During my trip to Yangyang, I stopped by Cafe Dunchi (카페 둔치), a floating café on the Namdaecheon River. I initially went for a cup of coffee, but it became a chance to take a break as I looked out at the river from the window and rode a boat with my child.
How close is the Namdaecheon River from the café?
Cafe Dunchi is at 295 Ilchul-ro in Yangyang-eup. Since it sits on the Namdaecheon River, the ripples were right outside the window, and distant mountains and sky came into view when I turned my head. On a Yangyang trip meant for the sea, I could take my time looking at the river scenery.
What was the coffee like by the window?
I sat by the window, drank coffee, and looked out at the Namdaecheon River. It was a comfortable break during the trip. The beans are said to come from a Gangneung roastery, and the coffee I had was clean-tasting. They also sell handmade desserts.
What scenery can you see in different seasons?
I enjoyed the Namdaecheon River when I visited, but I was also curious about its scenery in other seasons. I heard that there are cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and reeds and eulalia grass in autumn. In winter, you can also see snow-covered mountains and a frozen river.
What was the boat ride with my child like?
After having coffee, I took a boat ride with my child. The electric motorboat moved at a slow speed, so I felt less concerned about riding with my child. My child also enjoyed moving slowly across the river. The Namdaecheon River looked different up close to the water than it did from inside the café.
I heard that, if you are lucky, you may see salmon or hwang-eo (yellow sea fish) leaping above the water in the Namdaecheon River. I did not see any on this visit, but simply spending time looking at the river closely with my child stayed with me.
My child also enjoyed trying to steer the boat.
Can you take a walk along with a café visit?
The café is next to Namdaecheon Salmon Ecology Park, and there is also a reed walking trail. This time, I had coffee, took a walk, and went boating to enjoy the Namdaecheon River up close. It stayed in my memory as a place to take a break with my child during a Yangyang trip, and I would like to return on my next trip.
