A great-value bread spot in Ikseon-dong

With the weather finally cooling down for fall, I went out for a walk around Ikseon-dong. There's a place known as one of Seoul's top three bakeries, one people line up for — so I went to check it out. It's also known as a popular stop on bread-pilgrimage routes.
Where Munhwa Bakery is and when it opens
Munhwa Bakery is located at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7 toward Changdeokgung. It's open Mon–Sun 11:00–20:00, and there's no parking.

Is there a wait at 2pm on a weekday?
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery. The inside is very small, so only about 2 groups can enter at a time. Visiting around 2pm on a weekday, I was able to walk right in with no wait.

There were about 16 kinds of bread.

At first glance the prices looked a bit high, but the breads turned out to be quite large.

Coffee bread, opened first on the street
Garlic bread and coffee bread seem to be Munhwa Bakery's most famous items. I bought garlic bread, coffee bread, and an onion bagel.
Apparently eating bread on the street is trending these days? So I tried it myself right after buying (honestly, I was just hungry haha 😂).
So fluffy and soft, with a subtle coffee aroma that reminded me of milk.

Onion bagel packed with onion cream cheese
I'm not usually a big bread person since it's rarely good value, but there's one bread I always buy despite the price — scallion cream cheese bagel. Munhwa Bakery had an onion bagel version, so I gave it a try.

Its heft and huge size caught my eye first. The outside is crisp yet chewy, and inside it's generously packed with sweet, salty onion cream cheese. Given how big it is, it'd work great as a meal replacement with a cup of coffee.

Garlic bread, the one I most wanted to try
The garlic bread was the one I was most looking forward to, and the first bite delivered that moist texture right away. The garlic sauce was worked generously through the baguette, so it stayed flavorful all the way to the last bite.

The moment I cut into it, I understood why it's so famous.

It's not overly sweet or sharp, so it's easy to keep eating without getting tired of it. Very moist and soft, with the garlic flavor coming through clearly. Since the bread is fairly large, it was too much for me to finish in one sitting — so let me share a storage tip.
How to store and reheat Munhwa Bakery bread
- Same-day eating: it's softest and most moist eaten the day you buy it.
- Freezing: portion out any leftover bread, put it in zip bags, and freeze.
- Reheating: let frozen bread thaw naturally, then heat in an air fryer at 180°C for 3–4 minutes to bring back that fresh-baked, crisp, warm texture. (A microwave can make the bread soggy, so an air fryer or oven is recommended.)
If I had to pick one favorite, it's definitely the garlic bread. Next time I visit Ikseon-dong, I want to buy garlic bread and a coffee, sit on a bench, and enjoy street-eating it peacefully while listening to music.
Final verdict on Munhwa Bakery
A recommended bakery near Jongno 3-ga, and a great stop on a bread-pilgrimage route. Garlic bread ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, would revisit ⭕️
If you're looking for a can't-miss, great-value bakery in Ikseon-dong or planning a bread-pilgrimage route, I recommend giving Munhwa Bakery a try!
