Seongsu omurice spot, noon wait under 10 min & parasols: Seongsu Darak

In short

Seongsu Darak is a Western restaurant on the 2nd and 3rd floors of an old three-story house in the back alley behind the Musinsa Megastore in Seongsu, Seoul. The writer arrived around 11:50am on a weekday, ordered ahead from the waiting chairs, was seated in under 10 minutes, and had the Darak Omurice, Spicy Crab Risotto, Darak Ade and Seongsu Ade. Thanks to the signature Darak Omurice and the thoughtful touch of parasols set out for waiting guests, Seongsu Darak is a place the writer definitely wants to revisit.

Where is Seongsu Darak and when is it open?

Seongsu Darak (성수다락) is a Western restaurant at 20 Ttukseom-ro 9-gil, 2nd floor, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, in the back alley behind the Musinsa Megastore, a 10-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 3. It is open Mon–Fri 11:30–21:15 and Sat–Sun 11:00–21:15, with last order at 20:30.

Seongsu again! When I think of where I want to go in Seoul these days, nothing comes to mind except Seongsu. I just love it so much!

I had Seongsu Darak saved on my must-visit Seongsu list because I fell for the photo of its plump, fluffy omurice (omelet rice), and I've finally made it. It sits in the back alley behind the Musinsa Megastore, a 10-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 3!

Exterior of the three-story house with a café on the first floor, home to Seongsu Darak

It's a three-story house with a Compose Coffee on the first floor, and Seongsu Darak takes up the 2nd and 3rd floors. The big windows look so open and airy. (I wanted to sit at that window seat too... 🥲) I personally love this kind of Seongsu mood, where an old house is left as it was instead of being torn down.

Where is the entrance to Seongsu Darak? The picture frame is the door

The entrance to Seongsu Darak is a picture-frame-shaped door at the front of the building. It's not the white door or the brown door; a sign says you open the frame and go in.

But wait, where's the door? The white one on the left? The wardrobe-looking one on the right??

I pulled the brown door and it wouldn't open. Is it that white door?

Where is it? While I was looking around, a sign caught my eye saying the entrance is the picture frame.

This is the entrance?! Haha, so much fun. My excitement was already bubbling over before we even went in. We opened the frame door and carefully climbed the dark, narrow stairs.

How long was the weekday lunch wait at Seongsu Darak?

I arrived at Seongsu Darak around 11:50am on a weekday. The seats filled up right before us so we waited; I expected 20–30 minutes but was seated in under 10. There are only 3 waiting chairs in front of the 2nd-floor counter, so anyone after that has to stand in a single line on the narrow stairs.

The seats filled up right in front of us, so we waited in the chairs set up in front of the 2nd-floor counter. There are 3 waiting chairs, and everyone after that had to wait in a single line on the narrow stairs. It's inconvenient, but somehow fun, haha. The line shrank faster than I expected.

While waiting, I could look at the menu and order in advance. We ordered the Darak Omurice, Spicy Crab Risotto, Seongsu Ade and Darak Ade. Everything looked so good that I agonized for ages, but I figured it was best to try the signatures, so I picked from those. 🙂

The atmosphere on the 2nd and 3rd floors

The 2nd floor of Seongsu Darak has a bright, airy white-toned feel. The kitchen and counter are on one side, and tables line the windows. The 3rd floor is bigger, with more tables and a woody, comfortable vibe. I expected a 20–30 minute wait but was seated in under 10. On the 2nd floor, the waiting people are right in front of the tables, so it felt like tables turn over quickly, haha.

Not long after we sat down, the drinks were ready, and since we had ordered ahead, the food came out fast too. 👍

The Darak Ade (pineapple) and Seongsu Ade (lemon) at Seongsu Darak are ₩6,900 each. When you add the navy syrup served separately, the clear sparkling water turns purple.

The pineapple cup is so cute. 😊 When I added the separately served navy syrup, the clear sparkling water turned purple.

So pretty! One sip of the sweet-tart ade wiped away the heat and fatigue all at once. ☺️

The owner's notes on the napkins and menu

The napkin had a message that showed the owner's warm heart: "Thank you for waiting. We're busy cooking your food deliciously." The menu had said, "Could we ask you to order one main dish per person? Thank you for your understanding." One main per person is only natural, but unlike places that say rather firmly, "One menu per person is our rule," I'd never seen a restaurant phrase it as a request like this. The owner must be a kind soul. 😊

How do the Darak Omurice and Spicy Crab Risotto taste?

The Spicy Crab Risotto is ₩19,000, and Seongsu Darak's number-one signature, the Darak Omurice, is ₩17,000. The staff serve the omurice and cut the egg in half at your table.

Next came the Spicy Crab Risotto. They say to mix it well, but it's so pretty, how can I bring myself to mix it~ 🥲

Darak Omurice, the signature dish of Seongsu Darak

Seongsu Darak's number-one signature, the Darak Omurice. Watching the plump, fluffy egg get sliced in half and spread open is pure art.

The staff slice it open as they serve it and walk off. This feeling seems familiar... 🤔 Oh, I remember! It's like those tape-ball cutting videos that were all the rage last year! Haha. So satisfying. 👍

Doesn't it look so delicious?!

Spicy Crab Risotto: a spicy, thick cream

I pushed the crab legs to the side, mixed in the yolk and took a bite. True to its name, the spicy, thick cream clung to my mouth. The rice was cooked soft and tender, just right for Korean tastes.

Darak Omurice: fried rice under an egg blanket

The fried rice was hidden under the egg blanket. A slightly spicy base, mild pork, soft egg and a tangy sauce came together beautifully. There's a reason it became the signature. 👍

Pickles at Seongsu Darak received on request

At Seongsu Darak, pickles aren't served by default; they bring them if you ask. I can't go without pickles, haha. A simple salad to cleanse the palate would be nice too. 🙂

Stairs up to the 3rd floor of Seongsu Darak

Next time I'll climb these stairs and eat on the 3rd floor. Let's be there right at opening!

Waiting line at Seongsu Darak seen on the way out after the meal

The long line and parasols for waiting guests at Seongsu Darak

When I left after eating, waiting guests filled the stairs and stood outside the door, and many were foreign visitors. Staff had set out parasols outside for guests waiting under the blazing sun.

After a delicious, filling meal, I got up and headed out, and the stairs were packed with people waiting 😱 and more were waiting outside the door. If we had come a little later, we'd have waited ages. Not just Koreans but foreigners of all nationalities were waiting. It felt like I'd come to a popular restaurant abroad, haha.

And there was one more touching moment. When we left, a staff member was moving the umbrella stand outside, and I assumed they put it out because it was crowded inside... but no. They were setting out parasols for the people waiting under the hot sun! 😲 I could feel how sincerely they treat their guests. There's a reason popular places do well. 👍👍 Saved as a place I'm definitely coming back to. 📝
