Kid's pick at Ikseon-dong bakery: squid ink milk bread & coffee bread

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeaway-only bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, about 200m from Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station Exit 7. On an outing with her kid, the writer let the child choose squid ink milk cream bread, coffee bread, and walnut bread, asking staff to slice the coffee bread for easy sharing. The coffee bread's gentle coffee aroma and sweet cream made it obvious why it's Munhwa Bakery's signature.

Out on an Ikseon-dong outing with my kid, how could we skip Munhwa Bakery, one of the famous bakeries in Ikseon-dong?! It's one of the stops on Seoul's bakery pilgrimage course, so let's go check out Munhwa Bakery!

Munhwa Bakery's location and hours

Munhwa Bakery, one of the well-known bakeries in Ikseon-dong, is a stop on Seoul's bakery pilgrimage course that specializes purely in takeaway!! The vibe was quiet and lovely — so good! Because the interior is small, only two groups can enter at a time, so my kid and I waited outside.

Waiting to enter in front of Munhwa Bakery

I can't wait to eat the bread already!

Munhwa Bakery on a quiet Ikseon-dong alley

It's called one of Jongno's representative bakery-pilgrimage bakeries! Since it's a takeaway-only shop, you can't eat inside the store — packing to go is the only option!!

The breads we found in the shop

Finally inside Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong. We browsed around wondering which bread to eat, which ones looked the cutest! *_*

  • Onion bagel / rice chestnut bread / rice cheese bread / maple cream cheese bread
  • Sweet potato bread / white bean paste bread / walnut bread
  • Coffee bread / garlic bread

So much fun looking at all the different breads! *_*

The three breads we chose together

I also grabbed the coffee bread my kid recommended. My kid said she wanted the squid ink milk cream bread. And we finished off the order with walnut bread!! She kept gushing over how pretty the white bean paste bread was, haha — it's really shaped like a flower, so pretty!!

Munhwa Bakery's signatures are the onion bagel / coffee bread / garlic bread. Since coffee bread was among what my kid picked, we decided to enjoy it properly!

A basket full of mouthwatering bread

The tray was packed with so many mouthwatering breads that it was fun just to look! *_* Since Munhwa Bakery bakes and sells everything the same day, that's exactly why it tastes even better! Once it sells out, it's gone, so it feels precious to actually find bread still there!

Packing up chosen bread at the Munhwa Bakery counter

Munhwa Bakery, picked as a stop on Seoul's bakery pilgrimage course! We packed up our chosen breads!!!

My kid says outings to one of Seoul's top three bakeries are so much fun! She really picked well at Munhwa Bakery!

And we also enjoyed pudding at the pudding shop next door!

How did the squid ink milk bread, coffee bread and walnut bread taste?

The squid ink milk cream bread got devoured happily. The soft squid ink bread was filled with sweet condensed milk cream! How could it not be delicious!! My kid was totally smitten with the squid ink milk cream bread.

Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread sliced open

I asked them to slice the coffee bread, and it made eating so clean and easy! The gently spreading coffee aroma, the sweet cream, and the soft, pillowy bread!!! The way it all comes together made it clear why coffee bread is the signature. This is where the real deliciousness is! It pairs great with iced Americano, and it's an absolutely fantastic match with a latte too! This is definitely a coffee bread I'll be buying again next time I visit Munhwa Bakery!! *_*

Munhwa Bakery's walnut bread covered in walnuts

We polished off the walnut bread too, happily! The walnut bread has crunchy, sweet walnuts stuck on the outside, and it's packed with walnuts inside as well, so the nutty flavor was doubled!!

It's not called one of Seoul's top three bakeries for nothing! If you're doing an Ikseon-dong date outing, this bakery-pilgrimage stop is unmissable! Hope you'll stop by Munhwa Bakery.
