Korean beef near Sungshin Women's University on a low day
Honestly, I wasn't feeling great that day. Work had not gone well, my heart felt heavy all the way home, and even choosing somewhere for dinner felt like a chore. Still, I thought that on a day like this, I needed to eat proper meat, so I looked for Korean beef near Sungshin Women's University Station and ended up at Yukilgwan Sungshin Women's University Branch (육일관 성신여대점). To give away the ending: I felt completely different walking out than I had walking in.

What kind of place is Yukilgwan Sungshin Women's University Branch?
Yukilgwan is a Korean beef specialist that advertises its commitment to the very best meat from start to finish. It occupies the third and fourth floors of a building just a short walk from Sungshin Women's University Station, and the Yukilgwan sign at the first-floor entrance makes it easy to find. The menu says it serves only carefully selected 1++ Korean beef, while a notice saying it was chosen as a Seoul-certified restaurant and celebrity autographs hang by the register.
With deep navy walls, marble tables, and seats divided by white shutter partitions, the interior felt more like a wine bar than a typical barbecue restaurant. A framed chart of beef cuts on one wall gave me something to study while waiting. As the sign says, it has fully equipped VIP rooms and charcoal-brazier grilling: meat is cooked over charcoal on an individual brazier. There are separate private rooms farther inside too, which seemed well suited to anyone wanting a quiet place to eat.

The kindest service I have ever encountered
To talk about this place, I have to start with the owner and staff. I honestly had never been to a place where the owner and staff were this kind. As soon as I sat down, they opened the menu themselves and explained the drinks, slipping jokes into the conversation so naturally that I found myself laughing.
Even while grilling the meat, they explained each cut and its doneness one by one. Before I had even finished the meat, the heaviness I came in with had lifted. When looking for good restaurants near Sungshin Women's University, there are many places where the food is good but the service disappoints; this was the opposite—a place I would want to revisit for the service alone.
Steamed egg and complimentary scallops before the meal
Once seated, steamed egg comes first. It arrives softly steamed in a small bowl, gently seasoned and comforting before the meat. Then banchan (Korean side dishes), including seasoned cucumber, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), macaroni salad, and pickled chili peppers, are set out in brass bowls, along with wasabi and Maldon salt.
Then complimentary scallops arrived. They grilled them golden on the brazier and placed them on the plate; lightly charred outside and tender inside, they made me want a drink just on their own.

Trying 1++ Korean beef sirloin over charcoal
The main event was Korean beef sirloin. It arrived on a black stone board with a nameplate engraved “sirloin,” and its evenly spread marbling looked different even at a glance. Onion, cherry tomatoes, shishito peppers, and king oyster mushrooms stamped with the Yukilgwan brand came alongside it. The owner placed it directly over the glowing charcoal, quickly seared the outside, cut it into bite-size pieces, and grilled the vegetables to just the right point before arranging everything on one plate.

With a light dip in Maldon salt, the sirloin released its juices, and its rich, nutty flavor grew with every chew. The words “they could proudly call this the best Korean beef in Seoul” came out on their own. Wasabi cut through the richness, while grilled onion added sweetness, so I never tired of it.

Finishing with doenjang-jjigae and plum tea
After finishing the meat, I wanted rice, so I added doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew). It came bubbling in an earthenware pot with generous zucchini, tofu, and onion. It was savory rather than aggressive, and mixing a few pieces of meat into a bowl of rice made it the perfect finish. At the end of the meal, they served plum tea in a glass; it was tart rather than overly sweet and left my mouth feeling refreshed.
For drinks, there was soju at ₩6,000, beer at ₩6,000, highballs at ₩8,000, and house wine from ₩8,000 a glass. There was also a ₩39,000 malt whisky shot tour, traditional liquors such as Hwayo and Ilpum Jinro, and a premium wine list, so choosing something to pair with the meat was part of the fun.

Who I would recommend it to
I recommend it to couples looking for a beef dinner date near Sungshin Women's University, anyone taking their parents out for a quiet Korean beef meal, and people who want attentive service as well. The private rooms seemed ideal for department gatherings or guest entertaining by Sungshin Women's University professors, and they would also work nicely for small company dinners or formal family meetings.
I visited on a bad day and walked out smiling, so I think this will remain one of my most memorable restaurants near Sungshin Women's University for a long time. It is a place many celebrities visit.
