In short
Noju (노주) is a small Western-style course restaurant on the 2nd floor of a back-alley building near Exit 2 of Mangwon Station in Mapo, Seoul. The 38,000-won chef's choice lunch at Noju ran six courses, from bread to walnut ice cream, and the bright, sunlit room with floor-to-ceiling windows and the anchovy and breadcrumb chitarra pasta stood out most. Does the word "course meal" make you feel a bit of pressure right away? The price, and the atmosphere that seems way too formal... I've always felt that way too. Unless it's a special occasion, I never really reached for a course menu.

But while looking for a good place to eat in Mangwon this time, one spot caught my eye: Noju (NOJU), a small 2nd-floor restaurant with a ₩38,000 lunch course.

How do you get to Noju in Mangwon?
Noju is about 145 m from Exit 2 of Mangwon Station, on the 2nd floor of a building tucked into a back alley. A black standing sign sits in front of the gray staircase beside the building, and if you follow the stairs up to the 2nd floor, you're at Noju. It isn't on the main street, so you might get a little lost the first time. There's no big sign on the 1st floor, so if you miss the standing sign it's easy to walk right past.

What is the atmosphere like inside Noju?
Even though it's on the 2nd floor of an alley, Noju was much brighter than I expected, with sunlight pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The moment I opened the door, this was the biggest surprise for me. White plates were neatly set on every table, and with black leather chairs and wooden tables, the mood was calm but not intimidating.

What comes in Noju's 38,000-won chef's choice lunch?
What I ordered this time was Noju's chef's choice lunch, priced at ₩38,000. Here's what comes in it.
- Bread – yuzu ricotta, focaccia
- Welcome dish – beet, endive
- Black tiger shrimp
- Anchovy, breadcrumb and chitarra pasta
- Pork tenderloin with jalapeño
- Walnut ice cream

Noju drink and wine pairing prices
Drinks at Noju are ₩3,000 for daily tea and ₩5,000 for an Americano. There's also a wine pairing, ₩30,000 for 2 glasses or ₩55,000 for 3 glasses, and they had Heineken draft beer and non-alcoholic drinks too.

As the dishes came out one by one, I really felt the lineup was generous for the price.

Bread and welcome dish: yuzu ricotta, beet tart and endive
The first course of Noju's lunch was bread with yuzu ricotta. Piling generous ricotta onto the airy, open-crumbed bread brought up a subtle yuzu fragrance, and it put me in a good mood right from the start.

The welcome dish came as two bite-sized pieces: a small tart piled high with red beet, and an endive leaf topped with a filling.

The crunch of the endive really woke up my appetite.

Black tiger shrimp course
Next was a whole grilled black tiger shrimp. It had real presence just by looks, and a light squeeze of lemon made the springy texture even better.

Anchovy chitarra pasta: the reason to come to Mangwon for pasta
Honestly, the star of Noju's lunch was the anchovy and breadcrumb chitarra pasta. If you're looking for a good pasta place in Mangwon, I think this one dish is reason enough to go.

It's chitarra pasta topped with anchovy and breadcrumbs: the golden toasted breadcrumbs crunch, and the salty umami of the anchovy coats the noodles evenly. It came in a clear glass bowl, so the photos turned out really pretty too.

Pork tenderloin main and walnut ice cream dessert
The main at Noju's lunch was pork tenderloin. It came with grilled endive on a blue floral plate, and the cut was moist and tender.

It came with jalapeño, so I could enjoy it without it feeling heavy to the very end.

Dessert was walnut ice cream. The nutty flavor was rich, and it felt like a clean finish to the course.

À la carte orders, group bookings and window seats at Noju
I heard that after 8 p.m., Noju lets you order the course dishes à la carte. Just note that for à la carte, ordering a half bottle or a full bottle of wine is required. For group gatherings, wine clubs or corkage questions, they say you can ask the restaurant directly.
And I especially recommend sitting at the window seats. You can see the red brick building and stairs across the way, and you really feel the alley charm of Mangwon.

Is Noju a good first course meal if fine dining feels intimidating?
Noju lets you enjoy a 6-course meal from bread to dessert for ₩38,000. The mood of the 2nd-floor window seats and the umami of the anchovy pasta stayed with me most. For anyone who wants to try a course meal without pressure, I think it's a good-value fine dining option, well worth recommending among Mangwon restaurants. It would also suit a lunch date or a quiet meal with someone special.
