon-do trip!

Where to park?

Sokcho Beach public parking lot with Sokchoai statue in view

You can use Sokcho Beach Public Parking Lots 1, 2, 3! They give you 2 hours free parking. I could see Sokchoai (the local mascot statue) right from the parking lot — this place is right in front of Sokcho Beach, so it's a perfect stop while sightseeing 👍🏻

The weekday evening atmosphere

Wall covered in celebrity signatures next to the table seating

I saw reviews mentioning waits even on weekdays during lunch, so I went on a weekday evening instead! 🌚 There's a separate waiting area inside, and about 15 tables.

There were celebrity signatures on the wall — even the mukbang YouTuber Hiiboo had been here.

The menu

Menu board listing makguksu, suyuk, and potato pancake

There's a wide variety of makguksu on the menu, plus suyuk (boiled pork), potato pancake, acorn jelly, mandu (dumplings), jeonbyeong (crepe rolls), and more! They also had liquor and drinks sold specifically in Gangwon-do, which really gave it that travel feeling~ ~

They're also running a receipt review event.

And since it's corkage-free, it seemed like a great spot for groups! 🍷

What makes deulmemak different

In-store sign explaining the deulmemak trademark registration

Apparently Sokcho Topgol's deulmemak is Korea's first makguksu to get a trademark registered with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. So you can only get this deulmemak in Sokcho haha

Whole buckwheat grain roaster and grinder inside the restaurant

Inside the restaurant, there's also a grain roaster and grinder for roasting whole buckwheat in-house.

You can also buy buckwheat cookies and noodles separately!

Self-serve side dish bar and microwave

There's a separate self-serve bar, so refilling side dishes was easy haha. Nice touch having a microwave specifically for baby food too~! 👍🏻

Basic side dishes and dongchimi

The basic side dishes were radish salad, yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), ssamjang, and salted shrimp!

Dongchimi served alongside the basic side dishes

And they also bring dongchimi (radish water kimchi), and this dongchimi's savoriness was genuinely insane,,ㅠㅠ A deep flavor properly extracted from the ingredients,,,(JMT — really tasty) ⭐️⭐️⭐️

What we ordered for two

Full spread of two deulmemak, suyuk, and pollack salad

Since I visited with a friend, we ordered: ✔️2 deulmemak ✔️1 order of suyuk (single serving) ✔️pollack salad The portion was just right for two~~

Perilla oil buckwheat makguksu with aroma rising from the bowl

Perilla oil buckwheat makguksu

First, we tried the deulmemak, and the moment it arrived, the nutty perilla oil aroma was unreal !!! 👃🏻

One bite and the rich, nutty perilla oil scent hits you right away,, blending naturally with the clean, nutty flavor of the buckwheat — it was soooo good ㅠ_ㅠ 💗💗💗 And the subtle perilla leaf aroma on top was the perfect kicker,,,

Single-serving suyuk topped with dried radish strips and pollack salad

Suyuk (boiled pork)

We also tried the clean-tasting suyuk, which came with dried radish strips and pollack salad on the side — wrapping them together made for the perfect combo!!

A bite combining suyuk and deulmemak together

Wrapped up like this, it's ridiculously delicious,,, the suyuk and deulmemak were a genuinely perfect match.

Friend's combo of rice topped with a piece of suyuk

My friend said this is the way to eat it lol and added a bowl of rice, topping it with a piece of suyuk, and ate it happily~~

A plate of the extra pollack salad ordered

Pollack salad

I'd heard so much about how good the pollack salad is here that I ordered it as an extra separately lol. Chewy yet sweet-and-sour with the seasoning — it's mouthwatering 💦

Pollack salad paired with the makguksu

It's great with suyuk, but it also pairs wonderfully with the nutty perilla oil buckwheat makguksu, so try it with both!!
