Sindorim jokbal restaurant with free parking for parents: The Jokbal

In short

The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch is a hotel-style jokbal (Korean braised pig's trotter) restaurant on the first floor of the Sindorim 3-cha Prugio apartment shops in Guro, Seoul, midway between Sindorim and Guro stations. On a weekday evening, four of us including my parents ordered the 47,000-won front leg jokbal and a small buckwheat noodle platter, plus a review-event spicy soft tofu stew and a taster of cold jokbal, and the soybean paste soup, radish kimchi and seasoned chives drew praise before the jokbal did. With up to 2.5 hours of free parking in the basement, The Jokbal suits both a family meal and a Guro work dinner.

Know what stresses me out most about taking my parents out to eat? Not the menu.

Whether it'll suit their taste.

This time, the words "the side dishes are really homemade-tasting" came out before the jokbal (braised pig's trotter) even arrived. Curious what kind of place could do that? Let me tell you about The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch in Guro, Seoul.

Where The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch is and how to get there

The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch sits on the 1st floor of the Sindorim 3-cha Prugio Apartment complex, 619-3 Gyeongin-ro, Guro-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It's exactly halfway between Sindorim Station and Guro Station.

It's 754m — about a 13-minute walk — from Exit 1 of Sindorim Station. From Guro Station Exit 3 it's about a 10-minute walk, so it works fine as a Guro Station restaurant too. If you take the bus from Sindorim Station, it's just one stop and you'll get off right in front. It's 156m from the Sindorim Ramada Hotel, so that's an easy landmark to aim for.

The sign is big and right on the main street, so you can't really miss it.

Parking at The Jokbal: 2.5 hours free in the basement

So we drove. You can use the parking lot on basement level 1, and up to 2.5 hours is free — plenty of time even with a jokbal meal and a few drinks.

One thing to remember: you have to get a parking ticket when you pay. If you forget and just walk out, you'll get charged for parking, so mention it at the register first.

The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch opening hours

Monday to Saturday it's open 11:00–22:30, and Sunday 11:00–21:30. There's a weekday break time from 15:00 to 16:00, but no break on weekends or holidays.

Takeout and delivery run until 22:45. Since they boil the jokbal fresh in-store every day, timing can shift slightly. Local currency vouchers and Zero Pay are accepted too.

Was there a wait on a weekday evening?

We came as a family of four on a weekday evening. The place was nearly full, but luckily one table was open and we got seated right away.

The dining hall of The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch full of weekday evening customers

This is a spot that gets waits even on weekdays, so we got lucky. Some reviews mention 15–20 minute waits on weekend evenings. Waits are handled in order, so if you're going as a family or group on a weekend, it's worth calling ahead.

Inside The Jokbal: atmosphere and private room seating

Once inside, the restaurant is bigger than you'd expect.

Spacious interior with wood-toned tables

Wood-toned tables with generous spacing between them. There's also a separate room, so it's comfortable to bring parents. It seats around 20 and they'll push tables together for larger groups.

Table layout used for group seating

Maybe that's why the table next to us was a group of coworkers. It seems to work well both for family dinners and as a Guro work dinner spot.

You order through a tablet at the table. It shows photos of the menu items, which made it easy for my parents to follow too.

On one wall there's a sign on "how to eat jokbal deliciously," suggesting you try a piece without sauce first. That let us taste the jokbal's own seasoning before anything else.

What kind of restaurant is The Jokbal?

I'd checked out the store's intro before going, and it turns out this is the country's first hotel-style jokbal specialist. The jokbal was reinterpreted by a chef from the Westin Chosun Hotel. They say they've kept the same recipe for 14 years, since 2012.

Their ingredient principles are strict too: only Korean grade-1 raw trotters, following a "three same-day" rule — slaughtered, boiled, and served all on the same day. They boil it every day in a cauldron with 15 ingredients.

All the side dishes are made in-house too, including the radish kimchi, which they ferment themselves. So it wasn't for nothing that my parents praised the homemade taste of the side dishes.

The Jokbal as a lunch spot in Sindorim

It's easy to think of this only as a dinner jokbal spot, but The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch has a separate weekday lunch menu.

Sign for the weekday lunch menu including bossam set

There are proper meal options like bossam set, pork wrap rice, spicy soft tofu stew, and Korean beef rice soup. The bossam set is around ₩11,000, making it a solid option for office workers looking for a Sindorim lunch spot. It also felt fine for solo dining.

Review-event dishes and takeout perks at The Jokbal

There are three things worth knowing before you order.

Sign for the receipt review event and takeout perks

First, the receipt review event. Write a receipt review and you get a free spicy soft tofu stew or a small buckwheat noodle platter. We chose the spicy soft tofu stew.

Second, add their KakaoTalk channel. Adding The Jokbal's channel on KakaoTalk gets you a free drink or one bottle of alcohol!

Third, takeout perks — order takeout and get ₩2,000 off plus a free drink.

What four of us ordered at The Jokbal

  • Front leg jokbal x1
  • Buckwheat noodle platter, small x1
  • Spicy soft tofu stew (free, review event)
  • Sample cold jokbal (free)
  • Steamed rice
  • Makgeolli

They also had non-alcoholic Cass for the designated driver, so everyone could still cheers together.

The soybean paste soup that settled our stomachs

Once seated, the soybean paste soup arrives first. A soybean paste soup at a jokbal restaurant felt a little unexpected, but one spoonful in, it's savory and mild, gentle on an empty stomach. It felt like it settled our appetite before the jokbal came.

My parents said this soup was delicious right off the bat, too.

The Jokbal's basic spread and side dishes

Along with the soup, the side dishes come out in a row — lettuce, perilla leaves, and napa cabbage for wraps, plus cheongyang chili peppers, garlic, and onion.

Then there's salted shrimp, ssamjang (dipping paste), chive salad, and radish kimchi.

There are a lot of side dishes, and none of them felt like an afterthought. The radish kimchi in particular is homemade and fermented in-house — sweet and refreshing.

The chive salad has a tangy dressing that cuts through the jokbal's fattiness. The napa cabbage is crisp and sweet, perfect for wraps. Tasting these side dishes is exactly what made my parents say the food tasted homemade.

How was the 47,000-won front leg jokbal?

Finally, the front leg jokbal arrived.

It came piled high on a brass tray, glistening with shine.

As instructed on the wall, I tried a piece without sauce first. It's really tender and chewy. The seasoning is mild but present, so it's plenty tasty even plain.

A piece of jokbal showing its springy skin

The skin is springy, and the meat isn't dry — it's moist with every bite. Maybe because it's slow-boiled in a cauldron, there's no gamey smell at all, just a faint herbal aroma lingering. Then

Jokbal dipped in salted shrimp and topped with radish kimchi

I dipped it lightly in salted shrimp and topped it with radish kimchi. The crisp, tangy flavor cleanly cuts through the jokbal's savoriness.

Perilla leaf wrap with jokbal, garlic and chive salad

I'd also recommend wrapping jokbal, garlic, and chive salad together in a perilla leaf. A sip of makgeolli with a bite of jokbal — that combo was the best.

Honestly, that day I found myself thinking, "I want to come back to Sindorim just for this jokbal."

The taster of cold jokbal served on the house

This is the sample cold jokbal we got from the review event.

Sample cold jokbal served for free

Being a sample, it was only 3–4 pieces, but the tangy, spicy sauce mixed with the jokbal really wakes up your appetite.

A piece of cold jokbal mixed with tangy sauce

Alternating between it and the regular jokbal, we never got bored. Cold jokbal is usually something you'd have to order separately, so it was a nice surprise to get a sample. I'd consider ordering it as a main next time.

Is the small buckwheat noodle platter (9,000 won) enough for four?

We ordered the small buckwheat noodle platter. The noodles are chewy and piled with vegetables. It's sweet and tangy, but not overly seasoned.

Sometimes jokbal restaurants make their noodles so heavily seasoned that you only take a couple of bites and give up. This place wasn't like that. Wrapping a piece of jokbal in the noodles, the flavors work together instead of one overpowering the other.

Since it was the small size, it only came out to a couple bites each for four people. If you love the noodles, I'd suggest going with the large size.

Review-event dish: spicy soft tofu stew

Lastly, the spicy soft tofu stew we got from the review event. We ordered rice to go with it. It's packed with soft tofu — they clearly didn't skimp just because it was free.

The broth is pleasantly spicy rather than intensely hot, so my parents ate it comfortably too. A spoonful of rice mixed in cleared away the richness from the jokbal. If you're deciding what to pick for the review event, I'd recommend the spicy soft tofu stew.

Final verdict on The Jokbal in Sindorim

Like I said at the start, my parents praised the side dishes before anything else. Soybean paste soup, radish kimchi, chive salad, front leg jokbal, buckwheat noodles, soft tofu stew —

— not a single dish felt lacking in homemade care. You could really taste that everything is made in-house.

It was a bit of a downside that it's more than a 10-minute walk from the station, but if you drive, the 2.5 hours of free parking makes it easy — just remember to grab your parking ticket. With a spacious dining room and even a private room, it's a solid recommendation for both family dinners and a Guro work dinner spot.

Next time I'm thinking of getting it as takeout to enjoy at home — since takeout gets you ₩2,000 off plus a free drink. If you're craving jokbal around Sindorim, give The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch a try.
