Mapo burger with mentaiko mayo and butter garlic fries: Bored & Hungry

I visited Bored & Hungry Mapo, a burger spot billed as one of Korea's best burger joints, the trendiest brand in Korea, and the burger Snoop Dogg fell for.

Inside the restaurant and the weekend morning wait

The monkey drawings and murals scattered around the store are apparently the work of Manila- and New York-based illustrator Jappy Agoncillo and painter Lee Mu-woong. No wonder they had such a striking, intense visual presence. We went around 11:30am on a weekend and got seated right away with no wait.

The interior feels like an old American diner. The distinctive graphics, colors, and kitschy props make for a pretty cheerful and upbeat atmosphere.

NFC ordering and what the 38,200-won combo included

Uniquely, you just tap your phone on an NFC tag and it pulls up the menu screen right there. (You can even pay directly through it.)

Among the many burgers, we ordered the Peanut Bacon P.B.B burger and the Shrimp O.G burger, each in a combo with butter garlic fries and french fries. Total: ₩38,200!

Phone stands and nitrile gloves at the self-serve bar

You can grab plates, forks, knives, wet wipes, and drinks freely from the self-serve bar. What impressed me especially was the phone stand for solo diners and the nitrile gloves for eating neatly with your hands — clearly a lot of thought went into what customers might need.

And soon, the burgers arrived..!

Shrimp O.G burger (12,400 won): salty mentaiko mayo umami

The Shrimp O.G burger (₩12,400) has a brioche bun, sriracha sauce, frill lettuce, shrimp patty, red onion, and mentaiko mayo (fermented pollock roe mayo) sauce.

The thick shrimp patty looks seriously delicious.

If Zesty Saloon's shrimp burger is known for its sharp wasabi mayo kick, Bored & Hungry's shrimp burger is packed with the salty umami of mentaiko mayo instead. The shrimp meat was finely minced, but the patty itself was thick enough that you still got a satisfying bite — a genuinely tasty shrimp burger.

Peanut Bacon P.B.B Single (11,900 won): sweet-salty with peanut crunch

The Peanut Bacon P.B.B Single burger (₩11,900) comes with a brioche bun, bacon jam, ketchup, a 130g smash patty, grilled onion, American cheese, bacon, and peanut sauce. It was served set up so the monkey character looks like it's sticking out its tongue, hungry for the burger — kind of cute.

Whoa—✨ It was my first time trying a burger with peanut sauce, and the sweet nuttiness worked in perfect harmony with the saltiness of the patty, bacon, and cheese, bringing out that sweet-salty charm really well. The bits of actual peanut you could feel in the sauce were a nice kick, too.

Butter garlic fries (6,000 won) and french fries (3,000 won)

The butter garlic fries (₩6,000) and french fries (₩3,000). The butter garlic fries lean a bit saltier than my favorite Ttobogetji Tteokbokki's version, which made me think they'd go great as bar food with drinks. The french fries had that perfect combo of fluffy potato and freshly fried crunch — the kind of high-quality fries you don't often find at burger places. 👍

A date course with the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail

The taste and portion of the burgers, the atmosphere inside, and the walkable Gyeongui Line Forest Trail right outside — nothing about this burger restaurant fell short. If you're dating around Sinchon or Hongdae on a nice day, I'd recommend grabbing a tasty burger at Bored & Hungry Mapo and then taking a stroll along the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail.
