Euljiro 1-ga tteokbokki restaurant, medium-spice combo: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school make-it-at-your-table tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant in an alley one minute from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3 in Jung-gu, Seoul, with an L-shaped hall that feels like an outdoor street-food tent. Two of us ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set at medium spice and got wheat rice cake tteokbokki, assorted fried snacks, chewy sundae (blood sausage), mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), fish cake broth and Coolpis, with the medium level landing slightly milder than Shin Ramyun. Hyeonseoni-ne closes every Saturday and Sunday, so this tteokbokki-and-beer course only works on a weekday after work.

Today I escaped my stuffy room again, chasing a jolt strong enough to wake up my taste buds. Trendy restaurants are great, but sometimes you just crave a hip little rebellion — tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) so spicy it makes your head throb, chased with a cold beer. 💨
This is a place that conquered Seoul with pure spice back in its Yongsan food-cart days, and has now become a beloved stress-release spot for office workers in City Hall and Euljiro. This is my real review of demolishing a spicy instant tteokbokki-and-fritter combo at Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, hidden in an alley near Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station with street-tent vibes. ✨
Where is Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, and when is it open?
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is on the 1st floor of 112 Namdaemun-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, a 1-minute walk from Exit 3 of Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station. It's hidden in the alley right next to Mega Coffee. Hours are Monday–Friday 10:30–21:00, closed every Saturday and Sunday.
💡 Regular's tip: there's a separate 'Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Branch' about a 2-minute walk away that sells the flat rice cake version of tteokbokki. If you want the full bubbling-pot instant tteokbokki experience, make sure you check the sign for [Cheonggye Instant Branch] before you walk in!

I heard there's a wait even after work hours, so I hurried down the alley!

Kiosk ordering and the L-shaped, street-tent-style hall
✨ A space filled with music, the kind of street-tent vibe only insiders know about. At Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, you order at the kiosk by the entrance, then step inside to find — quite a contrast from the exterior — a fairly spacious, trendy L-shaped hall.
Under soft, hip lighting, great songs play in the background and the vibe is next level. It feels like enjoying a stylish street-cart pojangmacha (food tent) right in the middle of the city, and thanks to that cozy, nostalgic atmosphere, my excitement was already building before the tteokbokki even started boiling.

It really does have that street-tent feel, so this season this space is basically perfect haha.
How spicy is the medium Hyeonseoni Combo Set compared to Shin Ramyun?
🌶️ When two of us come to Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, there's zero need to agonize over the menu. There's the 'Hyeonseoni Combo Set' — a full spread of instant tteokbokki, fried snacks, sundae (Korean blood sausage), gimbap (seaweed rice roll), fish cake and even Coolpis, basically the snack-food equivalent of a gift set.
As a professional blogger, I picked the owner's recommended 'medium' spice level to enjoy it properly. (Even medium is a bit sharper than Shin Ramyun, so spice-wimps beware!) For me it was actually milder than Shin Ramyun! I'd recommend it to anyone who just likes regular spicy tteokbokki!

Wheat rice cake tteokbokki, assorted fried snacks and chewy sundae
Tteokbokki: comes out generously loaded with the classic base of wheat rice cake and fish cake. Between the soft, chewy rice cakes, that deep, delinquent spicy-sweet classic sauce flavor soaks in, and the umami just explodes.
Assorted fried snacks & chewy sundae: the crispiness of the freshly fried squid, kimmari (seaweed-wrapped glass noodle roll) and vegetables is art. The batter isn't thick and stays clean, so dunking it deep in the tteokbokki broth gives you that crispy-outside, juicy-inside perfection! >_< And the sundae, chewy with no off smell, dipped in the spicy broth — I couldn't stop eating it.
Mini gimbap and fish cake broth to reset the heat
Mini gimbap & fish cake broth: the bite-sized, savory handmade mini gimbap works as the best palate cleanser for the spice of the broth. Just as the tteokbokki reduces down and your mouth starts feeling a little parched, one sip of the hot, deep fish cake broth included in the combo hits the reset button completely.
Finish it off with a cold Coolpis or a glass of draft beer to fully settle your spice-hit mouth, and you'll understand with your whole body why this place is considered one of Seoul's top three tteokbokki spots.

What to know before a tteokbokki-and-beer night at Hyeonseoni-ne
- Vibe: a lively, hip hangout perfect for office workers unwinding after work with tteok-maek (tteokbokki plus beer).
- Taste: sweet up front with a sharp, spicy kick at the finish — a textbook case of addictive heat.
- Secret Tip: since it's closed on weekends, this is strictly a weekday privilege for office workers. The combo set is so generous that even two big eaters will be stuffed, so I'd recommend wearing your stretchiest pants!
Once you've eaten your fill, a walk along the Cheonggyecheon stream path right out front is the perfect way to digest. If your routine day needs a hit of heat and healing, don't hesitate — head to [Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch] in Euljiro tonight. You'll absolutely end up clinking glasses. Everyone, don't overthink it tonight —

Choosing tteokbokki for dinner was a choice I did not regret!! It's genuinely that good~!!! Next time I'll come back for the instant tteokbokki again at Hyeonseoni-ne haha.

My friend and I left with zero regrets when it was all over. The reason: we ate that much haha.
