Sunday evening 20-minute wait at Mangwon Market Japanese spot Padong

In short

Padong is a Japanese restaurant in a basement space just off the main street of Mangwon Market in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving at 6:30 pm on a Sunday meant a 20-minute wait, and because Padong takes orders while you are still in line, the futomaki, two steak rice bowls and cold soba landed on the table as soon as we sat down. The portions, the flavours and the shelves of character figures were good enough that we are going back for the mazesoba and basil soba.

Cover image of the visit to Padong, a Japanese restaurant in Mangwon-dong

Looking for a good place to eat dinner in Mangwon with my mentor teachers, one of them mentioned a delicious Japanese restaurant near Mangwon Market. 📍Here's my honest review of Padong.

Where is Padong? Right by the main street of Mangwon Market

Padong, a Japanese restaurant in Mangwon-dong, sits really close to the main street of Mangwon Market ☺️ It's a perfect route for a date — browse the market before or after your meal 💗 The restaurant itself has a cozy structure, down about half a flight of stairs from the building entrance.

How long is the wait at Padong on a Sunday at 6:30 pm?

We arrived around 6:30 on a Sunday evening and there was quite a wait 🫢 — clearly a word-of-mouth favorite in Mangwon-dong! But since it's more a Japanese restaurant than an izakaya, turnover was pretty good and we got in after just 20 minutes 😌

Beside the entrance there was a cute little wooden bench for waiting customers 😄

Wooden bench and character doll beside Padong's entrance

A cute character doll and a blackboard listing recommended menu items sat nearby — the teacher I went with said the recommended items change daily 💁🏻‍♀️

Inside Padong: small basement room filled with character figures

Padong's interior filled with tables for two

Inside, Padong is fairly compact with about 7 tables for two. It's cozy with a great vibe, making it a perfect date spot in Mangwon-dong 😘

Open kitchen at the center of Padong's dining room

The kitchen is an open layout right in the center of the restaurant, fully visible from the inside 👨🏻‍🍳 Watching the cooking happen right in front of you gives a sense of hygiene and confidence in both the taste and cleanliness.

Character figures displayed on shelves at Padong
Padong's interior decorated with Japanese-style props

Padong was full of cute little props scattered throughout the space 😆 On the shelves were figures ranging from Pokémon to Anpanman, Minions, and even Ghibli characters.

If you love characters, this is an emotionally satisfying space that'll have your eyes darting everywhere 🤍 Thanks to this charming interior, it felt like a little trip to Japan 🇯🇵

There's also a clean restroom inside the restaurant, which was convenient to use before, during, or after the meal 🚻

Padong menu, prices and the pre-order system while you wait

Looking at the menu, all the classic Japanese restaurant favorites were there 🤩

Padong's menu board with signature dish prices

For reference, the signature futomaki (thick sushi roll) can be packed for takeout, so keep that in mind if you want to enjoy it at home! We ordered futomaki, two steak rice bowls, and cold soba ✌🏻

Padong's signature dishes

  • Futomaki ₩16,000
  • Mazesoba ₩12,000
  • Basil soba ₩13,000
  • Kimchi cheese nabe ₩15,000
  • Steak rice bowl ₩13,000
  • Tuna rice bowl ₩15,000
  • Salmon rice bowl ₩15,000
  • Cold soba ₩13,000
  • Shrimp tempura udon ₩12,000

The most impressive part was that a staff member took our order in advance while we were waiting, so the dishes could come out right as we sat down ✅ Thanks to that, we barely waited at all once we were seated 👏🏻

Side dishes at Padong and how the food looks when it arrives

Pickled peppers and danmuji served as banchan at Padong
Warm bowl of miso soup at Padong
Padong's banchan presented in clean dishware

The banchan (side dishes) included pickled peppers and danmuji (pickled radish) to cut the richness, plus a warm bowl of miso soup 😊 I loved how it was all presented in clean dishware 🍴

Full order served on the table at Padong

Soon our whole order was served, and the moment it hit the table, everyone gasped at how mouthwatering it looked 👏🏻 Neat presentation but generously piled bowls — the visuals passed with flying colors 🤤

Steak rice bowl, 13,000 won: beef covering the whole bowl

Padong's steak rice bowl piled high with meat

These days, ordering a steak rice bowl elsewhere often gets you just a token few slices of meat, but Padong's steak rice bowl genuinely didn't skimp on ingredients 😘 A juicy steak, grilled over open flame until golden brown, filled the entire bowl 🥩 On top were scallions, wasabi, julienned ginger, and a fresh egg yolk 😋

A spoonful of steak rice bowl mixed with burst egg yolk

Popping the yolk and mixing it with the meat, wasabi, and scallions over rice released a savory, nutty flavor that filled my whole mouth.

Futomaki, 16,000 won: one piece fills the plate

Padong's futomaki filling the entire plate
Cross-section of futomaki with fried shrimp and raw tuna

The futomaki was massive — a single piece was big enough to fill the plate, so it fills your mouth in one bite 😝 Inside were two crispy fried shrimp, raw tuna, egg, danmuji, and plenty of cucumber.

A piece of futomaki holding together despite its size

The rice layer was appropriately thin, and the fillings were firm and packed in tightly, so despite its size it didn't fall apart and was easy to eat cleanly ☺️

Cold soba, 13,000 won: whole shrimp tempura and a generous noodle portion

Padong's cold soba topped with a whole fried shrimp
Chilled cold soba broth with grated radish and seaweed flakes

Since I'm on a diet, I went for the light cold soba 🙄 A whole fried shrimp, big enough to look like a side dish on its own, sat on top 🍤 The broth was chilled with floating ice shards, topped with grated radish, wasabi, scallions, and dried seaweed flakes‼️

Chewy buckwheat noodles lifted with chopsticks

Gently mixing in the wasabi and lifting the noodles, the portion of chewy buckwheat noodles was seriously generous 🫣 If you're visiting with a group, ordering a variety of dishes to share would be a great way to go ❤️

Who Padong suits best

Next visit to Padong: mazesoba and basil soba

Padong's table after finishing the meal

There are countless Japanese restaurants in Mangwon-dong, but this was one of the most satisfying I've visited recently in terms of portion size, taste, and atmosphere all together ☘️ Next time, I'm definitely coming back to try the signature Mangwon mazesoba and basil soba that I missed this round 💗
